With the beginning of a new year comes the hopes and dreams that THIS year will be better than the last. Or at least, more fulfilling and rewarding than 2017. One hot trend all over social media in the past week has been to ditch the resolution roller coaster and embrace “your word” for 2018. A word that will define, inspire, and even provide motivation to reach new goals. It’s been cool to see the words that people come up with. “Fearless” “Consistent” “Purpose” “Growth” “Legacy” All great words to strive to live by over the next 365 days. I too have a word: “discipline”. This word means something different to me than anybody else who has chosen the same word. It’s a foundational word that I can build the rest of my life on. It’s a trait I’ve lacked for some time. It is something I must embrace to enjoy life to the fullest. It’s my reason for everything I will accomplish in 2018. Yet, the one word that no one has mentioned strikes fear into the hearts of men and women. A word that makes one cringe when it’s associated with their character. The word is so disgusting that report cards now a days try not to hand it out to students. That word? “Fail”. Guess what? You will be associated with this word in 2018. And it’s not a word to run from either. You see, that’s how we grow as humans. All of the above mentioned words need “Fail”. It’s the yardstick you will use to actually measure if “your word” is making a difference this year. You will be scared before making a big decision. You won’t always be consistent. You will question your purpose. You might become stagnant. You will do something that is not legacy worthy. And I most certainly will not get up at 4:30 am one morning in 2018. And that’s ok. Give yourself permission to “Fail” in 2018. It is better to embrace a short-term mess up with “your word” than to quit. Diets, exercise, goals, everything that we associate with the new year that we say we’re going to change, will run into some sort of “Fail” at one point. How you respond will say more about how impactful “your word” really is. As soon as the opportunity presents itself, get back on the proverbial horse and move forward. (at South Hill, Washington)
