I don’t post here much, but I need to clear my head of a few things. In the wake of several tragedies, some public and some closer to me, I keep hearing, “if you need help, ask for it.” Here’s the thing about that. It’s really fucking difficult to ask for help. I’m not interested in a competition of suffering--depression, addiction, bereavement, a frustrating day at work, whatever--it is difficult to ask for help. 

Check in with your friends and the people you care about. Don’t wait for them to come to you. If it’s been a while, if they just crossed your mind, a simple “hey I was just thinking of you, how are things?” can be crucial to someone struggling. If you think something’s going on, mention it. Ask “how can I help?” instead of “do you need help?”

If they do come to you and/or tell you what’s wrong--well done. You are fortunate, you are lucky. Because that person has decided that you’re a safe person to talk to. That is a gift. 

Receive them without judgment. Let them vent and talk through the situation. Listen. Ask them how they want to handle things. Do not assume they are asking you to solve their problem. 

It’s easy to say “if you need help, ask for it” as a person who doesn’t need help. It puts the onus for seeking care on those that do, though, and that doesn’t help anybody. 

Check in with the people you care about.
