The evening had a cold winter breeze, and a gentle knock was heard on the door of the Itoshiās. There you stood with your parentsāyour mother holding her signature casserole, and your father carrying a pack of canned beer. It didnāt feel right for you to just come around empty-handed, so you brought a little gift that you bought during your 7āmonth long study abroad. Wasnāt that so convenient to buy extra things!
Mrs. Itoshi opens the door with a wholehearted smileāboth sides exchange greetings and she eventually invites you all in. Mr. Itoshi was preparing dinner in the kitchen, and well Rin... Where even is Rin?
"Sae is out to an event, and Rin is in his room. Wait a momentā" she smiles warmly before calling out to the younger boy. He soon comes out of his room with that same stone-cold look as his brother. Talk about genetics!
His gaze landed on you. For a moment, he frozeānoāhis gaze lingered on you for seconds longer before he moved to the kitchen. "Make yourselves comfortable around here! Itās been a while since we had dinner together." the adults were mostly chattering amongst themselves, your parents then volunteered to help in the kitchen which Mrs. Itoshi was reluctant about but gave in either way.
You made your way around the house, getting all familiar with it once more. You often came around here to play with the boys, but eventually just stopped after they started focusing on their sport. Not that you mind. A certain picture frame caught your eye. You took it into your hands, and a bittersweet smile curled on the sides of your lips.
A voice echoed through the end of the hall, āMom didnāt want me to throw it awayā
Caught off guardāyou jumped a bitāonly to see the stoic face of the younger Itoshi. āThrow it away? Whyād you want to throw it away?ā you deadpanned. āHe's thereā he points at the picture. He...? Ohhhhh he.
You never figured out what the issue between the two were, itās not like it was your problem anyway. You put the picture back on the side table, and looked at the boy. You realized he was more lean and... āWhen the hell did you get THAT tall?ā you questioned a bit too loud and a liiiiittle bit annoyed.
You squinted at him and couldāve sworn he was like what six apples tall or something?? Whatever that was. He looked at you as if you had grown another head.
āAs soon as I aged?ā he answered with a tinge bit of confusion. āOh look at you talking about ageing! Howā???ā you trailed off when he was getting closer and holy fuck was he absolutely just towering over you.
āYou sound stupidā
āYou look stupid!ā you blurted out almost immediately. Could things just get any worse?!
He looked perplexed before he retorted back, āyour stupidity is infectiousā
There was a moment of silence. You could hear the TV in the living room playing with both of your parents chattering in the background.
āI am confidently smart, thank you! At least smarter than you..ā You snickered.
He turned his back and scoffed. His steps were deliberate and composed as he headed to his room. For some reason, you felt like following him.
āWhat are you doing?ā he takes a quick glance at you. āSeeing what youāre up to?ā he merely clicks his tongue at your response.
You both got to his room and, huh. It looks... āDo you just like... not believe in rainbows and butterflies? You seem like Gargamel, and it makes me queasy...ā you shivered at the thought. He turns his head slowly to you with an irked out vein on his forehead.
You put your hands in the air, āOkay, okay! I'm kidding!ā You looked a little more around before you saw this deformed looking doll on his desk. Wait...
āYou still have this old thing?ā you picked the doll up, and almost instantly, Rinās ears flushed a vibrant pink. āIā... I just found it recently and planned to throw it outā āYouāre totally lying! It looks too clean to be just found!ā
You started a little crocheting hobby back when you were like 10. You were ass as hell, but you wanted to do a little something so you crocheted a little doll for Rin and Sae. Some sentimental stuff, right?
āWhat else do you still have lying around?ā you started looking at the shelves and whatnot. Most picture frames were goneāthe ones with him and his brother. Hmm...
āYouāre being invasive.ā he crosses his arms with a slight glare. āItās just been a while since I've been around, ākay? I won't pry too much, promise!ā a stupid shit-eating grin was plastered on your face. Sure, you werenāt in good terms with the older Itoshi, but you had no grudge against the younger one. In fact, his company felt more comforting and it didnāt feel like walking on eggshells every time.
On one of the shelves, you spotted a red box. You glanced at Rin, who stood there like he had nothing else to do.
āCan I?ā
His first mistake was shrugging it off without a single care.
His second mistake was letting you open the box.
His third mistake was letting you read the letters.
The letters were dated back only a few years before. Each letter was heavy, something you couldn't imagine the current boy to show. He noticed your change in demeanour, āwhat?ā
You stumbled upon a certain letter that was supposedly addressed to you. Without another thought, you open the letter. Something about the letter made Rin snap out of his thoughts, and realization dawned on him. āWait, (name)āā āyou kept this from me?ā
It was a simple confession. No. It wasnāt just a mere confession. It was everything he adored about you. From every memory, to your very antics, down to your habits. It was puppy love from the young Rin.
You couldnāt help but laugh, not in a mocking way but more heartfelt. He was embarrassed. Hella embarrassed. He didn't dare face you. He couldnāt bring himself to.
āWas this how you truly felt about me before?ā Stupid question, really, but you just couldn't believe it yourself. āNot just beforeā his voice trailed off after every syllable, āuntil nowā he muttered out. That alone made you freeze, your baffled expression fell into bewilderment.
The two of you filled the room with silence. Unsure how to break itāyou spoke, āthatās heartwarming to know, Rin. Thank you for being honestā His head whipped towards you. He looked... suspicious of you.
āWhy are you thanking me?ā he questions, clearly not used to this soft assurance of whatever this was.
āI just felt like it was the most appropriate thing to say. Feels assuring that Iām actually worth likingāā āLoveā the word instinctively came out of his lips, like it was sculpted into his tongue.
Your lips quivered. It felt wrong to be vulnerable to him. You knew you still werenāt in the right state for all of this, but he just hit you at the most vulnerable spot. You bite your bottom lip, forcing a small smile. āI wish we had this approach differently, but maybe I wouldn't have it any other wayā
His breath hitched, with his hands balled at his sides. āI wanted to tell you... sometime soonā he darted his eyes elsewhere. āMaybe when things arenāt as complicated as they are nowā
āYou've matured. Your understanding is amazing, and... I think thereād be a way to start this differently" you stated. His eyebrow quipped up as he questioned, "what do you mean?"
āClear the edges first? Make up for all the lost times? I missed hanging out with the little kid who used to nibble on every object he sees. Itās been a while since we hung outā you let out a small, but heartful laugh.
You definitely were after the wrong brother before. Being wronged by him took a toll. So maybe a little reset? Feels weird, but it feels right.
āYou mean that?ā he asked with a hushed tone, almost like he was testing the waters. His hands rested open on his sides. āI really doā you assured him.
Almost on cue, your parents called you both to dinner. You walked side by side as you teased him relentlessly but never pressured.
Dinner was nice. The adults kept bringing up embarrassing memories from the pastāyou could only laugh stiffly. Rin on the other hand...oh Rin, was not taking it well. He looked like a fuse ready to implode any time. His jaw was tight, and you swear you could feel heat radiating off of his forehead. It nearly made you burst out laughing. You nudged his shoulder softly with your knuckles, reminding him it wasnāt so bad and he should let loose a bit.
You both went back to his room. There wasnāt much to say, maybe a few memories here and there. Reminiscing about the carefree times. It felt oddly comforting, knowing that things only got harder ever since. You laid on his bed with a photo album in hand. Rin sat on the edge of the bed, he wasnāt as uptight as a while ago. You were flipping through the pages, laughing every now and then. His gaze was glued to you, soft and endearing, not his usual precise andĀ sharp stare.
Your parents had gone home first, excusing that they had plans for tomorrow. You wonder what those plans were, but shrugged it off. Both of you basked in the warmth of the room, in contrast to the cold winter snow outside. It wasnāt long until you two opened up. Mainly about Sae. You understood his side, as he did with yours too. You assured him that his brother didnāt disregard and view everything that way. As if you knew better. It got personal, so the topic stopped.
Eventually, it got late. You sat up, telling Rin that you had to go back home. āIāll walk you homeā You look at him surprised, āYou donāt have toāā āI insistā
You could only reluctantly agree. He seemed to be really willing and insistent. You both went down, his parents were in the living room.
"Thank you for having me, Mr. and Mrs. Itoshi. Itās getting pretty late now, Iāll get going." you bowed in thanks. Mrs. Itoshi spoke up with her caring tone, "Youāre always welcome, dear! Are you sure you wonāt stay for a little while? Iāve called Sae and he said heād be here anytime now"
It sent alarm bells to your head. He said he wouldnāt be here the entire night, didnāt he? You shook the thoughts out of your head. āThey could meet some other time. (Name) is already tired, Iāll be walking them homeā Rin responded with indifference. His parents shared a glance, but didnāt push. They nodded and waved goodbye as you both left.
The streets were empty and quiet. Snow was falling slowly, it felt melancholic. āYāknow, I didnāt think weād end the day like this.ā The snow crunched as you walked down the lane. Rin looked at you, as if he didnāt get what you just said. ānevermind that, I was babbling" You laughed it off. He squinted suspiciously at you, not buying a word you said just now.
A car slowed down beside you. A bit spooked outāRin pulled you behind him, his eyes glistened with caution. The tinted windows rolled down and... Fuck.
āWhere are you guys headed to? Itās getting lateā Sae spoke with clear superiority. āWalking (name) homeā the younger brother responded with a slight edge in his tone.
Saeās face contortedāit didnāt seem rude or anything of the sortsāalthough it was off-putting. āI can drive them homeā āItās barely a block away, itās not necessaryā You could only look at the bantering two. Come on, how was a normal person even able to think in this situation?!
āGo home, Rinā there. Itās that cold tone of authority again. Like he didnāt care about anything else. Thatās what made Rin misunderstand.
āI willā he grabbed you by the wrist, it was a bit tight at first but slowly loosened. He started walking away with you.
This left the older brother frowning. You turned your headāhe had actually gotten out of the car. ā(Name)ā ah shit.
Rin didnāt stopāyou were stuck between responding or ignoring him completely. But it seemed like Sae wouldnāt stop either. āRin, can I just talk to him for a moment?ā every word made his brows furrow further.
He stopped in his tracks, turned to youāa conflicted look on his face. āTalk to himāabout what?ā you donāt even know why Sae wants to talk to you. āI... I donāt know.ā āThen whatās the use?ā Closure? Peace? To let go of everything Iāve been questioning?
āPlease, just a moment. Iāll come back to you after I promise.ā those words left your mouth, it felt weird. Felt wrong. Felt too foreign.
You pulled away from his loose grasp and walked towards Sae. āAsk your question. I donāt have all dayā your voice cracked slightly. Talk about vulnerability or whatever.
āBe honest with me. Are you mad at me?ā the same question this afternoon. Is he stupid?!
āFine. You want honest? Iāll tell you honest!ā Anger seeped in your voice like venom. It hurts. āYes, I am mad! Iām upset and Iām angry with how you treat things like itās barely anything youād care about. How I was thereāyet all of a suddenāIām discarded. Itās bullshit, Sae!ā your voice croaked in the winter night. He wanted to reach for you, but you pushed away. āSure, I had no rightābut you didnāt need to be a bitch about it! Iāā Your breath spiked heavily in your chest. His hands were in his pockets, face unreadable. Your eyes started becoming unfocused. You could only hold your breath as tightly as you could.
You saw Rin on the sideāhe looked reluctant to come over. āI just want to start new without having to pester about this, Sae. Please. Just time without having to remember.ā You nearly broke down, but Rin stepped in. āI think thatās clear enough for you to step outā
You could hear Sae click his tongue. He had so much to say, yet no time to express. He was full of guilt, yet he didnāt understand how big of a deal this actually was for you. The two Itoshiās never got to resolve their problem. All you know is that you got home sobbing on Rinās shoulder. A blabbering mess.
Sometimes, things just end the way they are. A reason for a resolution. Maybe things end the way they are because thereās more to it. Perpetuus.

Rudo came around at least once a week when Team Akuta wasn't that busy. After the last time you made him turn the oven onāmaybe nevermind.Ā He'd often sit around the small bakery listening to you ramble about customers, new recipes and even complain about the rowdy people arguing outside. Well, of course, you couldn't keep him around without handing him a few snacks here and there. You know, as a thank you for his company.
Today was one of those days where he drops by. You always wondered so much about this boy. His large gloves, his unique features that seemed like nothing around here. You never pushedāthinking he never shared anyways.
The door chimes open, and the familiar boy walks in with more comfort (unlike his first time in). It wasn't really a good timing in all honesty. Your apron was covered in flour, powdered sugar and some batter.
"Rudo! Hi!" you greeted with comfortable warmth. He waved sheepishly and muttered out a small "hey".
You mixed the batter in the bowl with impatience, "'m really sorry you came around to this mess. There's just this one large order that I gotta finish by today and it infuriates me so much becausewhyorderonthelastminuteyetneeditnotmorethanthreedayslater!!!"
The poor boy could only stare at you dumbfoundedly. It wasn't like he never saw you complain about abrupt customers during his visitsābut seeing you so disheveled? Yeah, it's amusing at the same time he feels a tad bit bad.
"Could I maybe help...?" he asks knowing he nearly exploded the oven before. You look at him once, then at the bowl, and then at him again. "Apron is hung on the door" he immediately straightens up and goes on to grab the apron.
"What'd they even order anyway?" he asks while mixing the batter, "this guy ordered fifty-five cupcakes, a three-tiered cake, sixty cookies with two different flavorsāone being a plain cookie with powdered sugar, the other having strawberry jam in the middle with a cut out heartāhe also asked for thirty cream filled biscuits! Mind youāhe put the order yesterday and needs this by tomorrow! It's outrageouā" you look at him, realizing you might've rambled a bit too much. Sure, he was kind of overheating, but that's okay! He doesn't like seeing you bottling up your feelings, so this was one way... he thinks...! Come on, at least he's thinking.
"Sorry... did I say too much?" you bit your lip sheepishly. "It's alright." He pulls the spatula out of the batter, "People can be shitty sometimes" he added. A relieved smile crept up on your lips. Meeting him was nice. It gave a change from your usual routine. Now, you get to wait for this boy to come around.
"The batter is done, what else should I do?" he puts the bowl on the counterādusting his hands on his apron. You immediately snapped out of your thoughts. You responded, "oh! The plain cookies are done, could you maybe dust them with powdered sugar?"
You grab the sifter and the sugar, handing it to him. He holds both materials while standing still, seemingly like a lost kid who didn't know what to do. You look at him once before exploding into laughterā "I'm sorrāforgot you weren't used to this!" You continued to laugh as you took the sifter and sugar from his hands.
"Come here" you signalled him to look at what you were doing.
"You slowly pour the sugar on the sifter, and then shake the sifter lightly. Don't stay on one cookie, because then it'll uh... y'knowābe too much" he stares intently at the batch of cookies.
"Got it" he nods happily, as you hand him both tools. There were exactly three trays that needed sugar. Not that much, right?
As he did his task, you put the batters in the oven as well. This time you did the oven workānot him.
After a while, he called out again, "(name), I'm done" he sounded really proudāalmost prideful. You were icing up the cupcakes, before you put the piping bag down to look at his work. You went over to him and wow. "Not bad for a first timer!" You cheered. He wanted to ask what else he could do but the cupcakes caught his eye. You followed his gaze to see him staring at the cupcakes.
"Do you want to help me put the icing on top?" you asked. You could've sworn his eyes lit up for a split second. "Okay, but before I let you do it yourself. You gotta learn it first... So we make sure nothing... explodes again" you both shivered at the thought of the kitchen splattered with icing.
You hand him a piping bagāhe seemed careful with it. Unsure with how tight he should hold the bagāyou place your hands over his, slowly guiding his right hand on the top of the piping bag. "You shouldn't grip too tight here" you carefully guide his left hand on the bottom part, "your left hand should be here near the tip to guide the icing" you failed to see how his ears were tinged with pink, as his brows furrowed trying to remain composed.
"U-uh... Yeahānext?" he tried to start squeezing bagā "Wait! Not yet. Don't squeeze with the piping bag held upright, you should angle it a liiiiiiiittle bit" you adjust his hands. "There!"
You slowly squeezed his hands as you guided him on a cupcake. The swirl wasn't perfect, but it's a start!
"Okay, your turn!" it took him at least ten tries before he finally got a decent looking swirl. His face was full of dismay, but you encouraged him to keep trying!
Hours went by and you both finally finished at least 90 percent of the order.
"We should wrap up for today" you slump down. Rudo looked really tired but to him it wasn't so bad. He was able to spend more time with you.
"Say, Rudo, wanna grab some pastries? It's compensation for letting you work in the kitchen with me. I meanāeven if you didn'tāI would've still given you free pastries and whatnot" he was ecstatic, "how many could I get?" You couldn't help but laugh. "As much as you'd like! Just don't finish the entire bakery..." you sweat.
He wastes no time and grabs a little basket, filling it up with a variety of sweets. He comes back to the kitchen, his face already stuffed with cookies and biscuits. "You really have an awful sweet tooth, don't you. Not that I mind. You deserve 'em. Especially cause you didn't explode anything today" you tease. He went absolutely red. Steam was passing through his ears because of embarrassment.
You were never going to let him live that one down, were you?

It was a vacant day for the Team Akutaāa 3 day break after the days of incessant work. Well, maaaaaybe not quite for dear Rudo. Enjin had set him on a quick trip to Hole Town to buy ink for Remlin's next project. Rudo did agree, although he did grumble as to why he had to go out of everyone else. Enjin only gave him that shit-eating grin that yells out 'you can handle it'. That guy is sometimes a handful he swore, but it's whatever.
He steps foot into the town known for kidnappers. But pshh Rudo? Getting kidnapped? Hell nah. Y'all saw what he did with that one guy who tried to kidnap them? Saw the pearly gates that led to the Watchman itself. Wellāonly because Rudo couldn't get any more sweets. But that's aside from the main point! He's gotten a bit of a better grasp on his appetite for sweetsāor at least that's what he wanted to believe.
There was this scent that stuck in the air. Something familiar, yet more...welcoming. He told himself it'd be just a quick peek. Just a little check-out to see what's good. Alas, the moment he started walking to the placeāhe was immediately knocked from his senses, his body deliberately dragged him to where the scent was.
Sweets. Pastries. And sweets.
He mushed his face against the glass of the bakery, clearly enamored by the amount of varying goods inside.
He was too engrossed with the sweets in front of himājust a glass beyond reach, unbeknownst to him, a baker came out of what seemed to be the kitchen.
From inside the bakery, you froze holding a bowl of batter.
You were at a loss for words. In fact, you were dumbfounded. How were you even supposed to feel in this situation? A newcomer is completely smudging the pristinely cleaned windows! You put the bowl on the counter and stepped out of the bakery.
"Hey!" you snapped, hands already on your hips as you were getting ready to scold the boy. You look at his hands and notice large gloves covering them.
The boy whips his head towards you, like he just snapped out of a trance. He raises his brow, clearly confused on whatever business you had.
"You're smudging the glass, y'know!" you huffed out, arms crossing on your chest. Now this timeāhe was dumbfounded. Looking at you, the window, you, the window, your apronāsuddenly, the realization dawned in.
He was caught red-handed peering hungrily at pastries! Embarrassing...
He stumbled over his words, "Whaāuhā" "If you've got nothing to buy then shoo! You'll scare customers away" oh he turns beet root red. The embarrassment creeps up even higher than before!
"Iāof course I'm buying something!" he blurts out. Your expression immediately changes from displeased to ecstatic, "Really?! Then come! Come in!"
You stepped behind him and pushed him into the shop, "why dilly dally outside when you can get a better look at these deliciously baked pastries up close!"
The moment he steps into the shop, he's immediately swarmed with that welcoming aroma he scented minutes ago. It's so near!
You go back to your baking business while also helping him pick out some pastries. "This one is our best seller! The strawberry tart!" you grin proudly at your work.
"Would you like to try it out first?" you asked. He was as stiff as a rock, unable to move nor say a thing. Could it be sugar overload? What a funny guy, you thought.
With that offerāhe couldn't even refuse! He nodded with full delight. You couldn't even help but laugh at his... Oddness?
You grabbed a tart and handed it to him. His ruby-colored eyes were glistening, brightly twinkling with anticipation. This boy wasted no time in gobbling the entire tart, which surprised you a lot. Was he starved?? You felt bad and almost offered more pastries. But wait! This is your bakery! Business is business!
You shook your head, looking at the white-haired boy as he continued to look around. He was clearly basking in his surroundings.
"Say, odd guy, what's your name?" you raised a brow. He looks back at you, seemingly interested. "Rudo"
"Welcome to the shop, Rudo. You seem... Really hungry" you pointed out. He immediately got defensive, stammering stuff that he was just brought in by the aroma. Totally.
You squint your eyes at him, observing his every being. "Liar. You've got a sweet tooth don't you" you huffed. "S..sweet tooth?" he tilts his head.
"Yeah. Like you've got a knack for sweets. I can totally tell so there's no use lying!" you beamed proudly. "Is that how your vital instrument works?" he asks almost immediately.
"Huh?" you blanked.
"is it your.. vital instrument..?" he repeats, a tinge of awkwardness in his tone.
"Oh! Don't get me wrong. I'm a normal baker in this town! Sensing a sweet tooth person is a personal ability of mine!" you gave a cheeky grin. He simply nods, and continues looking over at the pastries.
"I suppose you're a giver yourself?" you ask him this time, and he nods in response. He gazes quickly at his gloves before getting distracted immediately after.
So his gloves are his dearest item, huh. You hummed simply.
"Feel free to look around. I'll be back shortly" you say, as you head back to the kitchen to finish up the next batch.
In a shop full of goods, he surely did feel like he was in cloud nine. He stood there, completely unaware of what he should do. He checks the money given to him, and with quick maths. He estimated that he'd have enough for one pastry. But the question is... which pastry should he get?
A few minutes later, you head back out of the kitchen. "Soooooo, what'd you wanna get?" you tilt your head, anticipating his answer.
"I don't know which one to get" he says. "Eh?" you stopped blinking midwayābefore completely shaking it off.
"Wellālet's start with your budget.." you both calculate it, and the options narrow. You could see how his soul was dulling after every passing moment.
Then an idea popped up in your head. "Hm... let's make a deal! You get 10 free pastries in exchange for you helping me bake! What do you say?" You chirp. He was taken aback, not quite sure how to respond. You are still as good as a stranger, but you don't seem to be anywhere close to being evil... Right?
He thought about it. Calculations in his head (there were no calculations at all, just the amount of free sweets he'd get out of this). "Let's do this!" he confidently beams.
Baking was no profession of his. In fact, he has no clue how to bake at all! Let's just hope he doesn't explode the oven..

Enjin slumps over the couch. "I told you we should've sent someone with him" Zanka says utterly unamused. Enjin seriously just heaved the loudest sigh ever... his fault for entrusting the sweet tooth with a solo adventure.

The orange afternoon light cascades through the windows in the class, it sure was chaotic without the teacher present. Heard it was some last-minute meeting, but who honestly cares.
You weren't particularly loud in the class,Ā unlike a certain blonde-headed, macaron lover who was pestering you incessantly in front.
"Hey, (name)! (Nameee)... You can't ignore me forever, yknow!" He plasters a mock pout on his lips.
The one and only, Charles Chevalier, your best friend since what? Middle school? A prodigy kid, the heart of PxG, and whatever more titles he had to his name.
"You're always so absorbed in that drawing book of yours! As if they're any better looking than I am, right? Right." He looks out the window with that same pout.
You finally glance at the boy who was sitting backwards on his chair, "Are you saying my works are bad?"
He looks back, completely wide eyed. "Huh? I never said that!" "Uh huh sure you didn't", you deadpanned.
"I promise! I was just saying that you're too locked in those artworks of yours, and it gets lonely here, yknow!!" he retorts, "Charles, everyone around you is literally asking to talk to you. I mean, probably not now but most."
"More reasons why you talk to me! If people talk to me, why not you?" He grins. That stupid shit-eating grin.
"I talk to you all the time though?" you finally put the pen down. "Not as much as I want you to though."
He leans his chair against your table. His arm around it as he rests his cheek on the palm of his other hand. That sure did give you an idea.
"Stay like that," you said bluntly. You could almost immediately see the question marks floating around his head, "huh?"
You couldn't help but laugh at the boy, "I said stay like that, silly. If you really want to talk to me while I want to do my stuff. Might as well just merge the two together. Although, I don't understand how we couldn't justā" "OKAY!!!" he yells a little bit too loud, earning a few stares at your fellow classmates. Embarrassing!
He started talking about anything and almost everything. You gave him simple acknowledging hums and nods while you continued drawing him in your book.
"Hey, you know, Loki said we're going to Japan to attend some Neo Egoist League around January or Feb." He announces toāit made you stop midway in your sketching. This time it was your turn toā "huh?"
"Yeah! I don't really want to go cause then I won't be able to see you! But Loki forced me saying stuff like I needed to learn and whatever." He slumps and huffs at the mention of learning.
Well, true. It was both disappointing, yet it still made you proud of your friend.
"It's a great opportunity," you say as you continue your work. "Pshhhh, seriouslyyyyy? Just that? Not even an 'I'll miss you when you're gone'? Not ANYTHING else?" he rests further on his palm with that signature pout he puts on when he wants something.
A soft smile etched on your lips, but of course you wouldn't show him that. As if he wasn't able to tell by the subtle squint in your eyes. He smiled too. This time it was cheeky. His snaggle tooth peeking out to show.
"Hey, Charles!" a classmate yells out from across the room. He breaks off from his pose as he darts his head to the person. "What's up?" His signature smile beaming across his face.
"They're lighting up the Christmas tree tonight at the Town Square. Wanna join us?" the teen asks with his friends right beside him.
Charles thinks about it, giving it a genuine thought. "Ah, I'm kinda busy tonight. Y'know big family preparations for Christmas day!" there were sounds of disappointment, though they still acknowledged and understood.
"Are your older siblings coming back for the holidays?" you questioned. Holding the pen carefully as you trace the lines along your paper. "Yeah! Maybe your family could even come over and join us?" you look up at him, "nah, there's no need. There's so much of you guys already andā" "you talk like you haven't been doing that since we were like 12 or something!" He folds his arms.
"Okay, yeah, so?" you roll your eyes playfully. "So join us again this year, duh!" there really was no escaping this guy. You let out a defeated sigh, "Alright"
"Yeahh!" he says enthusiastically.
Your hand glides over the page. The pen swerving at the lengthy curves and whatnot. Drawing has always been therapeutic for you. It makes you feel at ease (well only when you aren't stressing out with how uneven the details are). It gives you solitary peace upon yourself, especially when your social battery hits negative. There's always an exception for Charles though. After a while, you finally finish your little sketch.
"Charles" you called out softly. He immediately looks towards you with an expectant look, "Yeah?"
"I'm doneā" "Lemme see!"
He stands from his chair and hovers over your table. "That's amazing!"
"You're looking at it inverted, stupid" he lets out a scoff at your remark, grabbing the book himself and actually taking a good look at it.
His features were gentle, soft. Each stroke was defining yet brought light touches to his image. He looked cute.
He always is.
His grin was pervasive across his face, looking like a giddy orange cat.
The bell rang. Guess that was it for today's class. Thank goodness for that last-minute teacher's meeting.
You both kept your stuff. Thinking he had soccer practice today, you went on ahead. Walking by the halls, it seemed that everyone was busy chatting with their friends. Talking about tonight, holiday plans, and hang outs. It felt nice to experience this. Occasions are short-lived. Might as well relish in this moment with more Christmas spirit.Ā
You stepped out of the school doors. The winter air was chilling, yet the sun harbored a bit of picturesque scenery ahead of you as the horizon started to set. You brought your scarf a bit higher to bask yourself in the warmth. You took light steps towards the school gates. Just as you stepped near the gate you heard a familiar voice yelling out for you.
"(Name)!!" you turned around to see no other individual but Charles charging towards you. He jumps and lands right into you. "Charlesā!" "Where'd you think you were going without me!"
"I just thought you had practice andā" "Save it! I bet you have other friends waiting for you outside of these gates." He feigned hurt and put a hand your chest.
"Talk about Christmas betrayal!" "Why don't we talk about dramatic" you simply rolled your eyes at him. "See! You hate meā!" you crouched and balled a bunch of snow together before throwing it at him.
He was taken aback before realization dawned. A devious grin formed on his lips, his snaggle tooth poking out. "Oh you're on!" He picked up a ton lot of snow and started forming them. "Hell no!"
Your plan to shut him up totally backfired as he chased after you, throwing a hefty amount of snowballs. What even was this guy?! A human machine gun? Well it wasn't like you didn't throw back. Let's be deadass, it was for self-defense! You were literally on the defensive side while the hostile demon was going crazy on you.
"Charles! Waitāhold on dudeāYOā" and there goes a largeass snowball to your face as your back falls flat on the snow. Charles joins you down and laughs with you.
Everything was cold, yet your heart was warming you up entirely.
Something about this just felt like home. Like drinking hot cocoa during a snow storm wrapped around a blanket.
"We really gotta get home, Charles" you both stared at the setting skies. Snowflakes falling on both of you, soft and cold. "Can't we stay a bit longer?" you already know you can't win an argument with him. "Sure"
The both of you laid there, pointing occasionally at the sky as if the clouds weren't barely visible. Well, you know what they say, let the youth's imagination run free. After every passing minute, it was getting colder. You were about to speak up when Charles turned to look at you. Cheeks were dusted pink, possibly because of the cold (or some other reason). You turned to him, meeting him eye to eye.
You immediately sat up and threw snow at his face. "Shut up, demon child" "Mean!"
You both got up, dusted the snow off your clothes. "I was trying to be sweet" he huffs. "More like trying to be stupid" you scoffed. Passing by the familiar houses until you reach your place.
"Well, I'm expecting you later. You better come!" his tone was mostly playfulāa feigning tone of seriousness. Barely.
"Yeah, I promise. See you later, Charles" you stepped on your front porch. You waved goodbye before heading inside your warm home.
The evening came by quickly. You were outside the Chevalier household with your parents. Your father knocks on the door only to be greeted by the nefarious boy himself.
He immediately grabbed you, "(name)!" You were already getting teased by your parents because of this guy!
"Hi.." you patted him on the back. His parents came by and immediately invited you in.
Your family brought a few dishes to contribute. Christmas dinner was prosperous as it usually was. Aside from his siblings' banters of course (he totally didn't fling mashed potatoes towards you, but let's act like that never happened).
The entire family was gathered in the living room while you both were in his room. From the sounds of it, they were playing a family game. Loud laughter and some bickering here and there. It was heart-warming.
He was laying on his bed and staring at the clock, almost impatient. He groans, "how is it barely 11?!"
You could only laugh at his antics, "why? Are you that excited to open your presents?" "No! Wellāyeah, whatever, that too. But something else!"
You pondered what he could have had in mind, "Mind telling?"
"Nah. Not yet, at least." he grinned like the Cheshire cat. Ironic.
You both bantered with topics you could think of. That was until he suddenly beamed, "It's 11! (Name), come on let's go!"
His hand immediately takes hold of yours as he dragged you downstairs. "Slow down, dumbass! We'll trip!" He was not hearing you out at all.
He was speeding past the living room where your families were. They could only shake their heads and muse at the two teens.
"Charles! Where are we going?" you said between pants as he kept tugging you to catch up. "To the town square of course!" "Thought you were too busy to?"
"Not too busy for you, of course!" even if he was ahead of you, you could still see the grin plastered on his face.
Passing by countless structuresāeven after nearly tripping on snow and hidden rocksāyou both got to the Town Square.
There were a lot of people, so finding a clear area was a bit challenging. Eventually, you both settled near a tall tree.
"Sooooooo, would you mind telling me why you were so ecstatic to bring me here?" you questioned.
"Nope"
"Why not?"
"Cause no?"
"But why no?"
"Just wait!"
You let out a laugh after he finally got frustrated. Maybe after half an hour later, you could slowly feel him stiffen up beside you. You tilted your head to examine the boy.
"Is it too cold?" you asked. You were willing to hand him your scarf if his wasn't holding up well. "No, it's fine! Don't worry about it!" he immediately shook his head.
Five minutes probably passed by, and he was visibly fidgeting more. Your hand made its way towards his and you squeezed gently. "Charles?" he stiffened once more. "Yeah? What's up?"
People were starting to count down, it was almost 12 it seems. The snowfall was gentle, almost comforting. The distant cars passing by, the warming laughter and chatter of people. The warm light cascading through the windows. It felt extremely melancholic.
The counting reaches one, and the Christmas tree slowly lights up fully. Applauses and cheers were heard from all over. It was beautiful.
People greeted one another a 'Merry Christmas'. You turned to Charles to greet him. Seeing him standing there in awe, not looking at the tree but at you. You felt a warm rush across your cheeks.
"Charles? Merry Chā" he held out a small gift box. You were surprised, "t..thank you. Merry Christmas, Charles" you took the box from him, and held it in your hands.
"Merry Christmas, (name). I uh.." He jittered a bit. You undid the ribbon from the gift, carefully pulling the top open. It unveiled a beautiful heart-shaped amber necklace. Your chest tightened, it was so sweet.
"You didn't have toā" "but I did" his eyes fixated on yours.
"It's nothing much, just something to remind you of me when I'm in Japan. That's all. R..really" it was uncharacteristic of him to be this nervous.
"I'll be wearing it always" the amber charm reminded you almost of his honey colored eyes. "But is there something more you'd want to tell me?"
He nearly puffed away, "oh screw you for being too smart!" he huffed as you could barely hold in your laugh. "I know you too well. So tell me, what's up, Charles?"
"I don't usually express myself this way.." he looked uncomfortable that it made you want him to stop if he couldn't do it.
Before you could speak your mind and concern, heā
"I said I like yā" "stupid Charles!" you wrapped your arms around him, hugging him tightly like never ever.
"You're so stupid I could bawl my eyes out. I like you too!" he pouted, "You don't have to say those mean thingsāwait what?" the table turned once more.
"I said Merry Christmas" you lied.
"No you didn't!"
The both of you were around each other's embrace as the Christmas night went on with blaring fireworks in the skies. Soft snowflakes draping on every surface, every laughter, every smile.

The next few months were a blur. Sae got busy with his real relationship. You were trying to piece yourself together.
The waves crashing by the shore were a sound that gave you serenity. It made things sound like everything would eventually be okay. After all, waves come and go. Waves crash harshly, sometimes gently. That's how life works, no?
You took deep breaths. The sand was mildly crunching under your feet. Nothing could ever top up winter by the beach. It just felt different. It felt renewing.
It felt good to come back to your hometown for the holidays. It was usually quiet around these areas. Good.
But fate doesn't really work that way, it's usually ephemeral. Sometimes it's just a sore thumb sticking out. How irking.
"(Name)", the subtle tone made you freeze on the spotālike a deer in headlights.
You turned your head towards the speaking individual. Sae.
What's he doing here?
He was approaching you. Hands in his pockets, a look of indifference like nothing ever happened. The crunching of sand under his shoes made you cringe.
"Didn't think you'd come back around for the holidays" wow. He's actually making an effort to start a conversation. Wonder what's up in his ass this time.
"Didn't think I'd see you here either" you responded dismissively. You did not want to deal with him right now. Come on.
He stood beside you. All tall and confident, yet his face was of stoicism. "How have you been?"
"Been fine" you tried to respond as politely as you could. The last thing you want is to create a scene at the place you so adored.
The silence grew deafening and uncomfortable. Without even realizing, the question got out.
"How's your relationship" I mean, you truly were curious. At the same time it's embarrassing to ask the person you were just fussing over months ago a question like this.
"We broke up" huh.
"What?" you actually looked at him properly this time,
"She was too needy. Figured she was only in it for the fun-run" he shrugged.
"Oh" how awkward.
"I actually came here to talk to you" he spoke, but there was a subtle shift in his tone. Almost like it was calculated or practiced.
You tilt your head in confusion, "What do you mean?"
"Passed by your place and your mother told me you were around. It doesn't take a flight to figure out where you are"
What? Does he want a cake for knowing me or something?
"We haven't beenā" "Save it, Sae." you cut him off. This got him off guard for a split second. A surprised glint wavering in his eyes.
"I wanted to check up on you" he says in a quiet tone.
That was uncharacteristic for the one and only Sae Itoshi.
"Well, I've told you that I've been doing fine. I don't see what else you need to say" you retorted.
He was clearly unamused by whatever antic you had right now. His brows were lightly but visibly knitted together, almost as if he was trying to untangle your strings.
"Are you mad at me?" he questions.
You actually snorted. Full on broke character.
"Mad? I'm not the one reaching out after I broke up with my girlfriend. Just what am I to you?" your words lingered between the both of you. Strained and callousing.
He muses, "Is that what you're mad about?"
"I'm not mad, Sae" the frustration was slowly flickering inside you. Can't he stick it in his head?
"Then tell me what you feel." his words came so naturally. Almost felt like he cared for onceānoāthis was how he sounded like whenever you both were alone.
Is he trying to bring me back?
You felt a warm tinging sensation in your eyes. Shit.
"I..." you trailed off. Your throat was dry and you desperately tried to keep it together. A metallic taste was left on your tongue after you nibbled on your lip a bit harsher than intended.
He was composed right beside you, gazing into the ceaseless vast sea ahead. He waited.
"I don't want to talk right now" that's all you could mutter out,
"Then call me when you do" he bluntly says. As if he was already expecting your answer.
Should I even?
He faced you, his eyes piercing you with familiarity. It made you feel vulnerable.
"I'll be out tonight, but on most days you already know where to find me" he said it so blatantly, like he never hit your nerves.
What you didn't expect was a hand suddenly creating contact with your cheek. His thumb slowly brushed your cheek, gently wiping a tear that was taking its time to fall.
You instinctively moved away.
"You should go" you swallowed the lump forming in your throat, "I just need time to compose myself"
He slowly retracted his hand away from where it initially stayed, putting it back in his pocket. "Alright." plain, simple, and crashing.
"Take care of yourself, (name)" stop acting like you care.
He started to walk away, failing at what he wanted to do. But there'd more time in the future, no?
When he was out of sightāaway from the coastāyou sighed heavily. Letting a breath out like you've held it in for 20 agonizing years. You tried to compose yourself. Immersing yourself in the wave's ambience.
Serenity.
You felt ready to go. Shaking your head one last time to get the recent occurrence out of your head. Talk about ruining a good day.
You walked away from the beach, stepping onto the pavement of the sidewalk. Before you could dare take another glance at the scenery, an individual crashes right into you.
You shut your eyes before you hit the ground. "Fuckā" before you could even wobble to your feet, the individual holds you upright.
"Could you look at the sides before having a moment?" his tone was not exactly furiousāmaybe just a tad irritated. You open one eye and see who this bitch of a person is.
And you're stunned.
Out of everyone else, it really had to be the other Itoshi.
"(name)?" His brow was quirked up, but no difference with his older brother, he's as dry as he is.
"Good to see you, Rin"
He let go of you, and even took a step back.
"..good to see you too" that's the difference. He's more timid. It's almost ironic and endearing honestly.
"Are you staying over the entire holiday?" he questioned with piqued curiosity.
You give him a polite nod, "It's been a while since I was here last anyways"
He actually seemed glad, if you squint a lot.
"Ahādid I disturb your run?" you asked,
He shifted uncomfortably, "Not exactly, it's alright."
Rin wasn't mean or anything. He was just more reserved and again, timid.
At least to you.
Your phone rang, breaking the silence between you both. You rummaged through your shoulder bag and grabbed your phone.
"Sorry, I'll take this. It's my momā" you remembered something. Maybe it wouldn't be so bad to invite the man standing right in front of you.
Won't it be weird to his brother? Yeah, but let's be honest, who cares?
"Right. Rin, my mom is having a small celebration tonight. Maybe you'd like to join like old times?" you offered. A small smile etched on your lips.
Rin was a bit surprised, didn't think you'd offer him such. "Sure, I'll be there.." he mumbled.
"Later at 7, you could bring your parents too." Thank goodness he won't be around.
He nods as you finally walk near the fences to take the call. You wave him farewell as he continues his jog.

"Ya don't gotta force yourself to come with me back home, ya'know", your boyfriendāHiori Yoāspeaks with an underlying tone of solemn. "Cmon, Ririii. I haven't met your parents yet! How bad could they even be?", you responded back. Not in a tone where it'd push him back but more on a hopeful one.
It's not your fault that you didn't know any better. It's his for keeping it from you.
He sighs in defeat. His hand gently patting your head. "Alright, alright. We won't be taking that long 'nyways. Just need a few things there"
'It can't be that bad', he assures himself. He hopes.
Your hands were shaking under the table. It hasn't even been an hour since you both got to his house and there's already a lump in your throat.
"Yer really pursuing arts?" This was probably the 4th time his parents asked you that. The more they repeat the question, the more pushy they become.
"Y'know there's so much more professions out there and you really chose the lowest tier?", his mother retorts.
"Ya ain't reaching far with that little art degree yer having", his father was stern and had his arms crossed.
Hiori became more uncomfortable with each passing moment. He tried to stop them but he just got cut off every time.
"Cmon, Yo. You could've done better."
Another.
"Yer nice and all but.." his mother eyes you, up and down. A subtle click in tongue.
Another.
"This isn't yer.." his father clears his throat. "Yer last choice, Yo?"
Tears started to brim in your eyes. Your hands clutched tight on your lap.
"Ma, please. She's real passionate 'bout artsā" "oh c'mon, Yo. What do you know about passion? Passion ain't some flimsyĀ Ā degree that would get you nowhere. The least you could top with that dream is a sport."
You could feel the heat in her gaze.
"I assume that she ain't much of an athlete" sure, her face looked neutral, but her gaze held disgust and disappointment.
"Let's put that aside. Hows your sport, son?" his father tried to shift the topic for obvious reasons (and no, not because he felt pity nor uncomfortable. He really just didn't like the disappointment.)
Hiori didn't dare speak. Almost like he was hesitantānoāhe was thinking.
"Yo?" she calls out to her son,
"Respond when we're asking a question, it's disrespecā" "whadd'ya know 'bout respect?"
That quick statement made everyone in the room look at Hiori. His eyes looming with anger, with complete resentment.
Both his parents stared at him in disbelief. For a fraction of a second, you could've sworn you saw their facade crack.
"It's always been about passion and dreams, but all ya ever cared about were yerselves" his hand clenched the table,l
They were both stunned and speechless. Without knowing how to respond to their golden son's outburst, "What are you saying, Yo?!"
He didn't waste another breath responding, he took your hand and dragged you to his room.
Once you both were finally in the secluded comfort of his room, he shut the door and brought his arms around you.
His arms wrapped around your waist, securing you to him almost as if he's scared that you'd run away from him.
"'m sorry, (name). I'm terribly sorry."
He chanted apologies in a subdued tone whilst rubbing your back. It was comforting, really.
The tears you so tried to keep were slowly falling from your eyes, "am I really that incompetent?"
"No, no, no. Of course not. What are you saying, dear?"
"That's what they've all told me, yocchan. It's always a disappointment to my passion. But what if they're right? What if I won't make it far? What if I'll only regret this afā"
"I'm here. No, they aren't right. Ya could do so much with your passion. More than they ever could. And I know you will, that's cause yer you. If ya don't? Then who cares! I'll take care of ya" he gently pinches your cheek.
"But.. why did they have to be that mean" your voice cracked as you tried to express yourself. "Am I really not enough for you?"
He pauses, a surge of panic flows within him. "Of course you're enough. More than enough. More than anything will ever be. Please.. don't ever say that" he pleads.
You melted in his embrace, tear stains tainted your cheeks. Your breathing became stable, you felt calm. You felt complete and safe.
"I don't ever want to be a burden, Yo" you whisper. "Then don't give up. You'd never be a burden if ya just won't give up. 'ts that easy, my love" he cradles you in his arms, slowly swaying you side to side.
"You won't leave me, will you?" an audible crack in your voice was heard when you said those words, "I'm surprised that yer saying that instead of me" he lets out a wry chuckle. "Of course, I wouldn't. Yer as stuck as I am."
"I'm just sorry my parents are.. ya'know.. how they are. I really didn't want ya to be affected by them. Anyone but you"
You snuggled into the crook of his neck, "I could only imagine what you went through in the past years"
And that hit closer to home.
He never mentioned it, not even once. Yet you still sympathized with him after you were hurt by them. How could he ever ask for more? You were his lifeline. The only thing ever keeping him alive other than soccer and video games.

Nimbus clouds were draping over the late afternoon skies. You were standing just outside of the soccer field with your hands bawled into tight fists. Your mouth was dry. Bitter. How could it not, when you just found out that Saeāthe one and only Sae Itoshiā is actually in a relationship now?
A real, established relationship. Unlike the make-believe trash you both had for 6 months. 6 damn months. Practice should be done by now, can't it finish any quicker?
Just as you started to pace around the small area with your hand clutching your bag's strap, you see him. He's passing by your peripheral vision. Indifferent. Noāsomething's differentāhe looks lighter. The slightest bit of happier even.
You started to contemplate. Was this wise? Must you really do this? Must it really end? Was there even anything to start off with?
Almost like it was instinct, you started marching towards him. You didn't even know why you were doing this anymore. His name simply flowed out of your mouth way before the shift in his gaze could send chills down your spine.
"Sae.", you called out in a tone clearly forcing indifference.
"(Name)", he looks at you with clear disinterest. You could've sworn he was just gazing at you with warmth a week or two ago.
"How longā", of course your voice hitches at the very moment you've gathered yourself up. "How long?"Ā That's all you could ever mutter out.
A wipes his forehead with a towel he's holding, his brow quirking up. "How long is what?"
"Don't act clueless with me! You know what I mean!" the fury you felt was slowly taking a toll on you. "How long have you been with her?"
His face contorts into mock amusement, well, not really mocking. It's just the way he is, I suppose.
"A month."
His answer was blunt, yet sharp. And that's where it makes things worse. He sounds so sure. So promising.
A month? What?
"What do you mean a month?" Your heart was racing, you couldn't tell if it was anxiety or fury. Could be both at once.
"The answer to your question, a month." Again with his tone of disinterest.
You couldn't piece it together. Why did he hide it from you? Why wait until he announced it publicly? "Why did you never tell me?"
His brows furrowed, "I never told you because I didnāt see the reason to."
"SaeāI genuinely asked you about this two weeks ago!" You did. He started acting distant, so you asked. His answer was vague, yet straightforward.
"And so you did? I donāt think you need to know everything about my personal life. Itās not your obligation to pick up my pieces." Was he hearing himself?
"You aren't making any sense at all. What the fuck? Are you hearing yourselfā"
"What Iām saying is, I donāt think itās your obligation to be coming after me. Youāre only someone who I trust, nothing more."
You were spiralling. None of his words made sense. Was he speaking in a different language?
He turned his back and his steps crunched against the moist grass. The air was growing cold.
"Sae!" You exclaimed in frustration, "You make no sense!"
He kept walking. Not bothering to share a glance at you.
"What even were we?" You yelled,
He continued with no answer.
Right. It wasn't a make-believe between you both, it was delusion upon yourself.
You are your own foe.
You almost had the urge to chase after him. It only made you look stupid.
You were left standing near the field alone. The rest of the players have already gone back into the locker room or have gone out.
The rain was pouring slowly. Like it was mocking your pathetic image. Standing all alone with no clear answer.
Right. You came here for answers.
Yet all you got was a bunch of statements that didn't add up to your own questions. Instead, it added more of them into your head.
But one thing you knew for sure: it was never and never will be you.
Maybe it's because you weren't someone he needed. Maybe it's because you aren't enough. Maybe it's just because of you.

It wasnāt usual that Rin calls you over. Today was an exception. He was packing his stuff to stay at the schoolās dormitoryāconsidering how itās less of a hassle to stay there.
"Damn, you look like shit" you snorted a laugh.
He glared at you from his closet, "shut up and just help out."
"Woah thereāno need to be all scary to me" you wailed like a stupid looking dog.
He was pissed, though tried to stay composed (the irked vein on his forehead was close to popping). You took one of the empty boxes and looked at the label. 'Clothes'. Oh. You gave it to himā "what do you even need to pack? You donāt have much stuff aside from your soccer shenanigans. And besides, itās not like youāre leaving for good?" You question, looking around his nearly empty room.
"Just check the labels on the boxes" always so blunt. Yikes.
You went over to his desk, putting some not-so-necessary necessitiesāa few albums, music discs, and pictures. You looked over to the corner and saw a dusty case. You rememberedā
"Hey, Rin?" You asked, still staring at the case.
He responded with a short cold "What?", not bothering to look at you.
"When was the last time you played your acoustic?" You dusted it off a bit. This time he looks at where you were.
"I donāt know? Before I started playing the electric, I guess?" You hummed in response.
You unzipped the case and grabbed the acoustic guitar. It was clean, not even a spec of dust on it.
You strummed a few chordsāit definitely needed to be tuned again. But other than thatāit still sounded good.
You looked at him while holding the guitar. "Mind playing one more song?"
A warm smile plastered on your lips, the setting horizon casting a soft warm glow through the curtains. Rin looked at youānoāhe stared at you. Almost absent-mindedly.
He grumbled something under his breath before standing up. He had an unreadable expression all over his faceāregret? vulnerability? You just couldnāt put a finger to it.
He walked over to you, slowly reaching for the guitar. His actions were gentleāa little bit uncharacteristic of him.
He took it and sat on his bed, tuning the guitar properly. He spared you a quick glanceāhis eyes shimmered hesitanceāyet he fought it.
"Just like before?" he asked you,
"Just like before." there it is againāthat damned smile of yours that makes him feel weird. He doesnāt get itāhe brushes it off, thinking his feelings are annoying and weird.
He started to play 'Back to the Old House'. Hearing that song again after years felt like a rush of nostalgia.
All of a sudden, everything felt just like before. Where you both were just childish 11-year olds, trying to learn how to play the guitar now without his older brotherās help.
"Youāre doing the chords wrong dummy!" you adjusted his broken-looking finger. "How does someone even put their finger like that?!"
Rin stared as if he didnāt understand what he did wrong. So clueless.
"Youāre not even playing Back to the old house anymore!!! Youāre literally playing Forward to the New Asylum!" he kept staringāthis time his face was contorted.
"That wasnāt even funny"
You could only scoff and roll your eyes, "You never find anything funny anyway!"
Despite his cold demeanour, he really did have a soothing voice. His fingers gracefully slid against the guitar strings. He played better than beforeābut heavie, like something weighing against him. Emotion.
Ever since Sae left for Spain, he covered up his entire vulnerability. The first timeāyou thought it wasnāt the Rin you knew. And it really wasnāt.
But this time?
It felt like the same old Rin was there againānestled in your warm embrace, just like a little butterfly being cradled upon the flowerās buds. Fragile. Needy. Open.
His fingers hovered above the delicate strings. Each note hit more painfully than the lastāthe chords hung heavily in the silent room. The warm glow emitted through the glass, casting effortlessly on his features. Since when did he look so delicate?
"I would love to go back.. to the old house"
You knew better than anybody elseāRin was just a little kid who missed his older brother.
"But I never will..."
You never really knew what had happened between themābut you decided to stick to that.
"I never will..."
Meanwhile, his thoughts were running in a frenzy in his head. His brows furrowed, and his hand gripped the guitar tighter than before.
"I never will.."
Heās never felt this beforeānot to his family, his brother, nor anybody else. So why did he feel the need to put up a show for you? Will he ever find his resolve?
