I think one of my favorite stories I’ve ever heard Mark Hamill tell is the one about how the first time he heard the score for A New Hope he got sort of jokingly offended because it seemed like every other character had a specific song for them and he didn’t and John Williams just looked at him and said “…The main theme is your song” and Mark was like “WHAT OMG” like he didn’t actually understand before that moment that he was the protagonist.

Demonic, red-eyed hoards of insects that rise from the ground en masse to shed their skins all over tree trunks and SCREAM NON-STOP ALL DAY UNTIL IT BECOMES A KIND OF WHITE NOISE THAT YOU DON’T EVEN REALLY HEAR ANY MORE.

During the rise of the 17-year cicadas in 2013, there were cicada corpses in piles on the ground. There were heaps of them like leaf piles in autumn. Everything smelled like rot. You couldn’t see the tree trunks anymore because there were so many cicadas stuck to them. People with trees that were younger than 17 years old were envied because their lawns were relatively clean. When you walked down the street you’d step on at least 5. My brother shot one down with a rubber band. I hit two in midair with one thrown flip-flop. We burned them with blowtorches when we got bored. One landed in my hair while I was walking home. Another ended up in a girl’s macaroni while she was sitting outside for lunch. A kid ate one raw for 50 bucks. It was the most savage time of my life. That spring…I definitely outscreamed the cicadas.
