(because everyone’s AUs are either like rock bands or marching bands and I’m in neither)
((this is based off MY personal experiences in concert/jazz/varsity band at my school))
CORAN is the band director. Many of his affairs bleed into band time, but always with no context. This makes everything he does questionable
HUNK is an oboe. His first band directors in elementary school had wanted to put him on a bass instrument because of his size, but when they asked, he was the only one who wanted to play oboe
LANCE is a trumpet. Loud and usually a center of attention? And also a large part of his Cuban heritage? Yes please.
KEITH is a sax. Typically plays the alto, but has played the others. He was entranced by the shiny metal and the many buttons. The student councilor in his elementary school allowed him to play it because it was one of he only social-ish things he wanted to do.
PIDGE is a trombone. Many a pun is made. She thought it was cool, cuz it was the only wind instrument that didn’t have keys.
ALLURA only plays bass instruments. Generally she’s a tuba. She also plays the upright bass. She wanted to play the biggest instruments because she went to school with Lotor, and he kept saying how they were to big for her to play
SHIRO is on percussion. Daddy drums. Bah dum tissss. unbeknownst to everyone else, he also plays French horn
LOTOR is a clarinet. While I don’t have anything against clarinets, they can be kinda stuck up also the black body of the instrument and the sound kind of fit for Lotor the best in my mind. (Sorry clarinets)
One time, Lotor was being a bit of an asshole. Allura and Lance were trying to explain something to the group and Lotor kept interrupting and mansplaining. After a while, Hunk just started squeaking on his reed whenever Lotor opened his mouth.
Hunk: *squeeeaaaaaaaakkkk*
(this is literally the only reason I created this AU)
Shiro likes to make fun of his little brother with well timed drum/bells/timpani/percussion-in-general sounds. He also likes to help Coran out when he’s trying to be funny
One time a guy saw Allura and Hunk hanging out with their instruments and decided to try to go after Allura. He came up to them and started to hit on Allura, and because he found out they were leaving soon, he offered to carry her instrument for her. Hunk had to leave first, and the guy just straight up blanched when he took the tiny case of his oboe and walked away
Keith doesn’t really know how to make friends, but tries his best. He’s wanted to be friends with Lance for a long time so he very awkwardly asked if he wanted to plays with the keys of his instrument. (Don’t ask)
Shiro: hey, wasn’t practice like, 3 hours ago?
Shiro: you still have your neck strap on
Lance and Pidge like to meme in the band room. Shiro does too, but only when only Lance can hear him, to drive him a bit mad
“do you have any valve oil?”
Keith and Hunk become friends because they’re usually in the band room several minutes earlier than the others to set up their instruments. They talk
Lance is proud to a) be his section leader, and b) the main soloist
He has his own instrument. Its bright blue and creatively named Blue. She’s his baby, and he’s basically married to her
Hunk: hey Lance, you wanna hang out later?
Lance: sorry Hunk, but I got a hot date tonight
Hunk: …..you’re blowing me off to practice aren’t you?
Lance: What?!? Of course not, you know if never do that to you!
Lance has been playing for several years. Like many, many, more than other people. He started at a young age because it’s part of his family to be musical. It was either an instrument, singing, or dancing. Lance chose all three
Keith had been playing for less time than everyone else, by a few years, but because he basically only did homework and went to the gym before band, he basically practiced every other minute of the day. It made him happy, so he kept doing it
Shiro is never wrong when it comes to the beat. Never. If it’s being kept steady, everyone pays attention to him to keep time, even Coran.
Allura on the other hand, is always in tune.
Pidge’s short arms can just barely reach seventh position
Lance enjoys using band/music pick up lines in and outside of band
Overnight band trips are insane. The bus rides are either the best or the worst. What happens on band trips, stay on band trips.
Technically Keith is better, but musically Lance is
Pidge’s instrument has a weirdly loose neck opening for the mouthpiece so her mouthpiece always falls out. You hear the distinct ‘ding’ of a mouthpiece hitting the floor and a soft “…shit”
Shiro sometimes teaches Keith how to play the kit and just hovers around nervously when ever Keith is in the percussion section.
Coran started a Jazz band. Only like 10 people joined but it’s okay! They still sound hella good. Shay and Nyma, a trumpet and tenor respectfully both joined as well. As well as Plaxum, a pianist.
Shiro got Matt(who’s a flute) to modify his prosthetic and make a hand that had different mallets/sticks/brushes on it to see if it’d work. It didn’t.
Lance was “mad” that not only did Keith do better academically than him, but also better on technical/theory tests. Keith on the other hand thought it was cool that Lance did pretty well in his classes all while still having friends and having fun, and also admired him for his musicality.
One time Lance walked into the band room and Keith had his hair tied up and he just. Choked. He also sort of forgot how to play his instrument.
Some days/for some songs Keith will just be told to play another sax because the sections not strong enough
One time Shiro just sat in the rows and pulled out a french horn and played it better than most of the section.
One time, Keith got so mad at a person that he took their reed out of their mouth and shoved it into the wall and handed it back to them (it’s horrifying. Look up wall test)
Because of his tendency to switch saxes, Keith always just kinda has his mouthpieces and reeds on him.
Hunk mourns the loss of all his reeds and is some kind of magical creatures that’s only ever broken three reeds before. One of the times was actually Lance’s fault.
As a bonding exercise, Coran put all the band members into pairs and has them switch instruments for a day. They borrow mouthpieces and reeds from the school and try out the other instruments. Obviously Lance and Keith are put together, and are fairly good, at each other’s instruments, after getting over some major differences.
Lance thought Keith was over exaggerating when he freaked out about his instrument suddenly unclipping from the neck strap. He screamed when it happens to him.
Hunk know how to fix a lot of common minor to moderate problems on every single instrument
