wait, when did will and deanna start dating again? I know they'll break up again before they get married. bc deanna even dates worf for a bit on ds9. I swear tng has the messiest relationships in the franchise.
apart from that, this episode reminded me of so many from voyager for some reason (I know tng was first, but voyager is my og reference point) and it didn't particularly stand out to me. I just had to get this out there.
I think this season was very classic season 1 shameless without being repetitive and minus a grander story arc like jimmy/steve was. and they had budget this season! jonas brothers, belinda carlisle, arctic monkeys (I think), gaga and ariana - before they only had random 2010s indie music not available on all streaming platforms (I know this bc I liked one and could only find it on spotify and youtube). must be all that fruit loops money! and jameson? whiskey. I swear these two were in every shot.
mickey and terry's arc was actually surprisingly wholesome. and I was really shocked at his end?? at least frank got a proper sendoff. although I didn't expect him to die just like that. terry's little nazi/racist origin story was interesting. and ian's reactions to mickey getting nostalgic for his childhood with terry was hilarious. and wow, sandy washed her hair when she and debbie were on a break and she was with the milkoviches. maybe to assert herself from them.
and kev and vee <3 I obviously love ian and mickey, but they they have the most consistent relationship of the show. and I feel bad for saying this, but once ian and mickey's angst was gone, they weren't half as interesting. but of course still sweet! they actually have a surprisingly healthy marriage.
I've actually started to really like tami. I couldn't stand her at the beginning but she seems to be one of the few in this show who really had a character development. and don't get me wrong, I like how frank has been consistent since season 1, but it's nice to see someone really change and become a better person throughout the seasons. and I generally like when we get more background story from characters.
episode 10 felt so different from all the episodes before, like from the camera to the plot and everything. at first I thought maybe they had to take a longer break from filming bc of covid, but it almost seems like they had to replace the whole crew. maybe a covid thing too? maybe I'm just imagining it though. I remember the monica grave digging episode a few seasons ago was also a little unusual (one of my all time favorite though).
I did feel like some of the storylines got lost along the way. like did they forget that lip banged his professor when he judged tami for doing the same (esp her being a minor)? or that mickey already is a dad and ian was actually really close with yevgeny? he even kidnapped him to go to a road trip when he was in mania…
but it's always so weird when I watch clips of shows before I watch the show properly. like I could swear I saw ian and mickey in their own house with a baby. high chance this was their apartment and the baby yevgeny from an earlier season. but I often disappoint myself a little when I do this. although ian and mickey's story was a larger part in the show and started earlier than I initially expected. so at least I got what I came for!
I like how carl, of all people, is the only one actually making the neighborhood a better place in the end (I mean vee tried too). frank says a similar thing about carl in the episode where he gives a quick recap of all of his children. I really liked that scene bc it was both really funny and really nostalgic. the season 1 flashbacks were crazy, I don't remember them being this young!
I overall really liked the show, but with most comedies, after so many seasons you kind of know the drill. I think they did very well with this season bc they really created an ending point and kind of a full circle moment.
but there were definitely parts of the show were I was just very confused and wondered what the creators were on when they developed it (think karen's storyline). anyway, still a one of a kind dramedy show. reminds me of oitnb, I still need to finish that one. I once planned that I would do that before starting shameless lol.
picard and beverly were already quite close and comfortable with each other in this episode (smiles, touches, first names), but during the mind meld they had especially tender moments. and I liked that she was the only one he involved. I mean I know it was also bc she is the cmo, but he could've gotten riker, worf or a random security officer in to stop him from attacking things and people. but he knew she would soothe him enough :')
other than that I thought the acting was a bit weird in this episode. and the plot was a bit all over the place as well, but I'll let that slide bc we haven't had a good picard/beverly episode in a while.
oh, I thought this was the end of gillian. how is she still allowed to go to a hearing? but she is right for speaking up for herself.
ok, I'm really not on richard's side on this one. why should gillian go to jail for a crime she didn't commit (a crime that nucky committed btw), just so he and julia could have tommy? she's literally a wreck and they're still kicking her when she's down.
I'm sorry, what's willie's problem? his dad risked everything to keep him out of jail for some dumb jealously accident and almost got shot by his own brother and he's what? ashamed? eli is not the brightest bulb, but he would do anything for his family. willie just wants to be cool like nucky, when his father, day and day again shows him that other things are much more important.
oh my god, I can't tell you how glad I am that eli is alive and tolliver is dead. my moral compass is gone at this point. but eli should've really just come to nucky right away.
when and by who was richard shot? I'm very confused. yeah no, that was a weird ending scene for richard. I'll stick to my fabulous fanfic au. (it's called "'neath the old apple tree" on ao3, in case anyone's interested)
ok so a.r. is not dead. I read that the real one died in 1928 and season 5 takes place in 1931, make sense. apparently they wanted to make a lot more seasons but it got too expensive. season 5 also only has 8 episodes :( no mayer and lucky spinoff needed, I just want those 3 missing years! also no goodbye scene for a.r., he was just margaret's landlord in the last shot, how random lol.
should've taken my 2 year watching break after season 4, not 3… Idk that was a bit of an unsatisfying ending, a lot of loose ties. I mean I know there is one more season, but considering how much later it takes place, I feel like we just won't get certain answers. or maybe we will idk. I just hope eli gets back to his family, once again.
I think I'll watch season 5 of peaky blinders first/next bc that takes place in 1929 and according to my tracker, I haven't watched that show in almost 5 years!
honestly at this point I have a hard time understanding why gillian shouldn't have tommy. I get that julia and richard care for him, but no more than her. I thought this season was going to be about how she is addicted to heroin and manages to hide it, but still wants to get tommy, which of course would be horrible. but she has been clean for a while now and she's actually trying to make a suitable living situation for the both of them, not to forget roy (although I fear he is actually still with his wife and is lying to gillian).
and what terrible thing has he done to tommy except making him live in a brothel? of course not ideal, but I'm pretty sure he's more traumatized from seeing richard kill a whole house of people than seeing people having sex… and keeping tommy away from his grandmother is only gonna traumatize him more imo. or am I forgetting something crucial? she did not molest him or anything, right?
ok, I take it all back, be happy with roy instead, gillian! I really hope she gets a happy ending :')
why is she telling the story as if she was responsible for jimmy's death or as if she killed the guy for no reason? didn't she kill that guy who looked like jimmy bc nucky told her to? also why did she pick that specific murder? she could've told him how she killed the commodore instead, roy would've understood.
NOOO! I never thought I'd have so much sympathy for gillian but it seemed like roy really liked her :') I really walked into that one lol…
I just made my way through a few wikipedia articles of these gangsters and it is baffling to me how accurate the show depicted everything. of course some of it is just surmising, but they really got almost everything and everyone in that is known. (only with nucky they took greater creative liberties, but it makes sense bc he is the main character, they did the same in mr selfridge.)
and now that I know what happens to meyer and lucky after a.r.'s death, I want a spinoff. and I haven't even seen season 5 yet. I was a little sceptical why boardwalk empire is considered one of the best tv shows ever made and I don't necessarily agree in terms of inventiveness, but I do think the production is impressive. everything feels very real and I understand the connections, they storytelling is very gripping and the sets are bautifully made. as I've said, some misogyny I could've done without, but I think they did a good job in showing the circumstances of that time.
I just rewatched a scene between a.r. and his wife from season 2 (I clearly need to get to the bottom of this). they are very cordial to each other. maybe a lavender marriage?? I mean he probably married for money, but it could be both.
I also watched a compilation of all his scenes (which is over an hour and a half long, but I only watched the a.r./charlie scenes) and I am telling you, the chemistry with charlie is not something I made up retrospecively. the way they look and smirk at each other and the little touches in every scene, come on. rothstein never had that close of a relationship with meyer. I was positive that they had a thing going on from their very first introduction scene and it was gonna be a big reveal, but that never happened. sometimes the actors just play characters this way though and it was not intended by the writers, think bashir and garak.
and when a.r. tells his story about letting a guy choke to death, I swear charlie looks so turned on. it's even more obvious than I remembered it! they are flirting 24/7, I swear. makes it even sadder that they have that falling out in season 3. but the issues already started in season 2 when charlie and meyer tried to make their own business. and I completely forgot that a.r. tried to have nucky killed in season 1, he was actually pretty unscrupulous then. not that I thought he was a saint, but I honestly forgot he ordered people to actively die (as opposed to being colateral damage). I think the reason why I didn't pay much attention to him was bc I didn't like him wanting to kill nucky bc he had something good going on with margaret. I was rooting for them so bad towards the end of season 1. (btw I also forgot how annoying jimmy was.)
a.r.'s reaction to hearing that charlie sleeps with gillian was another dead giveaway. I swear this is more than a conspiracy theory/headcanon! his little make up (at least it looks like he's wearing brown kajal in season 3, earlier eyebrow pencil and a good helping of foundation and concealer and maybe even a little brown eyeshadow) isn't helping. and when gyp insults a.r. charlie immediately comes to his rescue, but rothstein is just too amused by all of it. and when a.r. rightfully called out nucky on his affair with billie kent, nucky insulted him with "dead below the waist". and apparently people on tumblr think he's more ace than gay as well.
looking back at the start of season 4 "how are you, charlie?" "I'm well a.r." is loaded. they both seem so pained :'(
and oh my god, only about 2 minutes of a.r. screentime left, his death is imminent! watching this feels like prematurely reading his obituary.
"you mustn't worry, I'm a married man" "you must be joking!" it almost sounded as if margaret was suprised that rothstein is married (to a woman) haha. and I'm sorry but rothstein is awfully charming here. sits down with the estranged wife of a former business partner in her humble home to eat cake and drink milk in a civilized manner to help her out financially and actually takes her seriously (which nucky never did). and margaret is right, what her boss is doing legally is not much worse than a.r. is doing illegally. nucky can be a gentleman sometimes, but we all know that a.r. is the real gentleman gangster. bc he never wanted the money for some crazy operation but only to pay for his gambling addiction lol. and the fact that he never hits on any woman. maybe he just likes wife and I'm not used to that by a man in this show. no, I can imagine that well for eli, just not a.r. I stand by my headcanon. gay gentleman gangsters for the win. and last but not least "I've never done business with a woman before". I think you've never done a lot of things with a woman before.
I think the plotline about the black community in the 20s is really interesting. I've never really thought much about this time of segregation and how there were class dynamics including colorism withing the community. I've definitely never seen it from their perspective. and how gross the racism was. like just the fbi people finding it crazy how black people want to liberate themselves.
I just spoilered myself that sally is gonna stay for longer and I realized she's what lizzie is for tommy shelby! when they can't get their first choice, they actually get much more suitable women for them.
I like that gillian is comfortable enough with roy to tell him the true story of her life. except for the end bit about how jimmy died, but I guess she has to keep up that story.
a.r. is not in the heroin business anymore? good time to reconcile with charlie, no!? he also looks a bit healthier than at the beginning of the season. and I totally forgot he had a wife. no, I do vaguely recall it, but I thought they only got engaged. I'm sorry, but this guy is definitely not into women.
I know it sounds weird, but I'm really glad julia and richard didn't get engaged out of love bc I read such a good fanfic where he falls in love with someone else (and so does julia) in an au where he doesn't die. so I like the idea that this random original character is his one true love lol. also love how she basically proposed to him. the whole thing was super awkward though.
not only is sally older, but also much smarter and cooler than any of nucky's younger mistresses. probably the reason why he usually dates younger… margaret was his only match so far, although she was a lot less direct than sally. anyway, you hear me, usually male-centered show!?
also, I have recently noticed that all the female characters wear make up to bed. not only when they have sex for example, but when they're just sleeping.
did dr narcisse (great name btw) just tell daughter to just not have depression :|
"you're kinda cute in your way" sally saying what I've been thinking about nucky from the beginning haha (also probably the sincerest thing a woman has ever said to him).
noo I was afraid the fbi would target eli since they were looking for "the weakest link"
daughter does really sing beautifully though.
the way roy cares for gillian in her withdrawal :') must be the first man who was ever good to her. he's also kinda hot lol. he looks a teeny tiny bit like patrick doyle (mr bates), esp with the beard, but more polished.
glad to see margaret back on slightly, but only slightly, unsavoury business and a.r. back to his usual cheeky smug self. and I have been thinking this for a few episodes now, but he somehow reminds me a bit of morrissey. current morrissey, not 80s. they have a similiar half smile which I find equally endearing as unsettling. and they are both little shits, only in different ways. (and let's not forget the gay/ace thing.)
every once in a while I have this strong feeling that I have seen a scene before, but out of context. either I've watched youtube clips of this show before I properly watched it (entirely possible, but I think I'd remember that) or this show is more repetitive than I thought.
sometimes I'm very aware of how male-gazey this show is. and how grossly almost all women get abused in this. not just physically, but also emotionally. like why did dr narcisse have to be they guy who choked daughter's mom to death and now has this weird religiously and sexually loaded father-daughter relationship with her? and she is so controlled by him that she is his informant and seems to find it normal? urgh.
the main guy weirdly reminded me of a.r. a little bit, although more active/lively and more directly cruel. a gangster vibe for sure. like the evil twin of a.r. (more evil than a real life gangster, huh?) he also played him similarly queer. like what was "I'd prefer to see you without clothes" all about?
other than that liked the idea of data standing up for himself and having moral issues and rethinking the not having emotions thing again! and I did like seeing the crew this little grieving moment, just like the tasha one. but picard was very cold!
and no picard/beverly action today :/
halfway through season 4, I had to rewatch some season 3 scenes. the way a.r. searched for lucky's hand immediately after the explosion. of course to get up, but it was still such a tender moment when he leaned on him to steady himself :') let me have my headcanon. and I forgot why a.r. and lucky parted ways. rothstein saved his own ass and let lucky get beaten up, not great for any relationship… and then he basically said charlie was an uneducated brute. ouch. lucky looked so defeated.
and I fully forgot how epic the last scenes of this season were. nucky and eli were really in the trenches. and then gillian reminding nucky of the time he let the commodore rape her as a child was bone-chilling.
MARGARET! never thought I would miss her so much. and she's mad the moment she lays eyes on nucky. we're so back. the way I cackled at "I wouldn't put something alive in a box" and margaret's dark look. sorry to the chopped up irishman, I forgot his name. also, are they not gonna talk about the baby?
Idk why, but it makes me so happy to see eli being domestic. he's the only one in this show who really has a fulfilled private life (al capone seems ok too, but that's pretty much it).
and I have to repeat, I'm so glad nucky is finally with someone in his age group!
I like the backstory many of the minor characters are getting now that the usual main characters are either gone or not as important anymore (jimmy, margaret, nucky etc). that includes richard, but also eddie, meyer etc. and I like that there is not one giant overspanning plotline, but rather several smaller ones. really gets me back into the show again. although I did like last season's gangster war story, I really disliked nucky and margaret's private storyline.
but it's so funny to me nobody in this show can speak an ounce of german. even eddie, who is supposed to be german, sounds ridiculous. this happens a lot in american movies, but I've never seen it in a tv show that has a rather important german character so far.
why are we in brooklyn all the time and margaret hasn't come up yet??
nooo I didn't expect eddie to end this way. and he didn't die from a bullet wound but richard will? (unfortunately I have spoilered myself from fanfiction)
omg I just recognized chicago instantly - literally from watching shameless, I've never been there. I recognized the L and this specific type of house. fiona's annoying irish boyfriend would've loved that ornamental stucco. seems like nothing has changed there in almost 100 years.
but rothstein is really loosing it, he be missing charlie :/ meanwhile meyer still seems to be working with him?
