What a wonderful surprise to return to. Spring can come in a matter of five days, apparently 🌱🌸🌷🙌🏻. #Vladimir #Russia #spring
Friday! 🍲☕️🍚🍰🍖🍻🍷#Kazan #coffee #snacksonsnacksonsnacks
LOLLL, spotted: a little kid sticking his hand in his pants, then proceeding to pull down said pants in the middle of the sidewalk. He had enough decency to walk to the edge, toward the grass. Too bad for him, his mother --bewildered and embarrassed-- caught him before he could relieve himself. #чтоделать #monitoryourdamnkids #kidsdowhattheywant #doesntmakeitanybetter
Group pic, day 1 in #Kazan 🌞💃🏻💃🏻👣
First time doing #platzkart solo. Onwards to #Kazan! #victoryday #деньпобеды #казань #Russia
The only way to get through an early train ride. Thank you #favcuz @jaaythuq for the beautiful accessories 😘💃🏻💃🏻 @official_flo #rly? #rly #bracelets #russiancountryside #Russia #Vladimir #Moscow #trains
“It’s at its loudest. Is that enough?” the older gentleman asks his lady friend. 😤😑. My neighbors for the next 2.5 hours. Because you two are old and cute (his Asian girl-friend rockin’ the red, ftw!), I will keep my mouth shut. Plus, it’s an old American film #onblast. #Vladimir #Russia #oldpeople #lifeseniors
A little a cappella (choral?) performance from VLSU’s Студенческая Весна 2015 (Student Spring). They killed it! 🎶🎶 So glad to see students aren’t drowning in homework, at least, some of the time ☺️😘. More photos and videos to come on my tumblr! Annnd for fellow Lord Jeff-ers – makes you miss “The College on the Hill,” doesn’t it? Sure hits a little close to home for me! #Vladimir #Russia #spring #Amherst #thecollegeonthehill #acappella #choir #chorus #aspringescape #springishere
Lover’s Quarrels
If I got a ruble for each time I've witnessed some relationship squabble...Globus, the university, the stairwell at THE GYM. C'mon ppl!
Throwback to a couple of weekends ago, mostly for myself. Having all-Russia related photo posts in one place is a must! It'll be fun looking through these on an aggregated space one day, heh. The caption: LOLLL the stewardess just told me "table can't be open. Must be closed" like three times, pointing at my neighbor's/Russian child's open table!!! Does this baby look like my child???Meanwhile......her actual mother is passed out. #imonly24tho #mistakenforamother Annnnd since this is Russia, where women in most parts of the country still tend to marry younger than their counterparts in the USA and manage to retain their stellar hotness even after giving birth, #illtakeitasacompliment and #letitgo. Thanks for humoring me! Spotted: on a surprisingly full flight from NYC back to Moscow in April. Transaero, ftw. Of note, there were also 50+ Hasidic Jews on this plane! Nothing wrong with this, obviously, but novel for me. And this, coming from a native New Yorker! It was actually really cool because they observed religious protocol in the waiting area, all together :) P.S. How is it that the food on the way back from NYC was infinitely better for my American tastebuds (though most non-Americans would also probably agree. Not to mention, I appreciate all sorts of cuisines!) than on the way there??? Duh, because of where the planes stock up....Sorry, Russia? Your desserts were better, though. Maybe Transaero felt it should make a better impression, where and when it counts -- the flight to NYC was completely empty. Food for thought...
Left today scrounging around helplessly (okay, so not so helplessly) in the dark. Came home to a beautifully lit lamp! The generous work of my neighbor's guest, a certain "molodoy chelovek." Technically meaning "young man," but the term is used in literally every situation to address men (single and under the age of 25) here. I love the Russian language's versatility! Though for a foreigner, the flexibility can make learning a frustrating endeavor, sometimes 😅
Today’s forecast. Is this a joke? Bring it on, русская зима! #russianwinter #frigid but no matter because the skies are beautifully clear and the air #crisp
It's happening...I'm turning into a homemaker (but only on weekends! Heh). Freshly baked carrot oatmeal cookies soon to come! This is my life in Russia. Just kidding. Real things must get done here as well! For instance, three-hour long shopping trips to hunt down specific ingredients...in Russian. My vocabulary on groceries has never been so extensive. Details on more real -actually real- work here in Vladimir to come~~
Fuck yeah. Thanks кафе угли for being TWO hours late. I’ll still eat it, hmph! #Midnight snack. Actually this is #dinner
This is the kind of shit I wake up to, and I LOVE her for this! #talent #nofilter #fabfuture #smiles :))))
Thank you for keeping me sane, making me chuckle, snort, LOL, ROFL, and giggle, always, and for illustrating our #FABFUTURE!!! xoxoxoxo
8 time zones and nearly 5,000 miles ain't nothin but a chicken wing.
Vladimir, you are wonderfully wonderful, but on those days you drive me completely insane -- and slowly deprive me of vitamin D -- Jelani will keep me rolling on the fuckin floor dyin. Always. <333333
“When you learn words and phrases, you also learn cultural values. Many words do not have a direct translation, because the concepts simply do not exist in another culture. Language reflects society’s constant evolution, which is why it’s still easier for humans to keep up than it is for machines. “There is simply no replacement for learning a foreign language.”

A fellow Fulbrighter posted this and while I hate to quote the exact lines he did, these truly are the only quote-worthy lines. What this quote says is exactly the reason I love languages. Sometimes, there really ISN'T any other way to express one term, phrase, or sentence exactly in two, three, four (you get the idea) languages. Languages provide insight into the way a people relate to and perceive their relationship to the people, things, and world around them. Some languages are very very expressive (fill in the blank). Others have a knack for shortening an entire sentence into a mere four characters (ahem, Korean). And still others find comfort in utilizing third-person syntax to dissociate personal responsibility from a situation (hello, Russian). Obviously, these are simplifications. The point is, languages are incredibly complex because it is the product of a diversity of human emotion and thought. And both must be -- and are -- culturally specific.
I just do not think it is possible to understand a people, society, culture without learning its language. Yeah, yeah, but what if you go live in said country, within said society, with said people? If you do so without knowing some semblance of the primary spoken language...I would say you are missing out.
