“Look at this,” Kayda said, opening the book, “Neither Love Nor Legacy Alone…Will Succeed”
Karen didn’t understand immediately, but it seemed to click into place for Hellie.
“What if it’s not Lenna?” Hellie asked, “Look it says, And If You’re Neither, Be Warned, Do Not Proceed. What if there’s something there, and it isn’t Lenna’s? What if you’re neither?”
“I wouldn’t know.” Kayda said simply.
“Girls…” Karen hesitated, “If this is magic that you aren’t confident with then we should get someone…”
“I know there’s something here. If it wasn’t, I wouldn’t know, and I know, and so it must be.” Kayda made eye contact with Karen – her expression fleetingly so reminiscent of Lenna that if Karen didn’t know that they shared no blood…
“Trust me,” Kayda whispered, taking Karen’s hand.
“Well I’m impressed.” Lenna’s voice startled them. They had been too busy examining the wooden box that had slowly revealed itself. Kayda had been trying to work out how to open it when Lenna materialised behind her.
“Don’t look so surprised,” Lenna laughed, “Do you think I’d not set a charm to warn me that someone’s found my hidden stuff? Have I taught you nothing?”
“Sorry.” Kayda said, looking slightly guilty.
“Don’t!” Lenna protested, “Technically if you can find it, it’s your stuff. I’m actually glad. I’m impressed that I actually managed to get fairytale-magic to recognise an heir who isn’t related by blood and a mortal partner who isn’t a man.”
