Roguemaker is a science fiction mystery. Something goes wrong on a commercial space flight leaving the passengers and crew drifting in escape pods with shaky communication. It builds into a bigger mystery involving things on a much bigger scale than anyone is prepared to deal with.
Why you should listen in no particular order
While they do not stay in escape pods for more than a couple episodes, that early part was really compelling and completely character driven. We're drifting in space, but these are just people. It is a great way to introduce us to the cast of our little locked room mystery.
The music! In addition to a great theme song, two of the characters are in a band, and they sing. It's fantastic.
Worldbuilding! Great worldbuilding!
I love the element of the Wander. That's a great concept, its history is compelling, and I like how different characters respond to it.
The strained but devoted sibling relationship is a minor element, but I am THERE for it. Alyss and Pilar!!!
Really smooth sound design and sound quality.
We do not know if Ship is sentient/sapient. Some characters think so, some don't. Its ambiguity is compelling to me. That's actually something I saw the creator talking about on twitter a while back, way before I listened, and it was intriguing to me. She really followed through on that concept well.
Give it a listen! It's 10 main episodes with 2 bonuses. A very enjoyable listen!
i started this in september for the zine fest, this still counts! i thought, hmmm i’ve been listening to heaps of various forms of space scifi, what could i possibly do a zine about?
this was my first ever zine! i think i might do a follow-up of honorable mentions that didn’t make it in, i already had to modify the format cuz i had too much to say xD
Sometimes I put on Roguemaker playlists on while I’m cooking and then feel like a character in Roguemaker universe simply listening to these songs on the radio 😌
The only thing I have to say for myself is: Songs in podcasts my beloveds <3

Saddie DeRoso disappeared ten years ago, leaving behind the charred remains of a home. Now, her brother, podcaster Nicholas DeRoso, thinks he's finally found her -- in an infinite suburb beyond material reality. Will he find her? And how far will he go to try?
@roguemaker shreds (ensemble cast Sci Fi mystery), although I'm *in* it so I may be biased!
I'll never get over people not knowing about Video Palace, a docu-horror from one of the writers of The Blair Witch Project and produced by Shudder, too
And if you haven't listened to @badlandscola you're REALLY missing out on some fine vibes-y horror
I am being so serious when I say: if you have the financial and time privilege to get a group of friends together and make an indie project, PLEASE do. Indie games, indie animations, indie comics etc etc
the art industries are kind of in the shitter. It’s not so much because of AI (though that doesn’t help) but because studios just aren’t hiring people and funding projects anymore. People who’ve been in the industry for decades are finding themselves struggling, and once you have a mortgage or kids it’s harder to do something as risky as making something on your own.
completing projects is hard. it takes a lot of time and effort, and most people can’t afford it. so if you CAN afford to make art, even at the risk of no financial gain, I strongly encourage you to be as resilient as you can. We’re at a point where these industries are not going to turn around by themselves, and waiting for jobs to open up again in order to get experience and portfolio work might not be realistic.
people have been making art and telling stories longgggg before we were getting paid for it, and people aren’t going to stop just because no one has hired them to do so.
for everyone else: support indie artists when you can!!!! That person who made that cool indie game or youtube animation or webcomic might be doing this full time! your support might be the only reason they’re able to keep doing it.
and if you have already started an indie project: you’re so brave and I’m very proud of you!!! in fact, drop a link to it in the reblogs if you want! 👇
I helped make (read: co-produced, script-edited, co-directed, voice acted, and did some other miscellaneous jobs for) a science fiction audio drama called ROGUEMAKER with some very cool people!
It's 10 episodes (plus a few bonus eps—one of which I wrote) and it's about a far future commercial spaceflight that goes horribly wrong, leaving the crew and passengers stuck in individual escape pods with faulty comms, an AI that can't hear them, and seemingly random broadcasts going in and out. It was written by my friend @spacecoffeeandcartoons, a soon-to-be doctor of astronomy/literature based on a larp that I helped her run!
We also have an original soundtrack up on bandcamp, which includes vocals from the in-universe band About Gardens (I was actually mostly uninvolved in making the music but it's good music and also a way to kick a few bucks to the folks who actually did make it)
The pilot AI of Plutonic Flight 999 interstellar passenger ship. Helpful and trying its best.
Doing its best.
QWERTY (Trial and Error):
Sentient transcription software who's experimenting making music. I don't have the capacity to submit every AI from this show so beloved QWERTY will suffice.
It's a Bandcamp Friday, so if you've been eyeing up seasons from podcasts like Inn Between, Sidequesting, The Dungeon Economic Model, Old Gods of Appalachia, specials from shows like Welcome to Night Vale, or music from shows like The Tower, The Lost Cat Podcast, or The Strange Case of Starship Iris, now is a great time to grab them, as what you're paying goes far more directly to the creators.
i am Too Tired to write anything in depth, but here is an Actual Song from the fake band About Gardens, a band consisting of a human and an alien from the podcast ROGUEMAKER, who were on their way to Sirius Revel Six (an interplanetary battle of the bands) when their ship blew up
please vote for About Gardens, theyre probably never making it to Sirius Revel Six so this might be their only chance to win anything
Not every podcast piece I've ever made is in my shop, but most of them are! hi! wanderer’s lament was my favorite song (i paused and listened to it again before letting tarsul talk), and i was curious, is it a ǵnonw song or an about gardens original?
It's an ancient ǵnonw folk song! Something Woh́́ has been singing since their childhood, with the accompanying comforting nostalgia despite its haunting storyline. We love it, too--and are very proud that it won an Audio Verse Award last year! https://audioverseawards.net/2022-winners/#Best_Composition_for_a_New_Production
Since the ǵnonw live underground, our composer Emily went with a simple percussive sound for the instrumental portion of the song. Wanderer's Lament is also inspired by a similar moment in the first episode of The Strange Case of Starship Iris, in which characters stuck in space sing an old folk song (Whiskey in the Jar) together.
(Also also, Emma wrote most of the lyrics right after seeing Dune in theatres...that mighta affected some things xD)
