@saasusakuu
Oh my god the way sasusaku angst is depicted on the Naruto stage is truly something else
comic i drew last year but i still like it a lot. based on that scene from wfkbj (except the last few moments) which made me go, “this is so ss…” (though to be fair, i say that about a lot of things)
(also check out @pastelnoctis‘ fic inspired by this comic.)

A not too quick aside on Sakura now that I’ve finished Part I, but it amazes me how many times her completely valid concerns about Sasuke and his well-being during Preshippuden are kind of brushed off by the people around her. On numerous occasions, she correctly identifies that Sasuke is not only unstable, but also an active danger to himself, but every time she tries to talk to Kakashi, I can’t help but feel he’s intentionally trying to shelter her from what’s going on, resulting in interactions where it can come across as if he’s not really taking her seriously. I want to note that I specifically say 'come across' because he knows that Sakura's concerns are serious, though it's also obvious he very much views her as a child (which she is) and his protective nature towards his students leads to some... complicated things in regards to how he interacts with them due to the whole ninja fiasco.
A very noticeable instance comes directly after Naruto and Sasuke’s rooftop fight, where in seeing Sakura is noticeably shaken after seeing two of teammates nearly kill each other, Kakashi tells her everything will be alright. He specifically tells her in the Viz Media translation that “Everything will be as it is before.” And of course, Sakura is reassured by Kakashi, but considering she later brings up her issues with Naruto, it shows that she still has reservations that she didn’t feel comfortable expressing to her teacher, which makes sense. Naruto is Japanese fantasy society based on those very customs, and in a culture that heavily values age-based hierarchies, I imagine that Sakura probably wouldn’t question a trusted mentor figure to his face.
She attempts to talk to Sasuke into seeking help and telling the adults about the curse mark during the final leg of the exams, but he flat out refuses because it would mean resigning and having to put his personal goals on the backburner. She reaches out to Kakashi at least twice from what I remember, and both times seem to have done not much. She finally confides in Naruto, but he idolizes Sasuke so intently that he just doesn’t seem to believe it’s even possible for him to fall victim to the seductive nature of Orochimaru’s offer. It’s actually kind of amusing how Sakura seems to gradually begin growing out of her idyllic view of Sasuke before the reality of it all hits Naruto near the end of the Retrieval arc. She is aware of the fact that Sasuke could very well fall into Orochimaru’s clutches, and she took the signs he was putting out seriously enough to follow him on the night he left to the village gate. This is no doubt in part to the fact that Sakura has had moments alone with Sasuke where he reveals the more concerning parts of his personality; the awakening of his curse mark, for example, happened while Naruto was unconscious.
Honestly, I think her team was pretty lucky that she seemed to blame herself for not being able to stop Sasuke more than anything else. If I was in her position, I would’ve been livid at the idea that my concerns were completely correct and yet nobody around me seemed to agree until it was too late. At age thirteen, far less was enough to make me incoherent.
MAY YOU NEVER LOSE YOUR HYPERFIXATION
“I can fix him” okay but I can fix the narrative. I can recontextualize events and bring out depths of character. I can shift priorities and strengthen relationships and show that anyone can change with enough kindness and support, and that what you admired in him has been inside yourself this whole time.
I just saw a post that deeply annoyed me because it went, "Here's a story that's like a Regency romance, but I FIXED it by making the characters sexually liberated and shame-free and polyamorous!"
This is like saying, "Here's a story that's like a thriller, but I FIXED it by having the serial killer go to therapy instead of trapping victims in his evil maze and dismembering them."
.
The thing a lot of people don't seem to get is that the entire appeal of a Regency romance is watching a deeply repressed, perfectly controlled, buttoned up, straight-laced person who has never expressed an emotion before fall so hard for someone that something in them just breaks and they come completely unhinged.
It's a very specific kink that this genre is tapping into.
People who think the characters in a Regency novel are boring are missing the whole point. The characters are supposed to be boring, right up until they fall so madly in love that it drives them insane, at which point they become very interesting. Regency romance novelists are doing the writing equivalent of putting plain white featureless uncooked whole eggs in a microwave and waiting for them to explode.
Sasuke Cared.
meiyoukongju Off the top of my head, these are some examples of Sasuke showing he cared about Sakura, beginning with 3 of the most explicit examples. And I just wanna show that he cared, not that he was in love with her. Sorry that it’s rather long :P
- Sasuke cheering Sakura up by complimenting her genjutsu skills after noticing she was upset in chapter 36:
- Sasuke describing Sakura as someone “dear” to him in chapter 133:
This was reiterated in chapter 177, when Kakashi stated that they had both found “precious” companions, and Sasuke thinks of Sakura and Naruto:
- Sasuke sincerely thanking Sakura for everything she’s done for him in chapter 181 (bearing in mind she’s the only person he’s ever thanked in the whole series):
Here are several less explicit examples, but they definitely show that he cares for her more than he allows himself to admit:
- Stepping in harm’s way to shield Sakura from an attack in chapter 10:
- Sasuke waking up from slumber with the 1st thing on his mind being to get revenge on Sakura’s behalf because she’d been beaten up, and then breaking the guy’s arms, in chapters 55 and 56:
He looks pretty pissed doesn’t he? XD Also remember how this contrasts to Naruto, and how when he woke up, the first thing he thought of wasn’t why she was so beat up, but rather how Sakura’s hair had changed, and Sasuke wasn’t impressed:
- Sakura being the only female Sasuke is content with being in close physical contact with:
- Sasuke being unable to forget the close bonds he has with Sakura and team 7, no matter how hard he tries, in chapter 414:
- Sasuke smirking when Sakura went smashy smashy during the war, liking what he see’s and respecting her strength in chapter 632:
- Sasuke talking bullshit about only saving Sakura because she was close to Naruto, and the latter calling him out on his bullshit, by comparing it to Sasuke saving Naruto on the bridge, essentially saying Sasuke’s body moved on it’s own to save Sakura, and Sasuke having no answer to this, in chapter 680:
- Sasuke thanking Sakura once again for saving him in chapter 685:
- Sasuke’s leg shaking during Sakura’s confession, showing her words mean something to him, in chapter 693:
- Calling her annoying with the EXACT same pained, fake smile that Sakura showed Sai earlier on, further showing that he’s almost acting against his will:
- And Sasuke comparing Sakura’s love for him to the love he had for his family, showing that he considers her feelings to be very genuine, and not some fantasy of love that he had earlier bullshitted about:
And of course, the cause of all this hiding of emotions being the curse of his clan, explained in chapter 419:
This caused Sasuke to feel the need to shun the love Sakura offered him. It was inevitable; Sasuke’s cold demeanor and dark path were chosen for him the moment his clan was slaughtered by Itachi. Hagoromo acknowledged the tricky situation Sasuke was in when it came to love:
But Hagoromo was hopeful that Sasuke would be able to embrace love again after he was redeemed, “a love different from the one he had for his mother”, implying a romantic love:
And that’s what happened in 699 and the epilogue:
And thus concludes some of the ways in which Sasuke showed he cared about Sakura :)
Sakura Haruno from Naruto.
She is the only character in the entire show that has an "inner Sakura" who is way more outgoing and boisterous, and pushes Sakura to take chances and risks that she wouldn't ordinarily take on her own, including some key character development moments.
