I still get very high and very low in life. Daily. But I’ve finally accepted the fact that sensitive is just how I was made, that I don’t have to hide it and I don’t have to fix it. I’m not broken.

Art is a response to what an artist sees, feels, and experiences. It has nothing to do with the kind of paint you use, the camera brand you use, or wether you fire to cone 04 or cone 10, or if you play classical music or rap. What matters is if your intentions are honest, and if it effects at least one other person. It also has nothing to do with how long you have been making, you are an artist. What will matter is the moment after you have created your best piece; it’s the decision to go a head and start on a fresh blank canvas, that defines you.
Me (via ics-inspirationblog)
I don’t want people to see these pieces as art because they are a large part of who I am today, but because of the artist and what she represents. To me she represents strength, pride and the power of hard work. She was a young widow who took her God given talents and moulded a future for many generations. Rebekah in her beautiful traditional wear traveled the world. Enlightening it with beautiful ceramics, who she is and awareness of where she came from. Rebekah to this day still rises at the 5 am at the break of dawn before the sun rises to tend to her field. She then spends her noons resting with a cup of tea under the shade of her favourite mango tree. Then spends the day moulding hand crafted luxury ceramics, with little more then a bucket, some water and some decorating tools.
Xhosa Names & Meanings: The “ABC’s of Xhosa Names” by Thandiwe Tshabalala.
South African Illustrator and incredibly talented young creative Thandiwe Tshabalala recently sent me these awesome gifs highlighting and celebrating beautiful names in her mother tongue of Xhosa.
Here’s what she had to say about her series:
"Way back, when apartheid was taking place in South Africa, parents used to give their kids English names so that white people wouldn’t have to struggle pronouncing African names. Most people born during the times of apartheid were given names like: Knowledge, Margaret, Mavis (which has negative connotations), Innocentia, Innocent, Jeffrey, Gloria…eek..Let me just stop there. However, when black folks got their ‘freedom’ back, they went back to naming their children African/South African names."

Kolam (via Yesterday Was Dramatic, Today is OK)
Kolam is a rangoli traditionally composed of geometric lines and shapes, drawn around a grid pattern of dots. It is drawn by south Indian women with rice or chalk powder in front of their homes.

Perfect example of how we’re primitive & dysfunctional without white interference intervention.
This is beautiful and great for the environment. What more could anyone ask for!! :)

notable south asian americans → Kalpana Chawla
Kalpana Chawla is the 1st Indian American astronaut and 1st Indian woman in space.
Born in Karnal, India, on July 1, 1961, Chawla was the youngest of four children.
Chawla obtained a degree in aeronautical engineering from Punjab Engineering College before immigrating to the United States and becoming a naturalized citizen in the 1980s. She earned a doctorate in aerospace engineering from the University of Colorado in 1988, having previously obtained her masters degree from the University of Texas. She began working at NASA’s Ames Research Center the same year, working on power-lift computational fluid dynamics.
In 1994, Chawla was selected as an astronaut candidate. After a year of training, she became a crew representative for the Astronaut Office EVA/Robotics and Computer Branches, where she worked with Robotic Situational Awareness Displays and tested software for the space shuttles.
Chawla’s first opportunity to fly in space came in November 1997, aboard the space shuttle Columbia on flight STS-87.
In 2000, Chawla was selected for her second voyage into space, serving again as a mission specialist on STS-107 in the Columbia space shuttle. The mission was delayed several times, and finally launched in 2003. Over the course of the 16-day flight, the crew completed more than 80 experiments.
Chawla and the 6 other crew members died on February 1, 2003 while Columbia was attempting to reenter the Earth’s atmosphere.
Over the course of her two missions, Chawla logged 30 days, 14 hours, and 54 minutes in space. After her first launch, she said, “When you look at the stars and the galaxy, you feel that you are not just from any particular piece of land, but from the solar system.”
