WHAT WE KNOW / KEY POINTS;
Regulus Arcturus Black was the last child to be born into the Noble and Most Ancient House of Black. He was raised to be polite and sophisticated, to know when to speak and to remain silent. Never to be an heir but rather a suitable suitor, his parents ensured he was well versed in languages, literature and politics. He was moulded to become the perfect son, the face of the family whenever his older brother was not available. He idealised his brother, envied the boldness which the other held in his heart. It was the way he wished he could be but he would remain the soft-hearted child for years to come.
He arrived at Hogwarts, giddy and thrumming with excitement. Though he was to proper to show it. Regulus was sorted into the Slytherin house after minutes of deliberation. The hat crooned to him about a new life, a better life, if only he were to take a chance. He refused on the spot, the memory of nails so much like talons digging into his shoulder and a hissed words of βremember your place.β As easy as that, his fate was sealed. He went to Slytherin, just as his parents desired. During his early years, Regulus was subjected to harsh bullying from his housemates due to the two black sheep of his family. As such he was expected to prove himself to them which included but was not limited to participating in learning the dark arts. He further proved himself after gaining a place on the Quidditch team in his third year and becoming a member of the slug club. He also became the top of his year, spending hours upon hours on studying and reading ahead of his classes during the holidays.
Never one to make friends easily, Regulus tended to isolate himself from his peers. He enjoyed the solitude as it allowed him to work and think without interruption. He did have a particular soft spot for those on the Quidditch team, though he would deny it vehemently if someone were to bring it up. He was a tightly locked book and though he had many acquaintances, he was more inclined to call Kreacher a friend over any of them.
The day his brother was disowned left him shaking. Regulus had watched from the stairs as the event unfolded, the sound of his motherβs shrieks and the booming voice of father ingrained in his mind. He was told never to speak of or to Sirius again. Feeling scorned and betrayed by the other boy, Regulus found it easy to do just that and promptly moved through his life distancing himself from the feelings of adoration he once held. Slowly, the softness he once wore on his sleeve was hidden away. Regulus locked away his emotions, buried them deep beneath and became a darker version of himself.
Regulus was not prepared to meet Voldemort but when he did, he understood completely why those around the man fell to their knees. He gained the dark mark two months before he graduated Hogwarts and had felt a certain type of pride at that moment. As time moved on, a bitter taste laced his mouth. The Dark Lord was cruel to the point of insanity and his once bright cousin was falling down the same path. He finds himself losing faith in the cause for blood purity as the days go on.
