Here’s an ink/tone version of my cover for PATHFINDER: HOLLOW MOUNTAIN #5. For an issue synopsis and a look at the full-color cover, go here: http://www.dynamite.com/htmlfiles/viewProduct.html?PRO=C72513024182505031 .  I was offered my choice of a few cover concepts to illustrate.  I chose the slice-of-life option.  Given my druthers, I always choose the slice-of-life option.

I’ve done three covers for this miniseries, all with the same process: 1) draw some line-art, 2) paint a gray tonal background, and then 3) paint the hues on a “color” blending layer in GIMP. Step three is always a bit of a roller-coaster ride between “whoa, this is great!” and “ugh! This is garbage!”.

The Rules Cyclopedia Own-Zone

Rules Cyclopedia is my favorite version of D&D for a couple of reasons:

It’s a complete game in just one book, no need for a separate Dungeon Master’s Guide or Monster Manual.

It’s got Dwarves, Elves and Halflings as classes and I’m a weirdo who likes that.

It’s got clear tiers of play: first you’re an adventurer, then you settle down and start ruling your own domain, and then you go on adventures through time and space and become a god.

But one thing I especially love about it is all the cool stuff that’s hidden in there that you might miss on a first reading:

All non-human clans possess a magical relic. In the dwarves’ case, they can use their Forge of Power to make a special oil which allows them to build EARTHSHIPS!!!

A Magic-User who does not wish to settle down can effectively become a vizier to a local lord.

If a Magic-User does wish to settle down and build a tower all local lords will immediately cease all their claims on that patch of land, declare to all their subjects that they are not to meddle with the Magic-User’s business, and if the Magic-User ever goes to war they will aid them… unless it’s a war with another Magic-User, because fuck that shit.

There’s so much story potential there.
