thunder is captured in a tight chest, ominous and overwhelming and threatening to slice through lungs in jagged lines of indigo and ink and mist, threatening to hook claws along ribs and yank, until everything comes loose like threadbare cloth. it’s an intimate sensation, one kwangsu doesn’t realize is happening until doom is all that fills mind, and it has body seizing instinctively, eyes squeezed shut and desperate to drown out the way heartbeat drums a booming rhythm between ears, desperate to shut out the way his heartbeat sounds like the promise of the end.
water wells at the corners of eyes and falls freely, tracking salt and fear along round cheeks, and all kwangsu can do is gasp shallowly for a breath that doesn’t burn lungs or set fire to throat, that doesn’t send heartrate skyrocketing into nothingness, that doesn’t add to the thunderous roar of blood rushing past deaf ears and filling mind with that same promise of the end. it feels like eternity collapses into what is only a minute, gasps shallow and pained, tears leaving behind salt tracks and the promise of nothingness at the end of a long tunnel pressing down on his lungs only to repeat the cycle all over again.
the weight of something warm drags him from the churning froth drowning mind slowly, steadily, and the next breath kwangsu inhales is sharp and sudden, an explosion in the silence that suddenly dawns over him - gasp snags on lips and eyes fly open, tears streaking cheeks and an ache settling behind chest that recedes slowly, steadily. there’s a distant realization that it is ziggy’s thumb that is swiping a soothing arch against skin, that it is ziggy’s voice murmuring reassurances under breath, that it is ziggy watching him fly apart at the seams and staying by his side. the steady lull of thumb swiping a path snags wavering attention and it’s what he zeroes in on, what he slows and steadies breath to until he falls to the rhythm of it.
fingers twitch, flinch, before tightening vice-like ‘round the other’s, a sign that mind is no longer drowning in complete silence and static and everything and nothing ; an apology is already resting on cracked lips, scratching up throat and ready to fall covered in crimson and indigo and that same ink promising the end. but the words die when wet gaze flutters to the hand still curled ‘round his, to the steady swipe of ziggy’s thumb against skin, and the apology turns to a grateful noise ( wet and soft but genuine, loud - an i’m okay somewhere interwoven in the noise ).

lashes form a fan against cheeks and peace stills expression, kwangsu looking for all the world like he has already fallen asleep. but amused laughter catches on tongue at the other’s words, a small smile forming ‘pon lips. “in my room fighting sleep all on my own ?” comes the answer to a question coated in rhetoric, an almost innocence borne from the cotton filling mind and from the familiar comfort of their study booth ( and from ziggy’s warmth, unfurling behind his chest and chasing away the worries that having a nap when he still has too many readings to study always coaxes ). there is an unspoken safety in the booth, in the other’s shoulder firm yet not uncomfortable under his cheek, a soothing salve to the panic that would otherwise take root in heart - where would kwangsu be, really, if ziggy isn’t there to coax him into needed breaks ( one breath from a panic attack, from an anxiety attack, from heartbeat trembling too fiercely and from breath stuttering in chest ; not a pleasant place to be ). “i suppose it will do..” lashes flutter open and gaze focuses on his lap, the casual disregard coloring voice tapering into a fluster that colors cheeks dusty rose. “no you aren’t - if you’re making me nap, then you’re obligated to nap too.” cheek rubs pointedly against the other’s shoulder, an affectionate motion not characteristic of kwangsu yet quite fitting, as ziggy is only one of so few people who is privy to see him when exhaustion wears down his walls and leaves only a tired shadow behind.
𝔸ℕ 𝔼𝕐𝔼ℝ𝕆𝕃𝕃 𝕆𝔽 𝔸𝔻𝕄𝕆ℕ𝕀𝕊ℍ𝕄𝔼ℕ𝕋 comes with an inevitable tenderness; ziggy may have other friends ( in a number that perhaps encompasses the entire student body ) but very few fail to elicit the same sense of reverence and intimacy the law student’s learnt how to attach to kwangsu and kwangsu alone. if he’s being honest, it’s the rhetorical question he asks the other that he often throws back at himself –– where would he be, without kwangsu at his side ? “hmm ... sure. but isn’t this just so much more fun ?” ziggy challenges, eyebrows wriggling in even more smugness than he’d had prior; where he has a multitude of friends, the latter has ... less, and the judge - to - be is more than happy to provide his companionship and time to someone who’s certainly more than worthy. “glad to know i’m exemplifying adequacy.” the boy jokes, though he’s careful not to move too suddenly in the fear of disrupting the other’s comfort. “but –– huh ––” further words are stilted, caught off-guard in his throat by the slight nudge of cheek against clothed shoulder; moments of small intimacy, no matter how rare, cause an extraordinary amount of time for ziggy to calm the stuttering of his poor heart around someone who’s meant to be only a friend. there’s a small smile, impossible to erase, that lifts up the tired corners of his mouth, and despite the other’s demand he can’t help but find himself both exhausted and wide awake at the same time. “i ... i suppose just a quick break wouldn’t kill me.” muses ziggy absently, head coming to rest against the other’s almost in second nature; a pause. “this okay ... ?” he attempts to look as confident as he sounds, but teeth worrying his bottom lip as he glances down at kwangsu best as he can tell a whole different story.

he’s staring again, sharp, cat-like eyes quite obviously gazing at seina as if she’s downright the most beautiful being to ever grace the earth, holding his breath without even seeming to realize it as he takes in her features — silky hair, pretty eyes framed by long lashes, rosy lips that always leave him wondering whether they’re really as soft as they look, and perhaps the cutest little nose he’s ever seen. the sight always makes haein’s poor heart ache, yet he can’t quite bring himself to act upon his feelings, simply too afraid of being rejected and ruining their precious friendship. his gaze follows the girl’s lips as she speaks, yet he doesn’t actually seem to register her words, a thoroughly confused expression settling upon his features once he manages to snap out of his trance. “ huh? what did you say? ”
ℍ𝔸𝔼𝕀ℕ'𝕊 ℚ𝕌𝔼ℝ𝕐 ℍ𝔸𝕊 ℍ𝔼ℝ 𝕋𝕌ℝℕ𝕀ℕ𝔾 her head, surprised –– yet amused –– giggles leaving pink lips as her cheeks flush rose against otherwise porcelain skin. “i haven’t bored you, have i ?” seina asks, though there’s no real sting in her hesitance; of everyone she’s met, it’s the boy in her company she finds herself most comfortable to be around –– the most herself with, no matter how slow in the process she is of still trying to figure that out. hands come to wrap around her glass of iced tea, taking slow sips before staring out over the park across from the pair once more. “i was saying it looks beautiful today.” she repeats, though she hasn’t lost the softness that tinged her tone the first time she’d said the words aloud. “it would be nice to dance out in the grass, don’t you think ?” reluctance bubbles in her throat before she adds, voice even softer, “if only i had someone to dance with ...”

it’s nearly impossible to pretend that he no longer cares about brooke, that he isn’t the least bit affected by all the strangers she always brings home to keep her body warm at night, perpetually fooling around right under his nose, without ever bothering to take a step back and consider his feelings. however, deep down, hyunjin knows he’s got no right to be jealous or upset, because they’re not together anymore, and she doesn’t belong to him — yet that seems to be easier said than done. his big, doe-like eyes are glued to the fresh hickeys adorning the girl’s neck, plush lips slightly parted as he gapes at her, seemingly struggling to conceal his disappointment, but to no avail. “ can you please try to keep it down next time? ”
ℝ𝔼𝔻 𝕍𝕀𝕆𝕃𝔼𝕋 𝔽𝕃𝕆𝕎𝔼ℝ𝕊 along her neck, dark hair nestled up in a chopstick-tied bun in an attempt to make last night’s escapades all the more evident. she knows she isn’t supposed to care about what her roommate ( and ex - boyfriend, unluckily enough ) thinks of her and her many rendezvouses –– but there’s a sickening feeling in brooke’s chest that acknowledges that to spite something in hyunjin is one of the reasons she lures so many people back home in the first place. seemingly innocent eyes widen, red barely painted lips parting to make way for bunny teeth to show. “oh ?” the girl responds, husky voice taking on an uncharacteristic coldness towards the other that she can only hope shines through. “i wasn’t aware i was being so loud ...” she was. “though i’m sure you enjoyed the show, still.”

𝕋ℍ𝔼 𝕊𝕌ℕ 𝕀𝕊 𝔸 𝕋ℝ𝔸𝕀𝕋𝕆ℝ is asia’s first thought in the morning, once the bright light of the star sneaks its way through drawn curtains in an attempt to assault its next victim; it’s another reminder of the fact that come daylight she’s once again met with the absence of warmth on the other side of her bed –– one she’d grown all too familiar with the previous night, and several nights before. sure enough: the girl turns to find herself alone in comforted sheets, and gaze turns to the figure that reappears, the male’s fully dressed demeanor a stark contrast to her barely clad form. there’s a raging disappointment that swoops in, further cracking her heart in two more than it had already broken, but asia tries to push past the aching, pathetic yearning in her chest to let “dressed already ?” leave her lips –– hoping it’s not as desperate as she sounds ( but there’s no denying the contriteness in her voice –– the bitterness ). “let me guess –– this was a mistake. again.”
