I imagine their domain is like. A big pond. And youre swimming in it and it's not bad, relaxing even. It's kinda cold though, so you decide swim some laps. This toad sitting on the edge of the pond won't stop looking at you. It's fine it's just a dumb amphibian.

The pond starts to warm up and it's good, you had been getting a bit chilled despite the exercise. It's like a hot tub now and you doze. With your eyes closed you can even ignore the toad. At some point it gets a little uncomfortable and you decide it's time to get out, cool off there on the rocks. But the sides are super slippery. You make eye contact with the toad. It's just sitting there in its own little shallow pool of steaming water.

You scramble at the sides, because now you feel your skin begin to blister with the heat of the water. But all you achieve is scratching long lines in the vivid green moss that coats the rocks. "Help me" you say to the toad, and you get a mouthful of boiling water in return. But how can it? It's just a dumb amphibian, looking at you with passive malice.

You don't remember passing out. You don't think you did. You vaguely remember your flesh getting cooked and your stomach boiling and the smell hitting your nose. You remember the pain. You lie in the pond, grateful for the cool water. You decide to swim some laps.
