Saezuru Tori Chapter 64: The One Who Truly Changed

My thoughts on Chapter 64 before the new chapter

While many readers focused on Doumeki’s confession , feeling satisfied by it or frustrated with Yashiro’s response , Chapter 64 highlights something more significant:

Doumeki hasn’t changed. Yashiro has.

This becomes clear when comparing Doumeki’s actions in Chapter 24 and Chapter 64. In Chapter 24, he confessed out of fear, fear that Yashiro would leave him. The timing didn’t matter; what mattered was saying it before losing the chance.

Chapter 64 follows the same pattern. Faced with uncertainty , his position in the Sakura group and the unknown punishment from Tsunakawa , Doumeki confesses again because he believes this might be his last opportunity.

His feelings are sincere, but his behavior is consistent. He acts when he feels he might lose Yashiro.

Yashiro, however, does something different.

He stays.

That shift may seem small, but for Yashiro, it marks a clear break from his usual pattern. Yoneda-sensei emphasizes this through deliberate moments:

When Doumeki falls asleep, Yashiro doesn’t leave , even though leaving has always been his instinct when things become too personal.

When the conversation turns to the Madam, he stays.

When Doumeki begins to confess , the exact situation Yashiro typically avoids , he stays and listens, despite visible tension.

When Doumeki talks about the past four years, Yashiro doesn’t interrupt. He lets him finish.

When Doumeki blames himself for the injury, Yashiro shuts it down immediately. And even when Doumeki calls him gentle, kind, strong, and beautiful , words Yashiro has always rejected, he still doesn’t leave.

That is where the real change happens.

It isn’t dramatic. It isn’t loud. It’s controlled , which makes it far more meaningful in Yashiro’s case.

This tension is also reflected in “今まで散々、俺を…っ,” a line that suggests accumulated harm rather than a single incident. The phrasing carries weight , something ongoing and difficult to fully articulate , and the cut-off ending signals strain rather than anger.

The same complexity appears in Yashiro’s question:

“どんな気持ちで聴けって…” , “How am I supposed to hear that?”

This isn’t rejection.

It’s confusion.

Doumeki suddenly speaks with clarity and warmth , almost like his past self , after acting distant and even cruel since reuniting with Yashiro. The shift is abrupt. Yashiro isn’t pushing him away; he’s trying to process what’s happening.

If there’s frustration in this scene, it lies more in Doumeki’s timing. His decision to confess is understandable , he doesn’t want to leave things unsaid, but it places emotional weight on Yashiro at the exact moment Yashiro has chosen to stay.

And it happens while Yashiro is already under pressure, anxious about Doumeki’s safety and aware that he may soon have to confront Kai.

Yashiro’s question after the kiss “Why are you telling me this now?” captures that tension. It’s not rejection. It’s about timing.

At the same time, there’s another layer to this.

Doumeki is finally being honest, and that matters. But what he says also reveals a gap in understanding.

When Doumeki says he chose the yakuza life because he wanted to be with Yashiro, it directly contradicts what Yashiro tried to do for him. Yashiro pushed him away, forced that separation, and endured it so that Doumeki could leave that life and have something better.

For Doumeki to frame it this way suggests he still doesn’t fully understand the depth of Yashiro’s feelings.

And that matters, because if something were to happen to Doumeki now, Yashiro would be the one left carrying it.

He would blame himself.

So the question becomes unavoidable:

Did Doumeki really think saying that would make Yashiro happy?

Or was this simply the result of holding everything in for too long, reaching a point where he could no longer keep it contained?

That’s why the final panel feels so important.

Doumeki’s expression before turning away could be read as a quiet farewell. But the last panel shifts that interpretation. His expression changes, from sadness to determination.

It doesn’t feel like he’s leaving Yashiro.

It feels like he’s made a decision.

Possibly to end things with Tsunakawa, to resolve what remains before returning. For a long time, Doumeki held back because he wanted to stand on equal footing with Yashiro. But now, having understood more, especially the truth about Yashiro’s injury and the fact that he was never truly safe, it’s difficult to see him walking away.

At this point, what matters is whether Doumeki can prove he’s capable of standing by Yashiro’s side without putting himself in danger.

If this direction holds, it raises two concerns.

First, Yashiro is now positioned to confront Kai while Doumeki remains unaware. Kai already suspects Yashiro’s involvement with Tsunakawa, which places Yashiro at serious risk if he faces him alone.

Second, if Yashiro chooses to act against Misumi’s orders in order to protect Doumeki, that decision could create an even more dangerous situation for both of them.

Given what Doumeki now understands, not only the injury, but the extent to which Yashiro concealed things to protect him, it’s unlikely he would choose to leave him again.

Volume 10 may be building toward a major cliffhanger.

Ongoing Series - Thai

Beside the Sky: Fourever You 2 (Thai YT) ep 7 of 8 - OMG so good!!! i love this installment best of the 3 we have gotten so far. I may need to immediately rewatch this.

Let Me Into Your Heart (Weds YT) 8 of 10 - Aww this ep was sad. How dare this little pulp make me cry? i gotta say, I really like this show. its so earnest. It's not the same premise at all but the watching experience is reminding me of My Ride. That’s not a comparison I make lightly. I love it when characters are kind to each other but there is still tension and plot, it’s just not coming from interpersonal miscommunication it’s coming from outside pressure and external conflict. Also, the singing was fine - RED LETTER DAY.

(Also, I recognize that house!)

Cat for Cash (Thai Tues YouTube) ep 2 of 10 - I do like that in First we have an actor who does JBL-style thirst. I’m enjoying this show a lot, it’s sweet and touching, with a nice backbone of pathos. I’m not obsessed with it but frankly I kinda need a break from obsession right now. This is a good break show.

That said, not sure how they can carry this simple concept for a full run. This is one of those that would better suit a 6 ep JBL length.

This set must have been hard to manage. All those cats.

On a completely different note, the fact that a male orange cat is the “smart boss” is a deeply flawed miscast. Miscat?

Dare You to Death (Thai Netflix) ep 4-6 of 10 - Oh the visual and verbal puns are coming thick and fast with this show (see what I did there?). Such a 70s cop drama, just need more unbuttoned Hawaian shirts (where's Fighter when you need him?). It is definitely overkill and cringe but that's fine with me. The music is KILLING me, in the best possible way it's so bow-chicka-bow-bow. This show is camp af. Also hello linguistic negotiation my beloved. Filial obligation of care moment from band of brothers, cute. Hitting lots of classic BL tropes.

Duang With You (Thai Sun iQIYI) ep 1 of 12 - Oh I am over the moon that Por and TeeTee got their show, even if it's around singing. So far I'm enjoying this. It’s just plain fun. I really love the art teacher, he’s a great character and extremely witty. But... holy stalking, Batman.

Peach Lover (Thai Tues iQIYI) Ep 2 of 10 - This is a v chili pepper rich show but it is also about loneliness. I’m finding the juxtaposition intriguing but the acting a little, well, stiff. (So to speak.)

Burnout Syndrome (Weds iQIYI) ep 9 of 10 - I continue to basically hate watch this. But Dew is out-acting absolutely everybody in this show. Where the hell did this kid come from? Also, was that, in fact, an actual off-brand non-Off DewGun kiss? I mean, I know it’s his imagination but, I guess we finally got one from GMMTV.

Reloved (Sat iQIYI) ep 9 of 10 - These two are very sweet. And the actors are fun together. But it’s extremely jarring after the last episode and I'm just kinda lost with this show now.

Ongoing Series - Not Thai

Cosmetic Playlover 2 (Japan Fri Gaga) eps 3 of 10 - I say "aww cute boyfriends!" a lot with this show. So far they've been avoiding the classic miscommunication, breakup, and other issues endemic to season 2BLs. I remained cautiously optimistic.

Countdown to Yes (Japan Mon Gaga) eps 3 of 10 - They were such dorks and totally boyfriends in college.

It's airing but.....

Melody of Secrets (Fri YT) 10 eps - Dropped this at the start of ep 5. Just too much lying. Apparently it has gotten worse. Happy with my life choices. I dont want to hate everything ForceBook does but GMMTV is making that very hard for me.

Love Alert (Viu) 10 eps - the Bad Guy My Boss pair returns for player meets innocent (again). Not my jam, not my channel, not my pair.

I Am Your Tutor AKA Kateikyoshi no Kishi Knight desu. (Japan) 10 eps - Directed by Naho Kamimura (Our Dining Table) starring Sawamura Rei (Happy of the End) and Tanaka Koki (Sugar Dog Life) based on the manga by Hiromasa Okujima. I have been reliably informed that despite what MDL says the original manga is NOT BL. So I will yoink it from the weekly now.

Goddess Bless You From Death (Fri iQIYI) ep 13 end - the final episode was truly excellent.

Summary

To catch a serial murderer, a psychic temple kid teams up with a cop and they fall in love. This show is full of gruesome jump-scare horror combined with a serial killer suspense thriller plot. The gay romance components, while present and well executed, are secondary. (There are very few actual BL tropes in play, for example.) All of this puts it in the Manner of Death category of BL (if that's a category now). Unfortunately, horror is not something I enjoy. I found the show engaging despite this bias and I think that Pavel & Pooh we’re perfectly cast. A solid offering, especially if you like horror, I just don’t. 8/10

I'm genuinely looking forward to their next show, The Grim Lover, which seems even more conceptually intriguing and right in my personal wheelhouse (also, good title).

It ended but...

Delivering a Delicious Divorce AKA Oishii Rikon Todokemasu (Japan Weds TVer) 10 eps - I'm sourcing this nefariously and will binge when possible.

Me and Who (Fri WeTV) paused at ep 8 - I'm still traveling and WeTV is not worth in on mobile. My guess is this is a 7/10 show for me. Certainly no more than an 8.
