In late March, I walk by the water and Spring follows me home. I sense her presence at the back of my heels and I turn, catching her only in small glimpses. A streak of blue in the sky, a soft patch of sunlight behind the trees. She is skittish and wild, like the neighbourhood dog, greeting me only in small moments. In April, I beckon Spring closer. I touch her heart and ask her to stay. We go for long walks and the birds sense she’s near. They come home and sing to us. They circle the sky. We coax Spring from her shadows and she stays out a little longer. On her bad days, she hides. She stays away and curls up in dark until it’s safe to come out again. In May, I bury my face in her fur, the fresh leaves on the trees. The pink flowers in the grass. We stand together in the park. I’ve come to know her well now. I turn away from her for a moment and she runs, spooked by the wind. I call her back and she stops. She turns and looks me in the eye. She sees it, that restless ache inside me. The desire to bloom this time of year with the leaves and the flowers and the grass. Spring walks back to me and kisses me with sunlight.

hardest thing to learn during recovery is….. some of your misery is your own fault. you have to actively choose to stop wallowing in your own pain & start to recover. that means stop being self deprecating, start taking care of yourself, start eating healthy, start taking your hygiene seriously, even if it’s hard. & it is hard! but you must.
