seeing the take that monty is nevermore’s jax killlssss me because whatttttt you mean the very clearly repressed queer man who was groomed by a religious extremist cult and made to believe that there was something inherently evil and wrong with him???? something so deeply instilled in him that the church is to this day his greatest fear?????? his cruelness being a product of succumbing to the conditioning of his mother + the church because if everyone thinks he’s evil anyway, he might as well fulfill that prophecy because it’s safest that way????? THATS the man ur comparing to jax?!?!?!?!?
And MOST IMPORTANTLY… the man who CONTINUOUSLY reaps the consequences of every cruel and shitty thing he does and is actively hated and never excused by any of the other characters???? (save for will lol) that man????? That’s your jax????? The fuckass rabbit???? I fear we have to accept that even if you actually hate monty with ur whole soul (fair enough) you CANNOT act like he isn’t an INTEGRAL character to the story, one of the leading antagonists (not to mention an amazing narrative parallel to lenore aka our main character) — obviously he’s gonna have a lot of screen time??? and he’s sooooo well written… so good at being bad. like that’s my dawgs
this is lighthearted btw it was mostly an excuse for me to talk about how much I like Monty’s writing! Pls don’t fight meanly I’ll cry but if u have counter points that’s great I love to chat
this is such an underrated moment of character study for monty. like he is CONSTANTLY afraid. the very notion of god HAUNTS him especially because he is DEAD and in the afterlife, he has NO clue what’s going on, and he is deeply afraid and perturbed by HIS OWN INNER DARKNESS. like every day he is afraid first and foremost of himself and whatever is inside of him that makes him evil and twisted and different and unworthy (shown by the way he literally embodies the satanic creature that crawls out his mouth in the nightmare; scratching and choking Will the same way the demon was scratching and choking the worshippers #fire symbolism btw). but at the same time the only internal model he has is to self-fulfil this prophecy that eats him from the inside out. if he is evil he is in control of the distance between him and the rest of the world. FIRE!! FIIIIRE!!!!!!! JAX COULD NEVER!!!!!!!!!!!!
