I was looking at @Sumi_Shio_9's amazing art on twitter, which made me want to draw some scenarios like this.

For that second picture, I ended up redrawing Nico's expression 3 times, since I wasn't really sure which one captured best the "completely caught off guard" feel I wanted to portray.

The first version I drew I also had Maki standing more upright:

I thought it made the pose look stiff though so I increased the tilt on Maki's body, even if it made it look less "solid". I'm still not sure if it's better though. Maybe I could have exaggerated the tilt a little more. Or maybe these are small details that only I notice because I drew it? lol.

I always feel like I lack the "artistic sense" to be able to instinctively understand and pick out what works better for things like these. It goes for gesture, character expressions, or even color palettes. I've seen people say that practicing drawing is as much developing your "eyes" as an artist as it is developing your motor skills. I hope they're right.

When I put my drawings side by side with the ones from the artists that inspire me, my works always look so bad in comparison, even the ones I felt looked great while I was working on them, lol.

I still have a long ways to go.

I had decided to take a break from longer drawing projects, but I still don't want to get too rusty, so I went ahead and added some light coloring on these doodles. I also used a different brush from the more pencil-like one I'm used to. It has a very neat G-Pen feel to it which I'm bad at using, but I believe should help me get used to drawing neater lines, lol.

Because AO3 is that site. Because AO3 was that site long before you decided AO3 was better than the sites you bullied us off of before, and I can promise you if someone somehow comes up with a fanfic site you like better specifically for the 'gross stuff' you'll try to bully us off that too so you can benefit from it.

AO3's specific core purpose is to preserve fanfiction, yes, but it was also instigated as a host site for the fanfiction that kept getting yeeted off other platforms like Wattpad. Its designed to preserve all fanfiction, not just the fanfiction you, personally, think is 'allowed' to be written.

AO3 is the site for all the gross stuff the freaks make. We've been there just as long as you. We've been funding it just as long as you have. AO3 has specifically said you have a place here. The timeline was literally:

Wattpad/FF.net/LiveJournal purge fanfics > AO3 is born > The people who's fics got purged moved over to AO3 > AO3 gains popularity as the best functioning site > The people who pushed for the fics to be purged off Wattpad move to AO3 > The same people try to push for AO3 to purge fics.

AO3's source coding is open-access. You go make a polished, strict, rigid site where nothing 'icky' is allowed. You go make a site where you can control what is hosted. We already have our space.

AO3 was specifically made for the stuff likely to be purged from other sites.

It was built around "we need to own the servers" so we wouldn't have to deal with anyone else's judgment calls about what was acceptable in fanfic: Not corporate sponsors, not evangelical religious groups, not "save the children" activists... and not other fans who think that The Gross Stuff should be banned from public view, only shared via private email after you've sent in a request heavily laden with special keywords.

Some of the founders remembered when slash fanfic was kept under the table at the dealer's room, distributed with brown paper wrappers only to people who knew to ask for it specifically.

And they said: Fuck that. Our art is not a crime and we're not going to be ashamed of it. If you are ashamed to have your art next to it - there's a whole wide internet that's ready to host your G-rated genfic.

AO3 was built for the stuff that was unwelcome elsewhere.

I like to think that Nico keeps using these super corny lines on Maki. Maki acts like they're lame but she's secretly so charmed by Nico that they still end up working every time.

This was meant less as a full scenario and more as a coloring study. I was trying to copy the slightly moody, more intimate composition/palette from some of artist ree_kkr's drawings.

Anyways I'm currently working on a more comedic comic featuring Nozomi.

(WIP) AU where Nico becomes the personal maid of Lady Maki of the Nishikinos

Here are some WIPs from an AU that's been floating around in my head where Nico becomes Maki's personal maid (just to have some art to show on this blog lol). I'm working on a small comic in this scenario too, but drawing always takes me a lot of time so it may take a while.

I want to finish lining and coloring these too eventually. I want to try leveling up my coloring technique...

New year writing goals

Trying to write more often is self-care. We write because we love it. Let's not make it a chore.

There is more to writing than getting words on the page. Research, plotting, outlining, daydreaming, making moodboards... all that is writing.

Not being able to write some days is NOT failure. Breaks are essential to refill your creative energy. Maybe just listen to your writing playlist and relax a bit or read a book or watch a show that inspires you.

Word counts are not absolute. If you realize you can't achieve your word count in the set timeframe, revise it. It's NOT failure, it's being efficient and aware of your own energy.

Be kind to yourself. Not finishing your goal is okay. Just engage with your creativity. Your mental health is more important.
