jace-lamonte:
The cool afternoon started to settle in around them as the sun went down. Jace had spent hours outside a coffee shop, picking at a muffin like a bird, people-watching, and drawing anyone who sat down for longer than ten minutes. A couple people had stopped to observe them, and each time, they offered their sketch page up for perusal.Â
When it happened again, they looked up. âWanna see?â Without waiting for an answer, they put their sketchbook on the table open on their most recent page which featured a rough, 2D version of the stranger, headphones in and a coffee cup pressed to their lips. Alongside it was a smattering of other faces, half finished and partially shaded.
Sara should have learned her lesson by this point but it was a character flaw. Repeating past mistakes and besides, the last time she let her curiosity get the better of her, she got a nice gift. Not that she was expecting the same this time but it felt like she just always wanted to know what people were sketching so intently and also how they managed to make it so realistic. Watching their hands move, Sara was surprised at the manner in which there was so much casualness in each stroke. Surprised when they spoke, showing her the image she found not only her face, but those of many others beside it. âSorry,â she muttered, worried the stranger was annoyed and was showing her just to get her to leave. âI wasnât looking. I mean I was but I didnât mean to stare. And you didnât have to show me. Itâs your work after all. Not that itâs not great. It is.âÂ
blakereeves22:
Blake liked the other, and his only problem how much she worried and didnât see her true value. Although, he would admit he was slightly hypocritical in comparison. âThatâs okayâ he added. Before shrugging, âExams, more than anything. I sometimes tense up, and I always just seem to sweat buckets during them. I donât mind, we can talk about anything you likeâ.
And yet again they were proving to be quite contrary in so many ways, this included. âI prefer exams. They are often more straightforward. I worry before every essay that Iâm missing something big or that Iâm just going about it all wrong.â It wasnât that she wasnât good because maybe if she invested a lot of time into the subject, sheâd manage just as well. But there seemed to be a style and structure associated with every discipline and she couldnât keep track of them all.Â
bakemyday-eisley:
According to Eisley, there was truly nothing better than hearing the muffled conversations and laughter over the music playing on the speakers throughout the shop, or even seeing new and old faces come through the doors to see what all the hype was about over the small corner bakery that was gaining the attention of a few big names. This was all she wanted, all she worked for in the past few years and it was all hersânow all she wanted was for the person who broke her heart to see just what she made the heartache become which was something amazing.
As she walked out the freshly baked and decorated batch that happened to be the special of the week, the raven haired women saw the door open matched with the small chime to signal that the door had opened. Looking up after placing the tray she held in her had on the counter, she welcomed them in. âHey! Welcome to The BreakâUp Cafe.â She said with a cheerful smile. âCan I snag you anything or do you need a minute?â
She wasnât quite sure when the last time that she ate was. Running around the whole day from one place to another, trying to get as much done as possible while also working was proving difficult. Not to mention the fact that she was not getting nearly enough sleep these days. She was too tired and that reflected in the lack of efficiency in her work. So now her entire schedule was off and all Sara could do was rush to the bakery she found in hopes that sheâd find something to eat. Of course right as she was entering she saw an email that told her the final assignment she had been rushing to finish had been pushed. Anytime before finals apparently. Which gave her a second to breathe as she entered only slightly more leisurely, having not seen the name before doing so. When the woman announced it however, Sara looked up surprised. âOh, um, I didnât realize. Do I need to be going through a break up or something?â Stupid question of course but the name caught her off guard.Â
kimtaemiin:
Nights poorly slept were part of his life now. Not that Taemin was complaining about itâthey came with the life heâd chosen to live, which only meant more coffee to be consumed, right? He was about to have his fifth cup today and Tae wasnât particularly worried about what it would do to his body, up until he took a large sip from his iced coffee and he felt his hand twitch a little. âWoahâŠâ Letting out a chuckle, he stretched out his fingers, watching them tremble, which only made him more amused. âHow much coffee is too much coffee, am I right?â
He was only one of many that Sara saw that came in and out of the coffee shop of course. Not a familiar face, Sara took the next cup of coffee to his table which was when she also noticed the slight quivering in his hand. âIâd guess the five cups youâve had so far,ââ Sara informed him. Because that did not seem okay. âToo bad coffee shops donât work like bars so I donât have the authority to cut you off.â If it were in her hands, she would have done so by the third large iced coffee.
isabelcxsillas:
In many ways, Isabel had been grateful for having stumbled upon an ad for a roommate from Sara. Not only the other woman was nice and kind, but she was also respectful and willing to put up with a lot of Isabel strangeness, like her constant singing and her incessant babbling. And while Sara was a quiet one, Isabel didnât feel like she was being annoying or a bother to the other woman, which was even better, in her opinion. Now, they were going to rearrange Isabelâs room in order to bring good luckâsheâd bounced from apartment to apartment back in New York and hadnât found anyone who was this kind, so yes, she was definitely in luck. Making plans had never been Isabelâs forte, but this didnât seem something she would easily forget, especially since rearranging her bedroom would also stand for more bonding time with her roommate, so no, definitely not something she would forget. With a smile on her face, she noticed as Saraâs toddler Sean entered the kitchen holding a toy to show her, which brightened up her smile even more. It was really nice to see these two interacting, especially since Sean reminded her a bit of Zac, even if she didnât have that maternal instinct around him. She feared that if she ever started developing that, she would start regretting having given him up for adoption, and that was not something sheâd be able to live with. âHey, Sean!â Isabel crouched down to get on his eye level. âWhat you got there? Can I see it too?â She glanced up at Sara to check if it was okay with her, then returned her gaze to the little kid.
Bel allowed herself to play with him for a moment there, which didnât distract her from talking to her roommate, of course. Although children were distracting in general, she figured sheâd gotten quite good at multitasking due to her years as a babysitter. âAll over the place, really.â She replied when Sara asked about where sheâd lived in New York. âVivaan and I used to live in a small apartment close to his Columbia campus, which was nice because it was also not that far from my community college either. Then we moved to a bigger apartment in the Village after his first book was a hit and we lived there up until we broke off our engagement. I think he kept the apartment? I donât know⊠I moved to a small apartment in Astoria, then one in Queens and ended up in Harlem before I moved here. Have you been to New York?â Money was short and she didnât have friends in NY that werenât Vivaanâs friends. Her whole experience there hadnât been the best, but maybe this happened because she fantasized a lot⊠she wanted things to go a certain way and didnât really see other alternatives to reach her goals, so her failure had also been her fault. âOh my God, really? Honestly Sara, I wish you guys all the luck. I might be slightly sad that no oneâs ever looked at me the same way he looks at you, but I just want the people around me to be happy.â Isabel said, wiggling the toy towards Sean, who took it from her hands laughing. âGood people deserve happiness, I know that much.â And thatâs where she got to think about her own wordingâif good people deserved happiness, why didnât she feel one hundred percent happy? Was she not a good person? It was worth to think about it. âWeâll celebrate your success with wine and youâll celebrate tall dark and handsome with some s-e-x.â See? How could she be a good person if she was this inappropriate?
If there was one thing that Sara loved, it was watching her son interact with others. It reminded her of her own childhood, the ways in which she would completely seclude herself from the group. There had been a few children that tried to get her to play with them at school when she was first adopted. Those who had a very regular childhood, nothing like the one that she had, were the normal ones. They were the ones who engaged with everyone on the playground, would run from place to place with smiles. Meanwhile she would sit on the bench, waiting for recess to be over and to be ushered back into the classroom where they would begin to work and she wouldnât say a single word. To the extent that people began to think she was completely odd and avoided her all together. So by the time she was ready to talk to people, it was already too late and they had already left her alone. Sean turned around, excited to show Isabel the toy in his hand. âCar!â He exclaimed and showed her how it went forward as he wound it up. She smiled at the enthusiasm and ease with which he spoke to people, thinking it was evidence that he was not odd like she had been. He was one of the normal ones and she was more than grateful that his childhood was shaping up so differently compared to hers. He ran off to get the car before bounding back to show her once more, excitement not dying down one bit.
She was surprised to find out that her roommate had actually been in the same city at the same time as her. Perhaps their paths would have crossed earlier or maybe they were always just missing each other. It was quite intriguing for a person like Sara who put so much belief and importance in even the smallest details in her life. And this was a big one. âYeah, I used to live there too. I was in Queens for a while but then I moved to Brooklyn.â Her motherâs apartment had been in Queens but she left as soon as she could, staying in a very shoddy place in Brooklyn that she could barely afford on what she was making. But anything was better than being with her mother. It was unfair of her perhaps because the woman hadnât done anything so horrible to her that merited such profound aversion, and yet that was really all she felt. Â She should have known that she wouldnât be able to sustain her life in New York for too long, not only because of the money. She was too close to her mother and she could still come by whenever she needed to because unfortunately for all the distaste Sara had, she hadnât been able to completely keep her mother in the dark of her whereabouts. She hadnât moved so much in New York as her roommate though she moved around in the country, to so many places she couldnât even really remember. The conversation about Seok made her just nod. There was something there, yes. Was it something Sara wished to explore deeper at this point? No. Why mess with something when it wasnât broken? âFood! Have you eaten dinner Isabel?â Sara asked, diverting the conversation in a far from elegant way.
ericburns:
Eric laughed at that. âI agree. It is a hard job, but luckily if doesnât have to be your last one if you are a waiter or a host. You can do something else or move up the chain.â He shrugged. He was totally surprised that he was talking to a mother. She seemed so young, but not everything you see is it always the true. She could be older and just have a baby face. âIt is the adorable baby face. You just donât want them to get old and mean.â
âThatâs true.â Though if it really was, why did it feel like Sara had been in the same place in her life forever? Like years were just passing her by and nothing was actually happening with her to make her feel that yes, she was progressing? âIs that how your son is? Old and mean?â She asked with amusement for a second before quickly adding. âIâm kidding. Youâre right though. I just donât want him to grow up out of this adorable phase.â Maybe that had more to do with her than anything though. She didnât want yet another person to not really need her.Â
ceciliakings:
Youâre really sweet. Cecilia had heard those words so many times, but they usually came with a negative connotation. Youâre so sweet, thatâs why people take advantage of you. Or youâre so sweet, you should be able to speak up more or else, people will walk all over you. It had been one hell of an experience ever since sheâd moved to Westwick three years ago, and while Cece had indeed learned how to thicken her backbone, she would still had a long way to go. The way Sara had said, however, didnât make her feel weird or silly, so she thanked the woman with a smile, right before she furrowed her brows, watching at the brunette handed it back the drawing that sheâd made her. âOh⊠no, this is yours.â Unless she didnât want and was hinting at Cecilia and Cece was just not getting itâwhich, obviously, made her grow self-conscious of that.
Cece did recognize that nice way of dismissing invitations because she used to do that all the time. Especially before Andrew and her started dating, because after that, she could always just invite him too and hang out with him whenever she wasnât feeling her best. âItâs alright.â She waved her hand in the air, dismissing Saraâs words and showing her that she was definitely neither angry nor upset with her. âIf a stranger asked me to hang out with them and their friend, I wouldâve said no too. No hard feelings, I promise. The invitation is open to whenever you feel like it and if you never feel like it, thatâs okay too. Ah! Iâm Cecilia, by the way.â
Sara wasnât sure how to react to the drawing. Of course she would keep it because it was so nice of the woman before her and it was so well done. Though she couldnât help but wonder if keeping a picture of her smile was narcissistic of her. Not that anyone would ask but it seemed too well done for her to just put it in a drawer somewhere but it wasnât like she could hang it up knowing full well that it was her smile. So what was she supposed to do with it? These were the issues that plagued Saraâs mind, the way that she ended up thinking about such unnecessary and trivial things, making them seem like they were so important. It was a way maybe to just downplay the other very serious issues in her life, a way to run from them while she solved the frivolous issues she created for herself. Maybe sheâd just put it beside her bed and that way it wouldnât be tossed somewhere but wouldnât be in plain sight either. Realizing she had grown quiet, she took the paper and folded it carefully only at the ends, enough to fit it into her pocket without ruining the image. âThanks, Iâve never really gotten something like this before.â It was definitely a first that she received a sketch to begin with and definitely a first of it being one of her.
At the otherâs words, Sara recognized that was her way of gracefully excusing Sara from any such obligation but at the same time, the way it was worded made her feel as though she may have unintentionally insulted the woman. Even if Cecilia, as she informed her, didnât take it as a rude gesture, just the fact that the other had invited her so nicely and she had pretty much refused to her face made Sara feel self conscious all over again. It would have been better if she said yes, gone and forced herself to interact with strangers for a few hours and then left. At least she wouldnât feel this discomfort. âNo itâs not like that. I actually really donât have all that much time. I work most days and then I have school at night and also a toddler back at home,â she rambled on in an attempt to validate her words so that Cecilia didnât think that she really was just trying to blow her off. Which yes, she had been, but also there were real reasons. âSara,â she said and then looked down at her nametag. âBut you already knew that.â
blakereeves22:
âYeah, itâs nice to see you outside of the learning environmentâ he added, âI do consider you to be a friend of mineâ. âTrust me, Iâd like to think if you were a professional thief youâd do it somewhere better then hereâ he joked towards the other, trying to make her feel less awkward. âI have to prepare a lotâ he added, âBut thanks for the compliment even if I donât agreeâ.
If she were honest, it wasnât like she often did run into Blake outside of school. It was her own issue of wanting to compartmentalize people in her life too. So certain people only functioned in certain spheres. Blake was only for college so it was a surprise to see him outside that sphere for her. âThanks for giving me the benefit of the doubt on that,â she said with a small smile. Understanding the inability to accept a compliment well, even though in this case it was very deserved, she didnât push. âPapers or exams? Unless you would rather not talk about school seeing as we arenât there and maybe youâre already stressed enough without me constantly talking about only that.â Maybe that was why he said it was nice to see her outside of class.Â
mscarleighaortiz:
Carly grins as she sees her laugh thankful to see her enjoying herself if only for a moment. She nods taking a seat across from her. âThatâs a good choice. Thereâs a lot of good work nowadays in that field. If Iâm honest Isabel did nudge me your way but I agree with her youâre hardworking and smart, you would be a good fit and if you like Titan, i can definitely nudge Ronnie and Ro your way as wellâÂ
Sara knew well that she had to stop feeling this sense of guilt that she hadnât applied. It wasnât like she was being handed anything and if she didnât ask for things, how could she expect to get them? Now was a chance for her to take the initiative and do something for her own future. âHonestly, Iâd love the experience,â she told Carly, looking down at the napkin before her. âI donât have too much on my resume as it relates to industry but academically Iâve taken classes in a wide range of disciplines within the realm of CS.â It was always easier to talk about work and school than herself. âAnd Iâm more than happy to learn whatever I need to to be useful to a team.â Though her eyes had been down the whole time, she looked up tentatively at Carly.Â
jeongseokli:
Jeong Seok-li knew himself. He knew that the more Sara spoke, the more heâd fear sheâd end up telling him unwanted to news or calling him a âgood friendâ, which, he knew he wasâand he knew she was a good friend too, but it was something entirely different when he was also aware of how he felt for Sara, so he was constantly worrying that one day sheâd wake up and decide that they could only be friends, and he wouldâve wasted his chances of fighting for them because heâd waited too long. Given that, of course he began over analyzing every inch of what Sara had said when âI wish sometimes that there were no responsibilities and I could just be with him all the timeâ, but luckily for him, Sara continued and included Seok in her words which calmed him down a little. He knew this was all because of his fear of abandonment, and this, mixed with his apparent indifference was what had ruined his relationships in the past. Sara was the one who seemed to have become a constant in his life, not only because of Shion, but also because of the way he felt about her. Seok knew he needed to talk about this with Shea and made a mental note to keep track of his pills too, and instead of saying much on the matter and ended up saying something stupid, he locked Sara in his embrace and leaned onto her head, ghosting the side of his lips against her forehead and planting a soft kiss there. âWeâre doing our best, Sara-yah.â There was also the familiar sensation of comfort whenever he was around Sara because he could use his mother language. It was part of his identityâit made him feel more like himself under his own skin, speaking Korean⊠So whenever he was with Sara and Hyun, Seok would immediately switch back to Korean. âHe knows that we love him and that weâre doing our best.â
He hadnât planned for this to happen⊠to be laying in bed, kissing Sara. Yes, they had their moments, but they also knew how to keep their hands off one another. Was it difficult for him to keep his hands off her? No. But it wasnât easy either. Seokli craved for the intimacy he had been lacking ever since the death of his parents. Hand holding, hugs, kisses⊠he craved for physical contact, but he also knew how to respect peopleâs space, especially Saraâs. Yet, here he was, pressing his lips to hers, his fingers brushing her hair back and adjusting his body under hers so he could wrap one arm around her waist. And then he realized what he was doing and stopped himselfâthat was the downside of not knowing where they stood: for the most part, he didnât know what were their limits. So, unless Sara showed it to him or he was consumed by a streak of courage, Seok was always like this, in this constant push and pull with himself. I missed this, I missed you⊠He caught himself saying and part of him regretted doing so, because he didnât want his actions to push Sara away, but when he caught her gaze, it was like something was telling him that it was okay, that she wasnât leaving. And when her lips touched his, he felt relieved, involuntarily tightening his grip around her petite frame. There was something about Saraâit was like she knew exactly what to do to ease his mind. She knew the jokes to crack and when to say them, she knew him.
Cupping her cheek with one hand as her lips teased his, Seok had a couple of seconds to think about some things to tell her. Compliments she might accept. âLetâs seeââ His lips traveled along her jaw line, making their way up towards her earlobe⊠âYouâre an amazing motherâŠâ Caressing her skin with soft kisses, his hand sneaked under her shirt and found a home on the small of her back in order to keep her body close to his. âYouâre smartâŠâ He whispered, nibbling her earlobe. âHard-working⊠BeautifulâŠâ His hand began traveling up and down her back. âEven when you have bags under your eyes..â Seok then leaned back in order to look into her eyes for a moment. âYou carry an entire galaxy in your eyes. Iâm the luckiest to have met you.â Knowing him, of course heâd have to get all poetic and romantic. It wouldnât be Seokli if he didnât put some extra effort in order to say nice things to Sara. His gaze was locked on hers for a brief second before he stole another kiss from her. âHow are those for compliments?â Once again, he mumbled onto the kiss, a careless, goofy smile toying on his lips and even when Seok pulled away to look at her again, said smile remained there. âAre you tired? Do you want me to stop talking and let you go to sleep?â
Though she didnât think about it too often, not a fan of overanalyzing this because that had a tendency of ruining everything, if she stopped to actually look at what drew her to Seok, sheâd realize all the similarities he had to what drew her to her parents. The very same patience, the very same comfort, the very same safety, she felt all those when she was with him. In an all too familiar embrace, she felt as though she were treasured. Whether she actually was or not was besides the point, because if she got into thinking of that, her own fears and her own insecurities would steal this feeling away from her. No she didnât want to inject her negativity and pessimism into this emotion. So it didnât matter if he intended for her to feel that way or if he even actually felt that way to Sara. The important thing was that in his arms, often times she felt that she was important. And it wasnât often that she actually felt that way in her life. Abandoned, thrown from home to home, no real connections, barely anyone to call family, Sara very rarely felt as though her presence meant something. Seok helped her feel that way, especially now and more with the passing of time and of course Sean as well. On top of that, the added mother tongue reminded her of her childhood with her adoptive parents who had been the ones to teach her the language. When she refused to speak to anyone, they coaxed her out of that lull by speaking to her in a language that didnât have a negative association in her mind. One she did not fear. She nodded against his chest, knowing that they were doing the best that they could. Of course they were. âI know. I guess itâs what every parent wants. To give their child everything. I just feel it a little more at this time of night.â Sara replied casually, trying to brush off the intensity with which she loved their son and also the desperation she harbored to make sure that his childhood had no resemblance to her own. She wanted to give him the world and more to make sure that he never, ever, felt like she did.
Life had never been planned for Sara and she learned to adapt to that. She learned to read signs, predict what was happening and try and adjust before the storm. Because there were some who thought they could avert the coming disasters or if they were really ambitious, that they could stop them. Sara was not among such people and truth be told, she thought those individuals were either fools for thinking that way or superhuman if they actually succeeded. All she could do was prepare herself for the next disaster, weather the next storm and come out a little more battered and bruised but alive. So it wasnât that she went with the flow so much as it was she just took life as it came to her. That was why she didnât like expressing herself all that much and she didnât like anything all that permanent. Change was the only constant in life right? So why bother trying for something everlasting when it would eventually disappear or transform into something else? Sara was completely oblivious to the storms that waged in the mind of the man beside her at times, but other times she felt that she knew how to diver the topic away from those concrete talks without raising red flags in his mind. She took his cues because in many ways, Sara was stagnant until life threw something at her. She was never active until she was given the green light. His kiss had given her the sign that it was okay for her to kiss back and for her to kiss him first. At least this time. Perhaps next time it would be different and all of this would be off bounds. And she would respect that because that was precisely what Sara was good at. Adapting to situations and accepting them as they were given to her.
A ghost of a smile was on her features as he listed off compliments. âGood start,â she appreciated as his lips continued to pepper kisses. She could accept that because she really did hope she was a good mother and while she believed she could always be better, she would accept that she did everything in her power for their son. Her intellect was another good point to touch upon because she would accept that. Not because it spoke to her but rather because in her mind, her intellect was more associated with her father who had taught her all that she knew and instilled in a respect for education. To hear that she was intelligent and hardworking was more of a compliment of her father and mother than it was for her. âRight track,â she teased though once it hit her beauty and he began to get all poetic, she knew the brakes had to be applied. That was directed only at her. Nonetheless, the fact that she wouldnât accept compliments was more of a way to continue to tease than it was for her to really contest everything he said. âYou know English is my weakest subject. I donât do well with metaphors. Or is that a simile?â Conversation diverted away from the last bit though she did mirror the sentiment he expressed at the end. It wasnât in Saraâs DNA perhaps to actually say it out loud that yes, she thought she also was the luckiest to have met him, but she did feel it. Of course his mention of sleep only reminded her body of the exhaustion and she nodded lightly. His hand moving up and down her back had been all too soothing, as though that alone could lull her into a deep slumber. "Tell me more about your day. Iâll fall asleep listening to you."
rohanbhakta:
No matter how far technology would advance, the one thing that would never dissipate was customer service. Businesses could have all the automatic things in the world but being able to physically communicate with another person was the one constant, priceless variable in all of it. Saraâs remark of him being her favorite customer had him giving a sort of bashful wave, playing with her. If itâd help to lighten things in any way or make her smile, that was typically his goal when he stopped in. At the mention of Titan though, he could see the change in her expression. Either people had heard of it or they were completely oblivious to the computer world in that regard. Rohan figured she might have been familiar with it but he certainly wasnât boasting about it. He usually kept his lips sealed when it came to what he did. At least those very specifics. âThat is a very fair point. Iâll keep that one in mind. And I do like cakeâŠâ He smiled. It was something to maybe look into if he was really serious. It generally wasnât that hard to make a decision. Not that everything in his life was black and whiteâthere were plenty of grey areas, too. But this one was a much more permanent decision in the long run.Â
Something that was easy to do that took zero thought? Handing Sara a card and more or less offering her a job on the spot. Even if they really barely knew each other since theyâd never spoke outside of her place of work. Rohan didnât want to just hand her a job because he knew that could be demeaning. But he did want her to know that option was very much there. And if he needed to, he could give her a hard time in the interviewing process. He and Aaron both. If she decided she did want to stop by. Rohan nodded. âItâs really just a piece of paper. More like advertising. The doors are open, though.â He tried to make it sound a little less like, âthe moment you set foot within those walls, you have the jobâ type of thing. Rohan couldnât help but smile as she seemed to get a little flustered, rambling more than usual. âNo, no. I never took that as bribery. Donât even worry about any of that. But as a valued customer, I wouldnât say no to a danish.â
She did hope that he would end up pursuing what he enjoyed because while there wasnât anyone who understood the appeal of comfort more than Sara, she also knew that sometimes it was necessary to push yourself. It was a bit hypocritical of her to say that which was precisely why she also decided in that moment to follow up about that possible interview as well. She couldnât preach about taking chances when she herself was taking the safe path for as long as she could. Just as she believed that every person in her life was there for a reason, maybe meeting Rohan was also among those. While she had no idea that he was the CEO of the company she would have loved to work in, she did learn that in at least a few ways they were similar. So maybe he was supposed to be her motivation to branch out and try something beyond her comfort zone and if she succeeded, she could return the favor, encouraging him to do the same. All these were nothing more than mere thoughts at the moment, though there was a newfound enthusiasm to make them a reality. âI doubt there is anyone who doesnât like cake.âÂ
Sara moved to actually get him the danish in an attempt to brush over her own awkwardness at the entire encounter. âYour danish,â she said with a smile, placing it before him,. She likely wouldnât be able to express to him just how much an offer like this meant to her. Even if she wanted to, she was not all that vocal so she likely wouldnât have told him anyways. Nonetheless, the breakfast pasty was her small attempt at conveying gratitude. âItâs a novel recruiting technique, I must say,â she said with a chuckle. But she also appreciated the fact that he didnât seem to push and that would give her the chance to actually try and get the job on her own merits. If it didnât work out, she would at least know that she tried and also would know what she needed to improve before trying for another internship. So while she was taking many peopleâs advice, her roommateâs included and trying to be more involved n her own future, be more excited about getting out of this job that reminded her of her mother on a daily basis, she also was trying to be realistic given her significant lack of expertise.Â

Peaking inside he frowns as he tries to see if he can spot someone, even in the back. Lifting a heavy hand he makes several loud knocks on the door his head shifting over to her. âWell if they are in there, Thatâll atleast get their attention.â Knocking again just in case they brushed of the sound he waited to see if someone inside stepped out.Â
Sara jumped slightly when he suddenly knocked on the door loudly. The sound reverberated and she suspected whoever was inside would not be able to miss that. After all, her knocks were just as quiet as she was, not wanting to be too much of a bother. She waited to see and when a light went on in the back, her eyes lit up in a similar manner. âOh my god,â she exclaimed before knocking herself.Â

âRight before dinner sounds perfect to me.â Isabel wanted to thank Sara once again, but figured that she was probably going to start sounding rather obnoxious about it, so she wasnât going to become the worldâs worst roommate (in her own, drama queen mind frame). âAnd no, I definitely donât mind you touching my things. Itâs not like I have anything of value anyway.â Or that she would expect Sara to steal anything, but yes, touching things without peopleâs permission was always bad, so she was glad theyâd talked about it in the first place. âBesidesâI know where you live.â Bel teased, winking at the other woman as she chuckled softly. It felt so nice to see Sara smiling or attempting to open up. Ever since Isabel had moved in, this was possibly their longest, deepest conversation so far and hopefully, theyâd have more like those in the future. Especially if Carly managed to get Sara either an interview or simply put in a good word for her at Titan. âI donât want you to do everything by yourself though. Not because I donât want you alone in my room, but because I donât want for it to be like some kind of obligation to you. But Iâll make sure to buy us some wine so we can drink a couple of glasses while changing some things in my bedroom. I need all the good energies I can get.â Especially if she was thinking of going back to acting.
Finally, when she saw Sara being more positing about the possibility of having a job interview at Titan Tech, Isabel couldnât help but to offer her a smile. âThatâs more like it!â The older brunette giggled softly, running her fingers through her hair and pinning into a ponytail. âTake it for someone whoâs gotten a lot of rejection when trying to fulfil her dream: youâll never know until you try. Until then, you have to keep believing in yourself and making sure everyone sees youâre doing your bestâespecially making yourself see that.â Most people, Isabel included, were horrible to themselves. They tended to put themselves down and not believe they can do some things. âIf it doesnât work, it doesnâtâŠ. but if itâs up to me, youâll start working at Titan Tech as soon as possible. Youâll see.â Once again, she offered Sara a smile, but also yet another piece of information that she had not asked for, but Isabel responded anyway. âIâll take you out to celebrate in case something happens, but I wonât be talking about it now in order not to jynx itâŠ. deal?
Talking about Vivaan was still weird, but at least it didnât hurt anymore, so when Sara asked about him, Isabel couldnât help but to shrug a little. âUm⊠about two to three years ago. I still spent some years in New York trying to keep my head above water. We literally crashed and burned. I mean⊠Iâd known him all my life. Weâd dated ever since my first high school year.â Sometimes it made her wonder what wouldâve happened if Vivaan and her had gotten married, but right now. CHances were, theyâd probably be , it wouldâve been a great to just focus on herself. âAlright. You should talk to dark and handsome⊠I can even keep an eye on Sean if you ever need, of course.â
With the plan made, Sara would need to make sure that on the day she checked the position of the stars and sun. It was unusual these days to find people who, rather than ridiculing her for having such superstitions, would actually support and be excited about them. Maybe she had gotten lucky in many ways with her roommate because while her personality was starkly different from Saraâs, the aura around her was pure. She was a kind soul and what more could she have wanted in a roommate? And while she was few of words, it was true she was quite grateful to have Isabel who didnât push too hard many times but still seemed to make an effort rather than just give up when Sara didnât speak too much. And it was precisely because Sara knew how unfair it was of her to expect that of others that she appreciated so greatly the few who actually did. Smiling at the joke she nodded. âThen weâll do it together and Iâm sure we can get it done before you have to go.â The mention of wine immediately made the entire plan better because Sara did love wine. Her plan that night would have just been to go to the bar and at least this way, she wouldnât have to. Avoid seeing the bartender she always told sheâd stop visiting.
Sara had not ever faced rejection in her life because she never tried for anything that she risked failing. Life had always made her stop well before she had a chance to actually move forward. This was probably her first time taking a risk with her profession and she could admit she was worried. Isabelâs words were comforting to her but at the same time she was still quite concerned. Because there was so little on her resume that she couldnât imagine sending it to tech companies and even making it to the first round. Of course she knew the logically fallacy in her own thinking since her resume would never fill up unless she actually applied. So this was a good first step that she was being forced to take since if it was left on Sara, it would take a lot longer. School was safe but job hunting was dangerous. âIâll be cautiously hopeful then,â she concluded. There would be a bit of excitement with a whole lot of preparation for rejection. âThat sounds great.â She said, knocking on the wooden cabinet above her head to ward off whatever jinxes might have impacted her shot at this job.
Sara probably should have known more about Isabel than she did but better late than never right? Not as if she was the one that initiated this session of conversation of nonetheless, she was engaging right? Finding out that the other had been in New York for some years surprised her. âNew York? Where?â Because for her, some of her worst memories were associated with the city but it was still a point of commonality. Perhaps their paths had crossed before and they just didnât know. It was quite amazing to think that their lives could have been intertwined far before they became roommates. It would have been a stretch but not an impossibility. âIâll talk to him after this whole interview thing.â Since that was the main hindrance for her; that and her own superstitions. âBut thank you for offering. Maybe Iâll take you up on it.â Depending on how the this new opportunity panned out for her.

âHonestly, Itâs nice to see you Saraâ he admitted, to the other. âTrust me, I have nothing better to doâ he nodded, leaning against the wall âIâm a bit stressed about them, and I really need to spend more time actually preparingâ.
âOh, really?â She didnât expect that because most of the time she felt like she was a burden, him having to explain things to her just so she could pass her class. âUm, thank you. Iâm glad you didnât think I was robbing the place.â She continued, biting her bottom lip since she was grateful it was him that found her too. âYou? Youâre practically at the professorâs level. Do you really prepare?âÂ

âWell, you would have my business. And I would go no place else. Why do you think I always come here? I mean, itâs conveniently on the way but I look forward to our chats. Best part of the morning aside from the caffeine itself.â It was all hypothetical talk, her opening and running her own coffee shop. Not that she couldnât do it. But Rohan figured she was definitely destined for more than that. He did always look forward to their chats, though. Rohan gave her question some thought. He already knew the answer. It was just a matter of how much he wanted to sayâthe full truth or only part of it. âLong story short, letâs see⊠I love my current job?â Rohan made a slight face while shrugging. âI work for a company called Titan Technologies. Itâs basically a cyber security company. And I may or may not be a co-founder of said company. So, of course I love it, yeah? I just donât know that I could leave it. Or the people. Itâs like one of those scenarios where if itâs not broke, donât fix it. Iâm happy with where I am.â The other half of the truth was that he didnât think he could get in to Naughty Dog. âHappy in my career, at least. The other parts could use some work.â Hearing Sara out, Rohan smiled. She was beyond intelligent and this just further illustrated the whole point of her being destined for more than mere customer service. It wasnât his place to push or pry, but that didnât mean he couldnât offer. âLook,â he pulled his wallet from his back pocket and slid a business card from it, extending it towards Sara, âI know this may come as a bit sudden and well, unexpected. But if youâre interested, Iâm sure we could get you on at Titan. Iâll mention you to Aaron, run it by him. Heâs the other half of the company. The address is on the card if you ever want to stop by. My mobile is there as well if you have any questions. But⊠think about it. Iâd be happy to have you as a part of the team.â Rohan paused, considering the fact that it might have been too much to offer seemingly out of the blue. âTotally up to you, though. No pressure. Iâd still come by here and we can always have our chats either way.â
âItâd be one step down from the robot run restaurants that have been cropping up. So I can do my civic duty and not play into the robots taking over service jobs prediction.â After all, her own past gave her reason to support others who needed such jobs. Sara smiled, appreciating the support and resisting the urge to just brush off whatever form of compliment he had tried to give her. Instead she just didnât focus on it, having never been the best when it came to kind words directed at her. âYou are my favorite customer of course.â And it was mostly because of the conversations they had and the fact that in a very mundane day, she experienced some enthusiasm when he came in. Sara leaned against the counter, listening to his reason. She wasnât sure she could relate to what he said about loving his job since she was pretty sick and tired of what she was doing. The fact that she reminded herself of her birth mother made it that much worse for her. Her eyes grew wide when she heard the name of the company he founded, one because it was a big name in this town, or at least it seemed so to her. And second, because it felt like that name, Titan Tech, had been following her around for a while. She couldnât deny the sign when she saw it. âWell if thereâs ever any chance to be a contractor or something, maybe you can give that a shot. So that way, you donât have to leave but you can also go ahead and explore that interest. You know, have your cake and eat it too type.â As unrealistic as it may have appeared to her, she wouldnât write it off because she had unwittingly found herself conversing with a co-founder of a company who was offering her a job. And under any other circumstance she would have said she needed time to think about it, felt weird taking a favor of this level from someone. As though she was cheating the system. But what were the odds of something like this happening? âWow. Thank you,â she said taking the card. âI...Iâll definitely stop by.â It was maybe foolish, but rather than expressing just how much she would love to work at Titan, Sara just hoped that Carly would be able to get her that interview before Rohan was able to mention her name to Aaron. Both for the experience of a technical interview but also for her own confidence that she could get a job herself. Maybe she really put too much faith in meritocracy and that made her naive, but that faith was what kept her from immediately telling the man before her how desperately she actually wanted to be out of here. âI feel like I should offer you a free bagel or danish.â She began to look around before looking up. âOh but not as like a bribe or something. Thatâs not what this is. If you donât want a danish thatâs fine. Just as like a thank you for even considering me type thing?â Was she speaking too much? âWould you like a danish, valued customer?âÂ
