Its actually called Ethylene hormone and almost all plants secrete it. It induces ripening and cell death and that is why you should keep all fruits away from each other if you rather them stay fresh, or putting them close together if you want them to ripen faster. Arising the saying: One bad apple spoils the whole bunch
