Awesome! Hope you’re happy somewhere, Chicken Nugget!
I have missed this post so much! Let’s all celebrate Chicken Nugget!
do you guys realize that,,,, chicken nugget is one of those butterflies that is perfectly half female and half male?? nugget’s left wing is typical of a female spice bush swallowtail and the right wing is typical of a male
a gender role smashing icon
I wondered why the wings looked different
Incredible
intersex icon
He’s a bilateral gnandromorph!!
WE STAN?????
chicken nugget said intersex rights
This whole post is wonderful, but I think a lot of people don’t realise just how rare bilateral gynandromorphs are. Research has shown that only approximately 1 in 6,000 butterflies is a bilateral gynandromorph! So thanks so much @oddity-txt for sharing this wonderful being with us!

Have a 2 am incoherent analysis on Double Trouble. Feel free to add your thoughts!
Double Trouble Analysis
I’m sad there wasn’t more of them so I’ll make my own answers.
They have a hard time making connections, and that can make them lonely.
Sure, theater and acting are a big thing in their life, but what do they do when they’re not acting? Just looking for another gig?
An audience is great, but an audience isn’t a friend. Who do they talk to? Who supports them? Who can they laugh and chill with?
When they do start to form a connection, they character analyze them, break them down, and leave. They could help the person sort through the flaws and problems they pointed out, but they don’t to avoid being vulnerable.
They can’t be genuinely vulnerable. They can act it, but it becomes a lot harder when it’s about yourself and not a character.
Hopping from gig to gig...is that really what they want? Do they ever stop to think about themselves? Their own inner wants and needs? The easy answer is “money and attention,” but that’s not all they do 24/7.
How often do they act around other people? Are they ever their genuine self? Or do they always lie and manipulate and pretend like they are a friend? Once people realize they’re acting/lying/manipulating, any connection falls apart and they have to move on.
Having your life revolve around acting is lonely.
As someone who grew up as basically a theater kid-adjacent, and who also has some coping mechanisms based on acting, I feel like I can add onto this some and even try to answer some of your questions: (under a readmore because THIS GOT LONG:)
Part of the reason some folks get invested in acting (and even in works of fiction in general) is for the feeling of being someone else. You’re not happy? Well, this character is happy, so you can just put on their mindset, and boom! It’s like you’re fine! You’re lonely? Easy enough to slip on a costume of nonchalance and social confidence, then slide into a group and get lost for a few hours in the feeling of being part of a crowd.
So, basically, it might not just be that acting and theater are a big part of DT’s life, so much as that it is their life. To them, personality and temperament and identity aren’t static so much as fluid; they can only feel truly sad if they let themselves get too attached to one ‘role’, so to speak, and that means it’s time to switch masks if just for a little while.
So, it’d make sense if.. yeah. Looking for their next gig is a big part of Double Trouble’s existence. If life is already a show, why would they not want to spend most of it getting paid for existing the way that most suits them?
This means that they can essentially turn every interaction into breaking people down to be analyzed and studied - similar to what you’re doing here! There’s this sense of being invested and deeply involved while still having another level of distance.
Thus: Yes, on one level Double Trouble can be crying or joking or making friends with sincerity, while also have a sense of separation that allows them to seeing all of these actions as a job or joyfully describe all of a person’s flaws to their face. Because, to them? Everything is a play, an act, a role.
So, if you’re not one person or role, why would you feel the need to take a break and destress? That would mean there’s more to life than just shifting from mask to mask. That there’s someone underneath the masks
(Honestly, this is probably why Double Trouble was eventually able to point out all of Catra’s problems. She was trying to use the same mindset of ‘play the role that works best in each scene’ that Double Trouble does, but kept butting up against one big problem: There’s someone underneath all her masks. She can act all she wants to manipulate people, but if she’s not actually living that role, the real her is going to end up stressed and miserable.)
That means that getting more deeply attached, establishing feelings that exist beyond those identities? That’s actually a major danger to Double Trouble’s entire existence. Feelings that stay behind past a role or their dedication to the stage would mean that all their masks become fake by comparison. And that? Is something to be avoided at all costs, so they don’t become another Catra, or Shadow Weaver, or Hordak.
(It also means they actually failed a little, judging by their honest reaction to Scorpia’s sacrifice. So they’re likely to just intentionally avoid interacting with her as much as possible in the future.)
Which means, you’re right! Vulnerability is a MAJOR issue for them! But not just in terms of their mercenary work - in terms of identity. If Double Trouble lets themselves get complacent enough to consistently stick with one mind set (beyond ‘i do this for money and fun, no attachments, just drama’), it’s more likely that mind set is going to stick.
So, everything they pride themselves on? Their ability to fully understand and mentally take on any point of reference? Would become tarnished and biased.
(Like how, in the DnD episode, everyone’s take on Catra was majorly off in some way. That’s the power of bias on interpreting characters! The only exception to this was Adora, who both: 1) knew Catra best and longest, and 2) didn’t even have her show up while DMing.)
But, with all of this in mind, this means Double Trouble’s biggest asset is also their biggest weakness: They lack a deeper sense of self.
The closest thing they get is having literally everything about themselves centered around transforming, playing roles, theatrical character drama, getting paid for doing it, and loving every moment. It’s like their whole personality is “heeey, watch as I constantly switch identities and personas, it’s pretty great, huh?”
Imagine asking DT about themselves and trying to get any answer not related to the topics I mentioned above. Who they are only exists in relation to their ability to play roles and become someone else.
Honestly? Being just Double Trouble for an extended period of time is probably terrifying to Double Trouble.
So, there’s some angst to pull on if you ever wanted some.
TL; DR - Double Trouble lives their life so happily by seeing everything as a stage and a role - including any deeper sense of self they may have. So, the idea of full emotional attachments is a legitimate existential risk to everything they consider themselves to be. And they mostly see themselves as a conduit for transformations/“theater”. YOU’RE WELCOME FOR THE SADS.

"The Lonely's really got you."
"You know, I think it always did."
This really got me. We all seem to think that if Jon had just figured out/expressed his feelings for Martin prior to the whole, you know, death thing, those two might have had a chance. But what if they never did? Look at Martin. All he's known, really, is rejection and isolation. Rejected by both his parents. Forced to lie in order to get a job at an early age, making it difficult to be open with his peers. I know others have said it, but it's highly possible that Martin chose to crush on Jon because it was safe. Because he knew nothing would come of it. It gave him a convenient place to park all his romantic feelings and fantasies without fear of having it ever develop into a real relationship. That's why Elias couldn't touch his feelings for Jon; he already (thinks he) knows that Jon doesn't care about him. That's part of the point.
I don't know that there was EVER a time when Martin could have accepted reciprocal feelings from Jon.
But maybe there can be? In the future? Martin is more confident in himself and his worth. Maybe when this is all over...

so this is what we’re doing, huh? lonely eyes but sad? lonely eyes but I’m crying instead of having a nice laugh? lonely eyes but instead of gleefully evil funnee old men it’s a slow and reluctant slide into monsterhood for each other’s sake?
Something that gets me about this podcast is how little of the character interaction we actually see. We get these little snippets of relationships on tapes, but the everyday personal moments-Tim making jokes over lunch that Sasha has to laugh at despite herself, John ranting to Martin about a particularly infuriating filing problem, Daisy and Basira stopping to drink a cup of tea in companionable silence after a particularly difficult round of physical therapy–are all lost. It’s brilliant storytelling that lets us understand that people and relationships are changing just out of sight, and we get to see the impacts of it but there’s so much we don’t *know.*
There’s something to be said about the fact that the format is skewed to focus on the horrific things that happen to the characters, the moments when they are afraid, and whatever is controlling the tape recorders is presumably tied to the entities that feed off of fear, but I’m not entirely sure what conclusions to draw from that yet
hi magnus friends it’s me, your girl, coming at you hot with the question: what power would you be an avatar for and why? I would be the buried because I like those statements the best and also, cozy
supplemental: what power would you fall victim to? I would absolutely die by the stranger because I’m a little too trusting of people I don’t know. if I smoked I would have been snatched up in ep 1
martin isnt an avatar or follower of the web because hes not scared of spiders or stasis or entrapment or being manipulated and every follower/avatar that was once human has usually shown at least some fear related to the entity they end up devoted to. in this essay i
Except sometimes the people called to something aren’t afraid of it. Sometimes it’s something they’ve already embraced. Jon isn’t afraid of being watched - he loves knowing things, he absolutely HAS to have answers. It isn’t fear OF the Eye that ties him to it. And he’s far from the only example of this in the show. It seems that while the Powers like to feed on people with their specific phobias, when they choose followers, they often go for people who are ripe for persuasion to their cause. The Desolation selects followers from people who enjoy burning shit, not people terrified of fire. The Eye chooses people who thirst for knowledge, the Lonely’s servants are often willing as well… and the Web has come for people who embraced it before, Neil Lagorio for one.
Basically, fear of a Power is not a prerequisite for serving that power, and in fact the opposite might make a better servant. Just as everyone has things they fear, everyone also has something they don’t fear as much as they ought to. There’s always someone who prefers the dark, who likes being alone, who wants to know everything no matter what it costs. It doesn’t make them immune to those powers - on the contrary, the Powers take notice. They know they can use such people.
Martin would not make a good “meal” for the Web. He would, however, make a fantastic disciple.
(Mind, I respect anyone’s opinion on Web!Martin - just because I love the theory doesn’t mean everyone has to. But on the subject of fear and how it relates to serving the Powers, this is something I’ve already had a lot of thoughts on, so here they are.)
It doesn’t always have to be straight-up fear, insofar as people immediately run the fuck away from it. What I’m saying is that the psychology of followers/avatars before they are fully devoted seem to simultaneously both a compulsion and some level of revulsion towards the entity they eventually follow. I didn’t go into this in detail because I was using a meme format for my post.
Yes, Jon never directly said he was terrified of the Eye. He did, however, change his actions because he felt like he was being watched by something as he recorded statements in season 1, thus why he acted far more skeptical than he was. In season 2, he devolved into all out paranoia because of what he found in the tunnels, and added supplemental notes in secret in case others are listening in. He may not have shown stereotypical fear reactions in regards to the Eye, but he definitely made actions that altogether can quite easily be read as him overreacting in defense over the thought of being watched.
Yes, the Cult of the Lightless Flame seems like another exception towards this rule, but a deeper read into Jude Perry’s statement about how she joined can give another interpretation. Yes, she was all about figuratively burning things since even before she became part of the Cult, but the first part of her statement still shows that she had some level of hesitation before she devoted herself fully to it:
JUDE (STATEMENT)
Well, if you smother a flame, it dies. The only way it grows and flourishes is if you feed it. It’s about making sure you find enough fuel for it, and... not caring where it comes from. If you spend your time hiding and fretting about who you hurt, you’ll sputter, and you’ll die as surely as any candle. Don’t be afraid to burn.
It didn’t take her long to join it, admittedly. But even when she first meets the rest of the cult, she doesn’t fully revel in the sensation of being burnt. She doesn’t describe the pain as exquisite, just that it hurt a lot and it took a very long time for her to be able to use it again. Similarly, she says that she had to calm down from having her hand burnt to a crisp - not exactly the full bliss of someone who is entirely dedicated to The Desolation. When she first killed someone, she felt panicked over it, not trusting in the fire and her god. Even after she kills multiple people and entirely destroys their lives, she isn’t fully a member just yet, as she says herself. Without realizing it, she hesitates in burning all her bridges:
At first I channelled this new energy into my job and my relationship. Gretchen and I had never been happier as I moved from one success to the next. [...]
[...]
I know now they were simply guiding me upon the path to my true epiphany. All this time I was serving my god, but only for my own glory. But with each new gift, each renewal of the fire, I saw how lifeless and hollow it was, how grey and ashen my existence had become.
Yes, it’s not obvious, but there was still a level of keeping her distance and reluctance in what she was doing. She was devoted, but she still had some level of revulsion towards burning herself to a crisp at first. That’s what I’m talking about.
Fear may not be a prerequisite, but it sure is likely to come up to at least a notable degree before they fully cross the line to 100% devoted follower.
Yes, we never see an example of this from Neil Lagorio, but we also only get his story from a secondhand source towards the end of his life. By the way he described himself as ‘a puppeteer at heart’ and worked with the statement-giver to create a rig that rather literally turned him into a puppet once he retired, he was likely already fully devoted to the web by the time we crossed paths with him in the story. As such, he’s already thrown away any sort of fear or revulsion towards the concept- of course he isn’t going to get repulsed or hesitant or scard at that point.
So, yes, simplifying it to say that “martin can’t be a follower of the web because he’s not scared of things related to it” was me removing the nuance of what I meant to a rather egregious degree, I can admit that. But I still can’t help but stand by my thought process.
(Thank you very much for the response, by the way! It was plenty respectful and I always love discussing these sort of topics, whether I and the other person agree or not. If you have more examples you want to talk over, I’d be more than willing to keep this reply train going!)
