There is a group of people that are formed from the strongly held wishes of the dead in a manner that makes them half ghost and half someone completely new.

They can live for centuries and their memories and identity are intrinsically tied to the physical integrity of their bodies. Injury and degradation from age literally erode their sense of self until they fall apart. And yet, their society has a fucked up class system where the most damaged among them are looked down on, and isolated, and denied the resources to recover from their injuries.

Oh, and they also just happen to be sentient, floating, burlap sacks with silly names.
