Some Djembe soloing by the talented Ron Freeman. Yesterday I went to my first #bembe for a friend becoming an #iyawo and I was reminded that not all superheroes wear capes! Not all artists want to even be seen. I heard some of the best music I’ve heard in a while with percussion and singing. It was announced that nothing is to be documented and commercialized though. Mostly because it has a function in the culture that often loses a bit of its essence when it’s ‘for the gram’. This isn’t always the case but it’s something to be mindful of! More bounce in the ounce. More sauce than the boss!!!! Yesterday the two dvds I ordered from the amazing @moustapha5664 came in the mail and I’m super excited!!! My friend @empressme_1luv recommended it a while ago and I can see why! Being able to 1. Learn new dances and music. 2. Get the exercise 💪🏾and 3. Include some of these pieces into my repertoire. Why even bother spending your time doing ish that don’t make you happy? It’s not always going to be easy carving a life where your career is your passion especially in the arts but settling for what seems ‘safe’ but dull just isn’t the way for me!! . I was thinking today about the 7 years I’ve been in Albany which doesn’t even feel like it’s been THAT long especially when you factor in movement. A lot of people stay in the city they went to college for a few years so I know I’m Gucci. I do think about getting back to Africa and being more mobile in general which means mastering the day and being patient.
