can i say that the experience of being personally recommended a book by a good friend and told "oh my gosh you're going to love it" and then having to gruelingly drag yourself through the first 50 pages because you have a rule about at least reading the first 50 pages of every book you give a chance... and fucking HATING IT???? mortifying experience. how do i tell my friend that the book she asked me to read, which is her favourite book on the planet, is so unbelievably poorly written and should actually be illegal to recommend.
