Awesome lighting!
Does anyone else really like the whole mall aesthetic (probably an 80′s/90′s kid thing) but instead of consumerism there’s micro-apartments, a whole lot more vegetation, and a commons area? Maybe with keeping the whole food court thing as a place for people to eat together.
holy shit this would be great. or a bunch of the former storefronts could be used to hold mini-museums, or small-audience movie theaters, and a couple could be divided into quiet rooms.
honestly this is what we could be doing with dead malls: keep the 80s/90s aesthetics but turn them into cute, affordable housing complexes (also keep the food courts as they are).
#I think an empty storefront could be anywhere from a 1-4 bedroom apartment#put in plumbing and walls and….not fluorescent lighting#you could still probably make them cost less than normal apartments#and you could even cut down on the parking space & build more stuff
^ I love your ideas!
as someone who’s worked at the mall I can tell you the back of the shop sometimes has a back door to a long corridor to a freight elevator to send all the shipped products and out… always handy to have a back door and freight elevators are super convenient.
I think I remember seeing that they are actually doing this in some places.
tbh the times I’ve worked in a mall I always thought about this, and how I loved the comradery between mall employees. it was a tiny culture where we all banded together in our hate/occasional joy of our jobs.
I always think malls turned into apartments would look a lot like space station interiors.
considering a lot of malls are closing, and leaving these massive unused spaces, this could be something that could be done. I know there are at least a few malls that haven’t 100% shut down but all but one wing is vacant (malls generally have a left/right wing or east/west/south with a central area) and in one of the vacant wings a church has rented out several shops and converted them into their worship space and other church related service facilities.
For actual housing modifications and permits would need to be issues but if a city actually wanted to invest in it’s self, it’s something that COULD be done.
love all these posts! This would be revolutionary like tinyhouses!

What if, when you die, you find yourself in an alien body, holding a bong, around a bunch of aliens asking you “how was it?”
