Norse mythology is very entertaining but also very tragic.

And the tragedy of Baldr and Frigg breaks my heart.

"The Pillars of the Earth"update:

Alfred: Such a petty person. Imagine marrying a woman who doesn't love youand whom you don't lovejust to stop her from marrying your brother (seriously, his obsession with Jack is something that needs investigating).

William: At a certain point, things were going TOO well for him—too well (come on, he switched sides three times and even set a town on fire); there’s no world where he was guaranteed the earldom; at most, Stephen might have let them collect tithes.

Aliena: Well, her life is a total tragedy, but it cracks me up that she set off on this deadly journey with the baby and the little guy is actually surviving.

Note: I absolutely loved the moment she took the blame for everything (obviously she isn't responsible for anything, but it was a moment I’d been waiting for—I knew it was coming).

Jack: This might be an unpopular opinion, but he should have married Aysha. I love Jack, but I hated him when he told Aliena to kill herself (especially when she was clearly going through the worst moment of her life).

Richard: Well, he’s insufferable, and Ellen is right—I think it’s time he learned to stand on his own two feet. He’s been a knight for years, never betrayed Stephen, and yet he couldn't even manage to get gifted a patch of land to farm?

Stephen: Historically, I’m Team Mathilde, but Stephen is just wonderful. Protect him at all costs.

Ellen: Always so extra; I love her. She could have taken Martha with her, though.

Philipp: I just love him; he hasn't got a clue, but I love him. I adore how he’s now clashing with his own hunger for ambition.

Waleran: He just keeps on plotting. GOOD.

Regan: I haven't seen her on screen in ages. Bring back Lady Regan!

Last but not least: Tom! The argument between Tom and Jack was sublime, and I wish it had had more of an impact on Tom’s psyche. In the end, he died thinking his son Alfred was an angel and that Jack was reproaching him for having been useless ...all for nothing. I really hoped the argument would lead to some kind of growth, but no.

I love Philip, but - oh my God - sometimes he is so stupid. "Richard hates William Hamleigh for selfish reasons - unlike me, who despises him for how he treats people."

As if Richard didn't embody those very people!

Of course, Philip can't know the full extent of what happened between William and Richard, but it doesn't take a genius to put two and two together. William lives in the house that used to be Richard's, he manages (badly) the lands that used to be Richard's, and Richard's family was overthrown by William's - and that’s just the public side of things.

Jesus, Philip really ought to get off his high horse and thank God that Richard and Aliena don't know the true extent of his involvement in their family's downfall. And sure, maybe Richard is a fool, but we can't all be Aliena; sometimes a person has the right to be foolish and not handle their trauma perfectly (obviously, Aliena is my queen).

Still, it takes a lot of nerve to call a guy selfish for being angry at the person who stole his home and his life.

Freya gives Loki a few pointers

It’s an endless cycle: Loki causes trouble, and then Loki fixes the damage.

Loki needs to rescue the beautiful Idunn, who has been abducted by the Jötnar. To do so, he needs a quick lesson from Freya (specifically, her spell or disguise that allows him to turn into a falcon).

I love that, even though Loki is a shapeshifting trickster god, he still needs a refresher course every now and then.

Freya rules!

An Happy Family

Loki shows his wife (Sigyn) and their children (Váli and Narfi) his latest invention: the net.

Everything is fine.

Everyone is happy, and I’m sure nothing will go wrong.

That said, the drawing has bad perspective (bye-bye, Sigyn’s foot) and bad shading, and I colored outside the lines because I’m laaaazy.

Bishop Waleran Bigod vs Prior Philip

Bishop Waleran vs. Prior Philip I watched "The Pillars of the Earth" so many years ago that I don't remember a thing (except that Tom was incredibly hot), so reading the book is practically like reading a story I've never heard before. I really love the contrast between Prior Philip and Bishop Waleran as two opposite poles of religion.

They are two men of "lowly" origins (an Englishman and an Irishman during the Anglo-Norman era) who owe their positions to one another yet are sworn enemies (over something as "material" as the ownership of a stone quarry). It also surprised me how young they are in the books; I think the TV series made Waleran much older to represent the religious "old guard" and Philip young to represent "new blood," but I much prefer them being contemporaries (or at least very close in age) representing corruption and devotion.

I haven't finished the book yet, but I hope there’s a philosophical or moral confrontation between the two at some point.

Prior Philip of Kingsbridge

Young Philip of Gwynedd; I’m reading the book right now, and I was struck by just how young he actually is. Anyway, I think he’s my favorite character (even though he’s on Stephen’s side, which, incidentally, makes Stephen a great character too).

And I love that he’s a devout, good man, but also a skilled politician.

You’ve got my vote, Philip!

Plus, I’m pretty sure that, at some point, three-quarters of the characters were in love with him.

Princess Visenya Targaryen (II) lives

It’s nothing special,just a version of Visenya, Rhaenyra’s daughter, depicted with some reptilian traits. These features didn't exactly help her mother's cause (thanks to unkind gossip), but at least she finally had her Visenya.

Aside from that, it’s just the result of a day spent drawing 19th-century-style ladies-in-waiting with a friend.

The Pillars of the Earth

I’m reading "The Pillars of the Earth"; here are my immediate thoughts:

William: says the worst things, thinks the worst things, does the worst things.

Alfred: is a traumatized kid who suffered hunger and the deaths of his mother and little brother, while his father remarried immediately. He is also clearly neglected by a father who indulges him but doesn't truly pay attention to him (being too obsessed with sex and cathedrals). Consequently, he displays cruel behavior, though he’s not beyond redemption.

Me: Anyway, I hope Alfred dies soon. :^
