I thought this book was charming. It had a unique premise which I really appreciated. In a world where ghosts of all kinds can roam freely once night falls it is up to kids and teens to make the places they haunt safe. Because I like to read into everything, you could say that these books mirror our own world where it is up to a younger generation to see the problems that adults can't see and solve them to make our collective world just a little better. And even though these kids fight something that is classically "scary" it is often something very real and alive that is the real monster. ...

Mad Forest: A Play from Romania by Caryl Churchill

This play was different from most Caryl Churchill plays I've read because the action does not take place in England. I thought this departure did not detract from Churchill's unique writing style and story telling ability. Using her characteristic scene structure and overlapping dialogue, she was able to create a snapshot of the Romanian Revolution through the eyes of two families and individual stories. The Young and Beautiful by Sally Benson
So I picked up this play because it was based on the F. Scott Fitzgerald short story from The Saturday Evening Post called “Josephine”. I’d like to think that whoever wrote “Young and Beautiful” for the Great Gatsby movie did their research and this influenced the song title.
This book is standard F. Scott (I hope that doesn’t sound pretentious, I like to imagine we’re buddies). A beautiful young girl has many admirers, her parents think she’s an angel, and she’s wise beyond her years/sadly disillusioned by love and the world. However, despite these tropes, Sally Benson, seamlessly blended these Fitzgeraldian techniques with humor and heart. Together, these things made the play read more like a Gossip Girl episode set in 1915.
I think if this play was acted with a blend of melodrama and humor, the audience could end up laughing at and with the characters, but not becoming annoyed with them. I know I found them ridiculous until I stared reading it from this perspective. If you accept that the premise is of a certain style and the characters are of a certain mindset, then the play becomes enjoyable. I would love to realize this play and the characters on stage.

There is also a mention of Anna's hands and how they look elegant with all of the rings she wears. However, I'm 300 pages in and, for the life of me, can't find that quote anywhere.

In a shocking turn of events my mom and I both wore brown based outfits (we almost always wear anything that goes with black this is a Big Deal). Anyway. Obviously I documented it.

My mom is wearing my favorite pair of pants that she owns, and a scarf that, when I asked her where she got it she said, “I have so many scarves now I don’t know where any of them came from.” She’s great.
