I had some other work to do this morning (Figuring out some algae stuff involving 1000 L mesocosm up a mountain) so mystery species has been sitting alone in the lab all morning…..

Made it up to the lab today to find this. It’s probably from the fridge defrosting and not the creepy “algae”.

June 13th Update.

According to a few colleagues it’s either a plant, an algae, or a fungi. So that’s been helpful.

After a day with some sunlight I think I might be seeing some chloroplasts.

It seems to like the nutrient solution I added yesterday though!

I was about to say “in a sensible lab people wouldn’t waste time with this, they’d autoclave the bottles and move on” but on reflection I can’t think of a single bio lab I’ve been in that wouldn’t immediately go “ooh, mystery algae, that sounds like a fun challenge; let’s devote multiple hours to identifying it for no reason”.

The mystery algae/plant/fungi/alien is stuck in the university growth chamber. With everything going on I probably won’t get to check in on it until September, possibly not until 2021.

no one fucking tells you this so here it is:

when signing out forms to apply for disability / filling out a form for diagnosis

you’re supposed to fill it out as you on your worst days

like, I filled out forms that said I could do most things usually

like, my doctor added in the conditions like “yeah, they can feed themselves when not stressed” “they can do this when not stressed”

but how I should have filled it out was more like

“some days I can’t feed myself” “some days I can’t leave the house”

My doctor didn’t even know this, but I talked to someone who had worked with people with both developmental and intellectual disabilities for a number of years, and she told me to write down how it is for your bad days

this should be a thing they tell you, but it isn’t

part of the reason I didn’t get my autism diagnosis as soon as I should have is because I filled out forms wrong!

This also goes for filling out forms for disabled parking rights. I’ve been rejected multiple times for a pass cause I didn’t find this out till recently.

That throws me too. Because the more help I get, the more capable I get. It’s easy to forget what happens when the help falls away even partially let alone completely.

wait, love ur space knowledge, now i have a moon query. u said earth's moon is proportionally the hugest but isn't charon like half the size of pluto? which i know is technically a dwarf planet but she's very dear to me so what's the deal with that? thank u

yeah Charon really isn't a moon proper because it's not actually orbiting Pluto, they're orbiting each other!

this means that Pluto and Charon are actually a paired system of orbiting bodies and not a standard planet-moon-system at all, and this is a major reason why Pluto was disqualified from being a planet proper in the first place!

this double-orbit is also a major reason why Pluto's orbit around the Sun is just so unbelievably fucked up.

which, again, is another reason why Pluto got kicked off of the Planets table and had to go sit with Planetoids and Dwarf Planets at the kiddy table.

What happened with ranboos discord breaking?

oh anon — allow me to recount some important history. basically back around new years, ranboo did a stream on the smp except at some point his discord glitched out and he thought tubbo had left the call when in reality tubbo was still there. cue the rest of the stream going on with ranboo thinking he was talking by himself with chat, not knowing tubbo could hear everything he was talking about. tubbo and chat basically decided to mess with ranboo, with tubbo talking to chat and chat using ranboo’s donations to talk with tubbo, all the while ranboo being super confused. there are some really sweet moments during it, one with a donation asking for ranboo’s honest opinion of tubbo and ranboo going on to rave about how much he enjoyed hanging out and getting to know him (mind you at this point ranboo hadn’t been on the server longer than two months)

all in all it was a really funny and sweet stream and upon viewing it in hindsight, it really comes off as the point where ranboo and tubbo’s dynamic started to shift into the friendship they have today :] highly recommend giving the vid or clips a watch.
