So is it pedantic when people point out that narcissistic is not the same as "egotistical/self-absorbed/emotionally abusive"?

Is it pedantic when people point out that psycho, psychopath, and sociopath aren't the same thing as "criminal/abuser"?

Is it pedantic when people point out that schizophrenic, psychosis, and delusional aren't the same as "quirky/lying to oneself"?

Is it pedantic when people point out that ADHD and autism are not the same as "being quirky"?

Is it pedantic when people point out that low/no empathy/sympathy is not the same thing as "being cruel"?

Is it pedantic? Or are you just unwilling to admit that paraphilic disorders are stigmatized, and that thousands of non-offending paraphiles get demonized by your statements?

Is it pedantic? Or are you just unwilling to recognize that most predators do not have para disorders [link], and that even those who do are predatory because they're bad people, not because of their condition?

When will ya'll admit that you're unwilling to give up the concept of an "evil disorder"?

The worst thing is that there is so much potential for exploring the horror of psych wards from the angle of medical abuse, ableism, forced treatment/drugging, loss of autonomy, power imbalance, demonization, dehumanization, etc, and YET the horror genre keeps defaulting to "insane asylums and psych wards are scary because there are mentally ill people in there"

the "empathy fatigue" stuff is also very revealing because when you examine health professionals' self-reporting on the matter there is a specific type of person they describe losing empathy for- unsurprisingly, it's people with particularly chronic health issues and disability, drug users, people who "refuse to take care of themselves" and especially anyone with a health condition perceived to be "their own fault". very often what they describe as "empathy fatigue" is actually just the mask slipping on the seething contempt they already held

oh, during burnout you happen to feel less empathetic toward criminals, alcoholics, teens and drug users? that's really interesting and i feel so sorry for how hard your job must be that its caused these feelings in you.

do you think someone is homophobic for shipping a character whos canonically gay/lesbian with a character whos the other gender? (sorry if this doesnt make sense)

I think it depends on their intentions and that is something no one else can answer but them.

whether or not someone is homophobic depends on whether or not they are homophobic, not what fictional characters they ship or what fanfiction they write or read. like… why do they ship a gay character with a female character? if it’s because they just like the ship and want to have fun, then they just like the ship and want to have fun.

but if they ship a gay character with a female character because they think being gay is wrong, then they are homophobic.

preferring a straight ship for queer characters alone does not make someone homophobic unless that someone is actually homophobic.

the characters are just dolls people play with, and there’s no wrong way for anybody to play with their imaginary characters. so it’s all about the intention of that person.

but if you feel like they’re being homophobic or if you’re uncomfortable with them or their works, my advice would still be to not interact with them (block or mute them if it’ll make you more comfortable) instead of trying to call them out or saying they’re homophobic, unless they are actually being outright homophobic, because we don’t know their intentions and no one owes anyone any explanation about their taste/preferences in fiction
