The voice caused the both of you to stop, and you glanced at your best friend. You knew why Potter had such a big crush on her, who wouldn’t? With the prettiest eyes you had ever seen and flowing hair that looked like an angels, Lily Evans was beautiful. But you? You thought you looked like dust compared to her, who could even compare to her beauty? Certainly not her third wing, her best friend, her closest confidant. You both turned around and she rolled her eyes, but you took note to how she held her books to her chest a little bit tighter, and how her pale cheeks darkened in color momentarily.
“Halloween dance is coming up. You wanna go with me?” He asked with a cocky smirk, leaning agaisnt a nearby tree and biting down on his lip. You couldn’t help but roll your eyes. “What, (l/n)? Got a problem?” James snarked back to you.
“As a matter of fact I do.” You sassed, putting a hand on your hip bitterly.
“Day it to my face, what’s your problem?”James stepped towards you, glaring at you.
“Okay, that’s enough of this. James I’ll go with you if you just stop talking to (f/n) like that, now leave us alone, we have divination!” Lily tugged you away, sighing softly and giving you a little smile.
“So you’re actually gonna go with that dim witted bully? Jesus Lily, why did you swoop down that low?” You spat, angry and hurt that she’d go with such a jerk like James Potter. Who strutted around with his head held high and his nose stuck in the air like some French Aristocrat. You hated him. Rolling your eyes, you took your seat in the hot room and huffed out.
But all your worries became swept away when you saw him step in, with his hair untidy and his skin pale as snow, he sat at a table in the corner on one of the cushions, looking around curiously. Your eyes landed on his and you grinned, giving him a wave. Severus Snape shot you the hint of a smile before looking back down and letting his hair cover his face. “Why are you looking at him?” Lily groaned, tugging your shoulder. Secretly, if Lily could go out with the man who constantly made your life a living hell, then you could go with the guy who accidentally called her a bad name in the middle of a fit of emotions, once. And, on top of that, he’s been trying to apologize for ages and ages. You felt bad for Severus Snape, really bad. He never had the life you or Lily had. But either way, Lily always got what she wanted. Good grades, the gorgeous smile, hot guys fawning over her- and you always had to work hard to get what you desired. It wasn’t fair at all.
So the two of you sat through Divination boredly, you scribbling some words across your empty notebook pages as Lily furiously took notes, constantly asking the professor to repeat herself so she could get word for word the ideas and philosophy behind the stupid class. When class ended you got up, pushing your way out of the crowded line and towards the door frame. “Sorry.” You replied as you smacked your face into someone’s chest.
“No worries.” He murmured, and that familiar voice sent chills down your back.
“Oh, Severus. Hi.” You smiled up at him, sticking by his side.
“Oh, (F/n). Hi.” He mocked your tone and you smiled, seeing his lips turning up into the hint of a grin.
“Do you wanna, maybe like, hang out with me in the courtyard?” You gained the courage up to ask him, smiling softly and letting out a little sigh of content when he nodded. “Great. Let’s go.” You gently grabbed his wrist, pulling him down with you and looking around the chilly autumn fields, the leaves of trees gently falling and the grass becoming dewy with morning air. You loved this feeling so much more than anybody could ever possibly know.
“Divination, do you like it or not?” Severus asked you as you sat down beside him on a bench.
“Oh, god no. It’s disgusting. A pitiful form of art and a horrid waste of my time. What about you?”
“Same, I hate it. Potions is more my style.”
“I’ve noticed. You’re very gifted, Sev.” You whispered, smiling at him when he went to look at you.
“You really think so?” He asked, nudging his shoulder against yours.
“I know so.” You smiled, nudging his back in turn.
“Snape!” A bellowing voice called, and you both snapped your heads in the direction of the voice. James Potter and his little crew of bullies were marching towards you, wands ready in their hands.
“Oh god, not again.” Severus groaned, looking down with a soft huff. You stood up with him, standing your ground.
“My, my. What a surprise! Lily Evans best friend, hanging out with the man who belittled her.” James tsked, shaking his head slowly. “What a pathetic best friend.”
“Oh, as if you don’t do that ever day, Potter.” You shot back, fire dripping from your words.
“Leave her alone, James.” Severus begged, giving him an angry look. His dark eyes narrowed and his lips tightened as the other boy inspected him, looking him up and down.
“You’re disgusting, really. A boorish, dim witted son of a bitch with greasy hair and a knack for the dark arts. Bet you’ll end up becoming a Death Eater one of these days, huh? Can’t find anyone here that likes you, so you move on to the next group. And after that the next, and the next-“
“Enough!” You shouted, drawing your wand and pointing it at the group of cackling boys. “How dare you torment him like this? He minds his own business and you all come along to ruin it. Leave him be, or else!”
“Or else what, (l/n)? What are you gonna do? Hex us?” James raised an eyebrow, taking a step towards you.
“Maybe I will.” You snarled, watching as James presses the tip of his wand to your chin.
“Expelliarmus!” Severus cried out, James wand being knocked out of his hands. Snape rushed towards you, sighing. “Are you okay?” He asked softly.
“Yeah, I’m fine. Are you alright?” You whispered, looking at him closely.
“Don’t worry about me, I’m used to it-“
“How cute.” Sirius stepped up and gave you both a false look of adoration. “Young love, what a feeble thing.”
Before you could even snap back at him, you heard Potter cry out a spell. “Expulsio!” It flew right past Severus, blasting you agaisnt a tree as you let out a soft huff. “It was for Severus! I didn’t mean to-I didn’t mean to-“
“Let’s get out of here! Before McGonogal sees!” Remus begged, and through narrowed eyes and soft breaths you heard them running away, Pettigrew slithering behind.
“Oh my god,” Severus ran towards you, kneeling beside you and pressing his arm behind your back. “Are you play? Can you hear me?” He asked softly, and you looked up slowly as he propped you up on your back.
“I can.” You whispered, giving him a little smile. “Not like it was an unforgivable curse, it just startled me that’s all.” With a feeble smile, you pressed a gentle kiss to his cheek.
“This is my fault, I shouldn’t have-“ You heard the terror punctuating at his every word, and you knew why. Severus Snape thought he had a knack for ruining things and hurting people that got too close to him. But he didn’t, and you didn’t believe it either.
“Hush, hush. No it isn’t. It’s just James Potter being, well, James Potter. That’s all. You helped me out more than once today, I promise.” You smiled up at him and he gave you a grin, nodding along with what you were saying.
“Come on, let’s get you to Madame Pomfrey.” He helped you stand up, walking as slow as you needed before helping you into a hospital bed.
“Where is she?” Lily rushed in, seeing you laying down with Severus crouching above you. “No doubt you’d do her harm.” She whispered with a frown.
“Sev didn’t do anything, Lily. Okay? And I don’t appreciate you doing every little thing you possibly can to make him look like he’s a horrible person, because he isn’t. He’s kind and loving, and I’ve grown to adore that about him.” You gave him a little smile, turning your head and seeing Lily standing with a blank expression stretched over her face. “And if you have a problem with it, I dunno what to tell you. I’m sorry Lily.”
“Are you telling me you’ve grown to care for him? For the boy who-“
“Yes. I have grown to care for the boy who made one mistake. The boy you’ve refused to forgive because he messed up once. Unlike Potter out there who-“
“Yeah well I‘ve falling in love with Potter!” Lily defended. “He isn’t that bad when you get to know him.”
“And I’ve fallen in love with Snape. He isn’t that mean when you get to know him.” You countered, watching as she frowned, her eyes meeting yours bitterly before she walked off. “She’s so unforgiving sometimes.” You whispered, looking at the boy who sat beside you.
“Is what you said true?” Severus asked softly, smiling just a bit. You nodded, leaning closer to him and resting your forehead against his.
“It is. I’ve loved you since fourth year.” You mumbled, giving him a big grin.
“Why didn’t you tell me sooner?” He asked, his thumbs brushing across your cheeks.
“I have a tendency to ruin things. And I didn’t want to ruin us.” You frowned, looking down with a soft sigh.
“I don’t want to ruin us, either. Now that I finally have you…” He trailed off, his hands gently resting on your sides.
“I promise I’ll stick by you, okay? No matter what. And don’t listen to Potter, he’s just angry he isn’t as smart or handsome as you. And don’t listen to what he said, about you becoming a Death Eater, he just doesn’t know any good insults.” You smiled, your noses brushing together.
“And don’t listen to him, either, I know what he’s told you before. About, you know…the way you look. I think you’re beautiful.” Severus grinned, and his smile grew when he saw your dark pink blush.
“Yeah? Well I think you’re beautiful too.”
“Me? Beautiful? I’m the shadows of the night, I am darkness. I can’t be beautiful!” Severus joked, smiling widely at how your face lit up when you burst into laughter, your head tilting back happily. That’s what he desired to do every day. To just make you laugh like that.
Comfortable silence folded around the two of you, and he looked at you happily. “Can you kiss me, Severus Snape?” You finally asked, biting your lip and turning to him.
His mouth tugged upwards with a smile as he leaned forward, his lips pressing to yours. Fireworks exploded around you, happiness coursing it’s way through your body as he held you close to his chest tightly. Even after the two of you pulled away from the kiss he still held you tightly, your face burying against his shoulder. And you knew you would be content for the rest of your life, with you in his arms.
