you, on a nat one, feel the certainty deep within your heart, as you have for as long as you remember — you don't know the difference between letting go and forgetting. "and i don't want to forget." who knows what letting go is? but forgetting would be an injury and an insult. forgetting is death. while something is remembered, it is still here. there is something within you that feels as protective of these memories, like a dragon and its golden hoard. there is something here that is more precious than anything in the world. it's those names written on those columns, it's the memories of what you had, and if you have to stay in pain to honor them, then so be it.

This is something very important to me. If any of you live in Wisconsin, please contact your representatives and tell them to oppose opening a Sandhill crane hunting season. There will be a senate hearing on the issue on November 19th, and I encourage you to attend if you can.
This post from the International Crane Foundation has a lot of information on why opening a hunting season on cranes would be detrimental, as well as information on how to find and contact your representatives.
The main reason they want to open a hunting season is because of claims of crane-caused damage on crops. There is no evidence that a hunting season will reduce these damages, but there are plenty of ways to deter cranes from crops without killing them.
We are still in a bad place with Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI). Thousands of Sandhill cranes have died this year in the US, with up to 2%-3% of the Eastern population lost.
We've saved Sandhill cranes from the brink of extinction. We don't want to undo that work.
@todaysbird would you mind sharing this?
Of course…I had no idea this was even being proposed. I’d love to see the state take real steps to help farmers instead of encouraging needless killing of these cranes, which is ineffective anyway.
I love the idea of dead gods. Not in the sense of “hey i killed something supernaturally strong” but in the sense of “i killed it and it’s still a god.” It is still worshipped. prayers are still answered. miracles are performed in its name, even as it lies pierced by a thousand swords and burning with chemical fire. even as it drifts through vacuum, decapitated and bleeding molten rock. in cosmic spite of being shot through each eye and hurled into a plasma reactor, it still radiates the power of the divine in a way that primitive death cannot smother. the nature of godchild is not so simple as to be tied to the mortality, or immortality, of any living being.
In science that's called a whalefall :)

The last time I managed to film a cattle egret neck swaying, my camera frustratingly cut out right before the actual strike. I am finally making it up to y’all with this highly satisfying wiggle and execution!
As mentioned last time, this neck swaying (also called head swaying) behavior is believed to give a bird parallax so they can strike at a prey item more accurately. As you can see from this egret snatching an unsuspecting bug- sometimes the silly wiggle pays off! Read more about neck swaying and similar bird behaviors here.

Well, I finished Monoco too! And decided to tweak the pictures here and there to make them fit the series better and post them all together. They still look same-same, but different though haha.
I guess Esquie should have been here too, but I'd like to draw something more story-driven now. Maybe someday later...

The creator of the lesbian flag, Emily Gwen, is currently unhoused and struggling financially while suffering to chronic and mental illness.
I have already contributed to her Kofi, and now I ask you to help, especially if you have ever used the lesbian flag. Even if you can't donate, I urge you to share her Kofi around to reach more audiences

It’s a shame how much nautical stuff is focused on the royal navy, especially the ships. Enough about the battleships. Here’s some beautiful boats from other cultures.
(Left) This is a traditional Somali ship known as a beden. Traditionally, the planks are sewn together with coconut fiber instead of hammered with nails. Did you know ancient Somalia had a maritime empire?
(Right) Galway hooker, from Galway Ireland. The original cloth sails were treated with a solution made from treebark to protect them from rot, which just so happened to turn the sails their iconic rusty red color, and modern synthetic sailcloth is dyed to imitate this.
(Left) Viking boats (amongst others) were built with the planks overlapping (clinker) instead of being flush (carvel) this provides flexibility for the boat to bend instead of break in rough seas but still maintains strength.
(Right) a Māori waka taua (decorated war canoe). This particular one is Ngā Toki, and it previously held the world record for longest canoe at 123 feet long and 6 1/2 wide).
Four more that I know less about:
(Left) Haida dugout canoe.
(Right) Vietnamese Ghe Nang.
(Left) An Unangax baidarka.
(Right) An Uros reed boat.
