Michaelâs mother would've stood by the window with her arms crossed. The weather reminded her of the home she left behind in England. âWe needed the rainâ she'd say. It didn't matter if it had been raining all week.
The feeling of water and some other liquid (he hoped it wasn't blood) squelched in his shoes with every step he took. Michael tried to focus on it rather than the agony laced in his bones. It didn't work.
He didn't even know where he was going. He had nowhere to go. He couldn't pay for his apartment anymore, and he didn't want to go back to the home his father had left him. Not with the nightmares stalking the hallways and the memories staining the carpet.
Just trying to take his mind off things, he'd tell himself. He didn't know if the feeling of emptiness he felt came from his family all dying, or from the gaping hole left in his abdomen. He supposed it was an unhealthy mix of the two.

He remembered knocking on the door after a particularly bad fight with his father with his siblings in tow, wintertime nights spent with hot cocoa in hand and the laughter of his sister, brother, and Charlotte playing in the snow.
Charlie. Now that was a name he hadn't heard in a while. Last time he saw her was back whenever Michael got into this entire mess. He could only hope she was doing well. Or as well as you can do when your uncle kills you in cold blood and you end up possessing an animatronic before you can even finish second grade.
He heard himself knock before he could process it. His skin tight and leather like around his knuckles. Michel couldn't really think. His brain was cloudy, how long had he even been walking for?
Dots flared in his vision as he struggled to keep himself upright, until a familiar voice, a warm one, opened the door.
