Florida school bans Ruby Bridges movie after one parent complains
A Florida elementary school removed a Disney movie about Ruby Bridges after a parent complained about scenes of white people threatening the Black girl as she entered school.
Emily Conklin, development director for the YMCA of Greater St. Petersburg, filed a formal challenge dated March 6 complaining that the film about a 6-year-old who integrated New Orleans schools in the 1960s was not appropriate for second graders because, she wrote, students might learn that white people hate Black people, and the Pinellas County School Board pulled it from the curriculum, reported the Tampa Bay Times.
âThink about it: A 6-year-old girl (Ruby Bridges) can go to school every day with armed guards, but second graders canât learn about it?â said Ric Davis, president of Concerned Organization for Quality Education for Black Students. âIt doesnât make any sense.â
The 1998 film had been part of Black History Month lessons for years without controversy, but parents across the state have been challenging materials that depict or explore racism and LGBTQ issues with the encouragement of Gov. Ron DeSantis and Republican legislators.

This is not about being arrested!
This is about, the officer asks you, âWhen you were at school on Friday, did you see anything unusual?â
This is about, the police knock on your door and say âweâve heard reports of problems in the neighborhood; do you know anything about them?â
This is about, the police show you someoneâs photo and say, âhave you seen this person?â
This is about, the police say âyouâre not under arrest; we just want to ask some questions. Tell me about your normal workday.â
All the advice applies DOUBLE if youâre under arrest. In that case, say NOTHING without talking to your lawyer.
But this advice is for âyou havenât been arrested and the police are just asking for âhelpâ and theyâre fishing for info.â
Donât give them info. You donât remember the details. Youâre not sure what happened. You donât think you know that guy but maybe he looks familiar but you donât know for sure; thereâs a lot of people around here that look familiar. You didnât notice. You donât think you were there but you arenât certain. You werenât paying attention and you just want to get on with your day; can I go now officer?
And thatâs if you feel like you have to answer them at all. If theyâre not specifically asking you, donât volunteer anything. ANYTHING. Not even to correct someone else who is botching whatever theyâre saying.
There is NOTHING the police can offer you that makes it worth talking to them. They can promise you immunity from prosecution⊠but they wonât promise the same to your family or your friends. And they are very, very good at sounding like theyâre promising something when theyâre not. And they are legally allowed to lie to you: They can also say, âyour friend told me you were in the roomâ when they didnât, when they havenât even talked to your friends.
Repeat: They are allowed to lie to you. But you lying to them is a crime. So donât lie. Just dodge: Youâre not sure, you donât remember, you havenât noticed. You canât be certain, and you wouldnât want to mislead them, so youâre very sorry but you canât answer.
If youâre in a situation where you need to make a deal with a cop⊠get it in writing and signed by a judge or itâs vaporware.
But mostly: Donât talk to cops. About anything. Ever.

People on the internet treat autism like it's some cute, childish thing, but like, autism and the trauma that comes with it have literally lead me to severe alcoholism, anger issues and a criminal record.
This post goes out to autistic addicts and autistic people who have personality disorders and autistic people who have hurt people during meltdowns and autistic people who have been in trouble with the law and autistic people who have been diagnosed with every mental illness under the sun only to find out it was autism all along.
You are loved. Your trauma and your reactions to it do not make you a bad person.

Lost followers after reblogging that whole thing about JKR being radicalized over the years, and that disturbs me.
Like if you think saying that people can be radicalized and manipulated into hate is somehow justifying it, yikes. And if you think that people are somehow just good or evil and that you are not at risk of buying into propaganda, have I got some very red flag news about that!
Idk if its because I am an older Millennial maybe (most who unfollowed were younger) but I watched a ton of that generation slide from one of the most progressive to the far right before my every eyes. Hell, my dad fought alongside his black friends in the Detroit race riots and now he watches Fox News 24/7 and talks about the border wall. Yet still claims he could never be racist because of how he used to be. He doesnât even realize what he has become.
JKR isnât a deluded old woman or innately evil, but in fact THE prime example of how well-meaning ignorance and privilege can be weaponized and encouraged down a pipeline, until it turns into a force of hate, and should be a cautionary tale about why educating and being open about these issues are necessary. Because there are those out there who will use those divisions and ignorance to their own ends. And just digging in our heels and saying âthat could never be me!â is the very thing that puts you more at risk. Iâve lost so many loved ones down that pipeline and it is more slippery than most realize.
Stay alert, stay compassionate, stay humble, and make sure you move through life guided by reason rather than reaction. I love yâall and donât want to see your passion twisted to get used against the world.
Thinking "I could never be a bigot" is the first prerequisite for becoming a bigot.
In the UK we've seen a few people ride this crazy train to the end of the line in the last few years. Perhaps because our political landscape is different from that of the US, it's easier to see it happening. There has never been an expectation here that being a conservative means you will hold insane views. It might mean you have some objectionable political ideologies, but you are still expected to be a somewhat normal human being who occupies the same planet as the rest of us.
So when we see somebody make the transition from being just a bit right-wing in their thinking, to being a full-on conspiracy lunatic, it really shows. We've seen it with a lot of our politicians and other public figures.
There's a guy called Neil Oliver who used to present historical TV. His views were always a bit weird and biased (historians and archaeologists did not like him at all), but he wasn't an actual crazy person. But he rode that crazy train to the end of the line and became a fully-fledged antivaxx COVID denier, who is now babbling about one world government and peddling antisemitic conspiracy theories. It happens.
JK Rowling's radicalisation has really disturbed people, because she was famous for books which championed ideas of equality and rights for marginalised groups. In retrospect, those books had some biases and prejudices in them as well, but they were ones that most white Britons carry without realising it. So the seemingly sudden change from that to being someone spreading hatred of trans people and seeming to consciously back antisemitic ideas was a massive whiplash. A real shock. Even more of a shock than the fact she seems to have forgotten how to write a readable book.
Now, I'm a pro-independence Scot who was active on Twitter in the years after 2014. So I already knew she was disingenuous, a bit of a troll, and had some fairly reactionary views. Perhaps her further radicalisation was less of a shock for me. But it still took me aback.
This happens. It happens to people who are too secure in their own self-concept as a Good And Progressive Person. They feel that because they are a Good And Progressive Person, all their thoughts and feelings and biases must also be Good And Progressive, because Good People don't have Bad Thoughts, and of course, Bad People never have Good Thoughts.
By painting JK Rowling as having always been a secretly Bad Person, and Harry Potter as having always been secretly propaganda for Bad Thoughts, we make ourselves vulnerable to the same kind of radicalisation. The truth is that she is just a person, a white cis woman with some unexamined biases, who wrote a series of books that were good-hearted and had good messages, and also reflected some of those biases. And now she has taken a ride on the crazy train, and it's scary to see.
Because it could happen to any of us.
Its obvious to me when people who post about canaries in mines have never met a canary. Like yeah the miners had a special device to revive the canary because canaries are one of the most adorable creatures on the planet and they make adorable little chirping sounds and honestly probably loved the sounds of machinery and people talking so it was probably loud and friendly with the workers. Whatever though maybe meet a canary sometime and youd understand
If you see this animal every day at work, and it sings to you during your hardest bouts of labor, you will be distraught if it dies. Even if you know this creature is meant to die in lieu of you, you still hear it when the labor is at its hardest and your muscles are struggling against the weight of your work. It is so small, smaller than your soot-stained hands and louder than the death that follows you. You dont want it to die. The same as a woman does not want her candle to run out ; she knows that is the point, its flame is meant to burn the wick and melt the wax ; but she is not indifferent to its wasting away. She may even save her favorite candle as not to burn it too quickly. Now imagine you are that woman, and there is a way to rebuild your favorite candle that you love the smell of and the way it flickers. Would she rather throw her candle out? Or would she rebuild it? That is a canary to these miners. Would you allow an animal to just die when it has been singing for you? It reminds you that it is alive, and you are too. Its stop of song signifies the lethal danger you are in. Why abandon it? Is the miners' love for a little bird really that surprising?
Why does this read as though written by a coal miner of the era in which a canary was needed.

The âgoodâ news is that:
because these are elected positions, Tennessee law states that temporary replacements for expelled members can be APPOINTED
appointed by whom?
the same districts that elected them!
which means if their home districts act quickly, these guys can be back at their desks as soon as next week!
and while that appointment is âtemporaryâ, the temporary status lasts only until the next special election
and there is nothing in Tennessee law that forbids an expelled member from running again in special elections
so basicallyâŠ
these GOP assholes only succeeded in elevating their fascist antics to national attention, made Jones & Pearson into rockstars, and galvanized Democratic opposition. Voters (especially Independents) are gonna remember this, especially since Democrats wonât let them forget!
