Ryuji was confused. He wants to help me? It had been a while since anyone had taken a genuine interest...

Not that I deserve it, he thought to himself. He’d been nothing but a burden to his mom, his teachers, and his team since his injury. He lashed out every chance he got, his frustration unwilling to stay bottled up inside, and he was sure everyone was sick of his attitude. Maybe that was why this stranger… why Akira could be so kind. He didn’t know how much of a pain in the ass Ryuji could be…

But he was sick of wallowing. Ryuji wanted to be better. He wanted to move on, to forget his stupid knee and all the pain it caused him. He wanted to get on with his life. What if Akira showing up out of nowhere was a sign? He normally didn’t believe in hokey things like fate, but right now he wondered if the universe had dropped Akira into his life to set him straight…

“That feels a little deep for a first meeting, huh?” he mumbled to himself. Wait, no, had he said that out loud? Dammit! If the bleeding head hadn’t tipped him off already, Ryuji was sure Akira definitely thought he was crazy now. “I, uh, I mean… shit… I-if you really don’t mind takin’ me… but, uh, yeah I think seein’ a doctor would probably be a good idea.”

Real smooth, Ryuji, he thought disdainfully. He tried to force a smile back at Akira, but he got the sense that he probably looked as pathetic as he sounded.

Ryuji stared his other self in the face, quietly analyzing it for any possible differences. Of course there were none. His gaze trailed to the floor and he let his mind wander for a moment, trying to reconcile the fact that he was likely very far from home. He’d tried over and over to explain how he had just been inside mementos, being chased by a particularly weird looking shadow before somehow stumbling into a parallel universe. And somehow it seemed too crazy for the version of himself that was sitting across the table to wrap his head around. Ryuji was sure his limited vocabulary had something to do with it. “Look, I know this is super weird for both of us. All I’m sayin’ is that would like to go home, back to my dimension or whatever. I don’t wanna stay here. No offense to you of course, you seem like a great guy!” Ryuji smiled to himself. At least he had his sense of humor.

Sorry sight was likely an understatement for the boy sitting in front of Akira, knees held up to his chest as he sat in the alley behind the train station. He’d only seen the boy by accident, happening to glance over and catch a shock of blond hair and a brightly colored shirt. About to dismiss the sight, he’d noticed the blood and decided making sure he was okay was more important than getting home exactly when he told Sojiro he’d be there. Instead he shot a text to let him know Akira could reheat his dinner before crossing the street to go ask what was going on. 

True to his word, Akira didn’t laugh when the stranger told him what happened, instead trying to figure out where the blood was coming from. “Did you hit your head when you fell? Those can be pretty nasty.” He kept his voice soft and level, it was probably strange enough to crouch down in front of someone he’d never met, let alone make anything akin to a scene. “How are you feeling? Woozy or sleepy at all?” 

Takemi could probably help- Akira could call in a favor, he was sure. But also it might not be the brightest idea to ask someone to follow him to a back alley doctor and not think they’re going to be kidnapped. “Oh- and what’s your name? I’m Akira.”

Ryuji had hit his head. All things considered, he was lucky not to have a concussion. His damn knee had been acting up again and it was just his luck that it would give out as he leapt up the station steps two at a time. But explaining the backstory to his injury felt like more trouble than it was worth, so he responded to the stranger’s questioning by saying, “Yeah I hit my head on the handrail. I must have tripped or something, but I actually feel pretty fine so it’s all good!” This stranger, who Ryuji could now call Akira, continued to look him up and down, obviously doubting that he was as fine as he claimed. Akira’s stare burned into his skin, making him shiver. In an attempt to deflect concern, he aggressively stuck his hand out for a handshake, at the same time proclaiming “The name’s Ryuji! I know these are kinda freaky circumstances, but it’s nice to meet ya!” He closed his eyes and flashed the biggest smile he could muster, hoping and praying that, despite the blood, he was able make at least a decent first impression. His mind wandered again to the sound of Akira’s voice, and part of him hoped that today wouldn’t be the last time he heard it.
