Hi sorry if this is a stupid question but I'm a new fan. What's the lore behind damon hill? Like in his tweets about merc and george's car, everyone is talking about it being more impacting coming from him so like what is the story there?

admittedly, i am not one of those fans who knows all the stories/history of the sport because i only started watching in '24 and i haven't had the time & opportunity to go back to watching old races from the 90s. so if i get anything wrong, i apologize and feel free to correct me for those who knows! (note: answer is based on my understanding so take it with a grain of salt)

bottomline is: Damon Hill was the F1 world champion in 1996. His fight for the title started when he joined Williams-Renault in 1993, alongside teammate Alain Prost. Prost won that year then for the next two years, Hill and Schumacher fought for #1 closely with Schumacher winning twice. Finally in 1996, Hill won the wdc with 97 points; Jacques Villenueve (rookie teammate of Hill) 2nd with 78 points and Schumacher 3rd with 59 points.

in my understanding, the reason why Hill's comments about Merc and George are more impacting is: (1) former world champion, and (2) his run in Williams-Renault was also seen as a "car merchant" type thing due to the car being made well by Adrian Newey & because during 1996, his rookie teammate Villeneuve was doing really great against him for someone who just joined the grid. So that's why people are also seeing it with more impact as he was deemed as a driver with a car advantage. For him to call out/comment on George's situation in Merc...well you can connect the dots as to why people are reacting.
