What makes a man lose his honour?

‎Imam Shafi’i (رَحِمَهُ ٱللَّٰهُ) was asked, “What makes a man lose his honour? He replied, ‘Talking too much, exposing people’s secrets and placing [hopes] and trust in every single person.’”

al-Shāfi’ī said:

A wise man wrote to another wise man 'O my brother you have been given knowledge, so do not tarnish your knowledge with the darkness of sins, lest you remain in darkness on the day the people of knowledge come forth with the light of their knowledge'

What makes a man lose his honour?

How strange is man, who persistently runs away from his Lord’s decree as if he can find anything better than it.

ألق حسن الظن على الخلق، وسوء الظن على نفسك، لتكون من الأول في سلامة، ومن الآخر على الزيادة

Hold positive thoughts about others, and negative thoughts about yourself.

Being from the former provides safety (to one's heart), and being from the latter adds more to that (safety).

سَعَةُ الدُّنيا تضيق بهمٍّ صغيرٍ، فلا تستجلبوا الهموم لقلوبكم، وخففوا عن أنفسكم أثقالها، وافتحوا أبواب الفرح عليكم، ونقِّلوها بين المشروع والمباح.

The vastness of the Dunyaa can be made to feel constrictive by a minor worry.

So do not seek worries for your hearts, lessen the burdens on your souls, and allow yourselves to be happy.

Let your souls alternate between what is prescribed by Allaah and what is permissible.

1. Knowledge or ignorance

2. Righteous actions or evil

It was stated: If you do not busy the soul with the truth, then it will busy you with falsehood.

Ibn al-Qayyim رحمه الله said:

"Be pleased with everything that Allah does with you. For indeed He does not prevent you except to give you. He does not test you except to protect and save you. He does not give you ill health except to cure you. He does not give you death except to give life to you.

So beware of not being pleased with Him even for the blink of an eye. Such that you fall in His eye."
