I am once again on my Sherlock bullshit (though am I ever not?), particularly with Elementary. I will die on the hill that Jonny Lee Miller is one of the best Sherlocks I've ever seen, and Elementary is likely the best modern adaptation out there.

For one, Jonny Lee Miller just absolutely nails the very complex nature of Sherlock Holmes that is both faithful to the original material (in spirit AND letter), while also bringing his own truths to it. (When Elementary started airing in 2012, Miller had very recently started his own journey into addiction recovery. He'll be 14 years sober this September!) His understanding of all the layers of Sherlock is on par with Jeremy Breet for gods sake!!

And then Watson. Joan fucking Watson. She's just as unhinged as Sherlock, which is truly essential to a good Watson. There's just no way for a sane, grounded, normal doctor to be a part of Sherlock's life, Watson has got to have their own minor insanity. Joan is able to operate socially in ways that Sherlock isn't, she's the warmer kinder part of the duo, but she also dives headfirst into every absurd scheme. She chastises Sherlock for trying to break into a morgue and perform an illegal autopsy, but then can't get over her own professional pride and takes over because Sherlock is doing it wrong.

Elementary is not a perfect show, by any means. They make some fascinating choices, especially in the later seasons, and it's got some painful levels of copaganda (Captain Gregson and Detective Bell have my entire heart, don't get me wrong, but.. yeesh). But it's got so much heart, so much love for the stories of Sherlock, but also all the people that end up in his life. The people that he chooses to allow into his life.

I'm gonna continue watching an absurd amount of this show, and also reread the Conan Doyle, and I hope everyone appreciates the deluge of Elementary posts that are about to appear
