So instead, the victim deserves a life sentence for having been raped?
The trauma from such an act cannot possibly be forgotten within someone's lifetime. Having an abortion won't negate the pain.
That being said, I still think it should be her choice and she should know having an abortion could be physically straining for her, just as likely as carrying to term but it should be dealt with as soon as possible.
Many women I know who've had to get a hysterectomy is because of the abortions they've had. They have 1 to no kids because of this. I'm very against late term aborts because of this and many other personal reasons.
"Having an abortion won't negate the pain." So a woman should have to carry, birth and raise her rapists child because hey, she was still raped and will still feel that trauma, so why not make her re-live it every day, right? Maybe some women would want to do that. Or feel they couldn't abort for their own reasons. The point is that nobody else should get to make that decision for her.
"Many women I know who've had to get a hysterectomy is because of the abortions they've had." Please cite your sources regarding abortions as a direct clinical cause for hysterectomy. Also, the existence of people who've had negative outcomes from abortion should not affect the rights of other women to make an informed consent to have one.
"I'm very against late term aborts." WHO WAS TALKING ABOUT LATE TERM ABORTS? Just you. Nobody else. And your "many other personal reasons" is a great reason for YOU not to have an abortion. Your personal reasons should have no effect on other women's right to get one.
Hi, Christian raised pro life here
My parents told me, after I asked at like 13 what would they do if that happened to me, that they would have me have the baby and raise it for me. At THIRTEEN. I'm realizing now how absolutely fucked up that was even though I understand their thinking. Not the baby's fault.... But I myself was a child. I didn't understand everything that would happen in that process.
I'm now 34 and still in the prolife social circles but here's the thing ... I now know better. I know more.
First off, abortion was never a real political issue until after Roe v Wade and around that time the satanic panic also surfaced. Child sacrifices and abuse were the thing to throw around in fear mongering and so "save the children" rose as a religious leverage tactic. Before then, it was far less a Republican voting point. Which I often hear now is a deciding factor. "I don't agree with XYZ but they're pro life ..."
(Listen to the podcast Devil in the Deep Blue Sea for more about Christianity and the set up for the panic. It's very interesting)
But not only that: The woman will FOREVER suffer.
If she aborts or keeps the baby it doesn't undo the rape.
If she has the baby and puts it up for adoption, it doesn't undo the rape AND has lifelong lasting effects on her body and mind from carrying and birthing the child.
If she has and keeps the baby, it doesn't undo the rape, she has lifelong physical and mental effects from the birth, AND has to look at someone who reminds her every day of her rapist- regardless of how much she truly does love the child.
I know people who love their child dearly, but seeing them still hurts, and they are constantly terrified "what if they become like them?"
Most abortions happen very early before the baby even LOOKS like a baby. The heartbeat isn't even a heart. Plus most women miscarry naturally in the timeframe people get abortions (previously without political intervention making it near impossible). The baby is not viable. It's seldom even recognizable as a human baby at that point.
Most late term abortions are WANTED children. They have nurseries and names. They are aborted out of NECESSITY not "carelessness" or whatever else you want to call it. People don't go through a pregnancy THAT LONG only to change their minds.
Also did you know states allow for rapists to fight for visitation and custody of their children in some cases? Meaning, incarcerated or not, the rapist could potentially be in the victim and child's life indefinitely. Even if they never touch again, every interaction will hurt the victim for years and potentially put the child at risk as well. Either by becoming a victim or by being raised in such a way that they potentially become an abuser as well.
Abortion is healthcare, even in cases of rape. I'd argue that it is safety and protection in those cases as well.
Birth is not easy, regardless of how the child came to be. And the aftermath of healing and potentially raising the child is lifelong physical, mental, emotional, and financial.
If YOU were raped and want to keep the child in whatever capacity, that's on you. But do NOT continue to victimize and harm the mother through her entire life because of your feeling toward the rapists sperm sticking around. You are not the one who's entire body is changing and hurting even after the assault.
I am pro life when it comes to myself. Everyone else around me though? Their CHOICE. ESPECIALLY when it comes to rape. Someone else's trauma is not mine to decide how they react and respond to the lasting effects. Especially when once that child is born, the people calling for their life no longer care or will even give aid to help said child grow up happy and healthy.
Help the children already born and stop harming victims already going through hell because of your personal religious or moral opinion. Their life is not yours to control. Otherwise you're worse than the rapist in my opinion.
They attacked them potentially once. You guilted them into suffering the rest of their lives.
^^ this person gets it.
And I'd like to re-emphasize their point that abortion didn't use to be the huge wedge issue that it is today. Historically? Nobody cared about abortion (well, they cared, but it was an accepted part of the human condition). The church didn't care. The right didn't care.
It was TURNED INTO a wedge issue by conservatives who were threatened by the increasing power of women and minorities and sought a way to carve out a powerful coalition of white religious people (i.e. their ideal US population).
Left a fragment of my heart at the end of the universe.
