FUCKING PREACH
It’s all about control, sexism, racism, it’s not about babies or lives or the Bible
Okay, but I've seen this argument thrown around for years, and I never believed it because it's been pushed into my brain since I was a child by my extremely Christian parents that abortion is fundamentally evil because it goes against the Bible. But I'm taking a 2nd Wave Feminism course and I finally found out that this is actually 100% true? Until the Reagan campaign and associated Republican politicians tried to find another social issue to sway Southerners, especially Southern women, in their favor, abortion was not a primary issue for churches. It was only when feminists started mobilizing and, as a result, many institutions such as the Catholic church tried to mobilize against them that churches started advocating against abortion. Abortion did not become an issue of morality for the right until the 70s. Before then, abortion was simply not discussed because most things relating to sex weren't publicly discussed. So no, according to popular belief, the argument that abortions are killing babies did not always exist, it was just an argument crafted when the Republican party needed another social group to oppress for political points
Of course it was Reagan
Why’s it always Reagan?
And this absolutely did become an issue in response to school desegregation. The “moral majority” right wing coalition was formed by Jerry Falwell, Paul Weyrich & others when segregation academies and even universities like Bob Jones lost tax exempt status. They called it an attack on their religious freedom.
While this was the start of the politically organized religious far right, Weyrich was smart enough to know that they needed another issue to mobilize conservative voters on a larger scale.
In the late 70s, there was a lot of hostility to women’s rights among conservatives, as well as a lot of change. The ERA was being ratified by states, colleges were going coed, and women were even legally allowed to get credit without a man co-signing for the first time. After Roe v Wade, there was a spike in the recorded number of abortions (as anyone would expect because they weren’t recorded when illegal), and this made conservative audiences a prime target for a new political propaganda.
Politicians teamed with (primarily conservative segregationist) pastors all across the country with graphic videos about the sin of abortion, and the epidemic of wicked women killing unborn babies. Never mind that just a few years earlier almost all of these congregations didn’t even consider abortion a sin, just something that those “foreign” Catholics opposed. This was a major campaign, and was purely political. Its purpose was to get Jimmy Carter out of office and replace him with a Republican.
It worked. And we’re still living with the monster they created.
