Will Standring, New Year Shower off Tinderbox, 2014, Pastel on Fisher 400 Sandpaper, 19cm x 27cm.

Without a coat or a bag for the camera, when I saw this rain I was sure I was going to get drenched. This rainstorm was driven quickly towards me up the channel and you could see the wall of rain progressing, it obscured the surface of the water less than a kilometre away. Practically no rain actually reached me on the shore as the rain was soon spent and the cloud it came from literally evaporated in the midsummer sun. 

Although much warmer and sunnier than the UK, tasmania weather can be more extreme particularly in the south. The high winds in this painting ran to the north of a line of five low pressure systems that had run unchecked across the south Atlantic and Indian Oceans before slamming into Tassie.

This work was done quickly on sandpaper which is a very unforgiving (and hungry) surface for soft pastels. It is not possible to easily blend or remove colour once it is on and in that respect it is more similar to working with watercolour. The sea is painted using three colours with the paper showing through.

In my second year of uni in North Wales, I spent three months living on a similar boat to this - The Vigilance ℅ Harbour Master, Porth Penrhyn, Bangor.

The reflections are on the Huon river near Franklin, Tasmania. Originally I’d intended this to be part of the series on reflections and contours but it has a completely different feel and colour scheme to the other water paintings.
