Another thing thatâs cool about fanfiction: itâs as long as it needs to be.
Well, sometimes itâs longer than anything on Godâs green earth needs to be, but my point is that thereâs really no rules about fic length. In traditional publishing thereâs this awkward middle where nobody wants to print a novella thatâs too long for a short story collection but doesnât really fill out a book. Ebooks have changed that somewhat but itâs still a convention that a book is about 75,000 words.
Fanfic is not bound by this standard. If your story takes 25,000 words to tell, then you can do that, and there are readers for whom thatâs a sweet spot. If you just want to keep going and going for 350,000 words and beyond, nobodyâs going to say âonly famous authors with grand ideas get to do thatââtext is low bandwidth and there are readers who will love the feeling that your story is a home where theyâre invited to stay as long as they like.
Sometimes restrictions breed creativity, and some writers need to be forced to edit themselves. But some writers know exactly what theyâre doing when they make a story a certain length, and itâs awesome that the Internet has created spaces that put no limits on that.

Do go on. Tell me how stuff works.
Eva Longoria is everything
Yet she canât even speak Spanish đđ đđ đ
Thatâs pride alright lmfao
She donât have to, but donât talk all that shit if you donât even learn your own culture #lame
you were saying @dabeatnik???
ummm
âWhen I was growing up, my parents spoke to each other in Spanish, but they didnât speak to us in Spanish because they were told not to. In school we werenât allowed to speak it.â
and also???
â⊠But America is the only country that promotes monolingualism. Here itâs English, English, English. Every other country makes their children learn a second language very early on. So as my political and social activism grew, I was like, âI really need to learn Spanish.â So I did.âÂ
idk how many people iâve known growing up in texas whose parents speak fluent spanish but they donât speak a lick solely because their parents were afraid or told not to teach their children. itâs unspeakably common and doesnât in any way shape or form diminish someoneâs claim to or pride in their heritage.Â
fuck that guy. you go eva.Â
lack of intergenerational language exchange is one of the leading causes of language death for endangered and indigenous languages because of this culture of shame attached to âlesserâ coded languages so frankly if yr mocking people for not speaking their mother tongue without taking the colonial reasons for this into account, youâre an ignorant prick and you can go fuck yourself like
I have 2 moods when writing.
Write 10 pages in one go, holy shit, my hands wonât stop moving, Imma get this fic done in like 2 hours WUT
I forgot how to English, oh god, write one sentence, watch 3 movies, write another sentence, the ideas are there but they just wonât come out how the frick do I end this, this Word Document has been open for over a week WELP
This deleted scene will forever haunt me until I can get my greedy hands on it ><
Stumbeled upon a nice reference picture and felt inspired to draw Cadet Hux â€
How do you maintain an interest in your story when it gets hard? I'm always losing interest ib my stories after a while and don't know how to get back on the horse!
In most cases, I recommend:
Remembering why you wanted to write this story in the first place
Fantasizing about how people might happily regard it/its themes/its characters
Remembering where itâs supposed to go (if you have some sort of scene/event/relationship you planned for that has yet to come about)
Discussing the story with someone who listens eagerly and is supportive
Reminding yourself that itâs absolutely normal to lose interest from time to time; usually it means youâre in a tough spot creatively or with the story in general, and thatâs alright.
Reminding yourself itâs okay to set things aside for a while, or to abandon a project altogether if you simply just donât like it enough anymore. This happens plenty! Not all stories are great ideas, and not all ideas stand the test of time. I have many stories and ideas Iâve scrapped over the years because theyâre just not interesting to who I am today.
Well this sure got many more notes than I expected!
