Ignore my new display name Iām going through something
I think the worst thing about the izzcourse was a subset of pro-ed/anti-izzy people insisting that irl queer actor Con was homophobic because he portrayed a character they didn't like.
This is making me laugh out loud because isnāt he married to a man š
I think most people seem to see Maryās confidence in standing up to Stede as her just being an awesome girlboss which love that for her but I really really REALLY also like thinking of her having the flavour of autism where you are incredibly blunt all the time⦠I think I just enjoy projecting autism onto my favs but socially struggling Mary who canāt not speak her mind even when not fully appropriate is so real to me
jilted wives
I think Iām gonna become a Mary Bonnet yumeshipper. Thatās wifey right there.

This is so edizzy coded to me actually
Fang/Ivan/Izzy is lowkey one of my fave pre-canon ships
I feel youā¦I have headcannons about Ivan that could make this so interesting actuallyā¦not ready to share them because theyāre incomplete but
noticed Fang helping Izzy down the stairs in this cut sceneā¦Iām gonna be SICK!!!!!
Hey, itās ādifferent anon.ā Not sure if youāre still up. I got to looking at my message on your blog, and even though I didnāt mean to be, I was biased in my message and I feel like I did the gentlebeard fandom at large sort of a disservice. A lot of the stuff I listed was from a few loud individuals and not the majority. I also worry that I aired a lot of grievances, and I donāt want you to get flack for it. You donāt need to get pulled into discourse nonsense. Please feel free to delete that anon I sent earlier if youāre worried about peopleās responses, okay? It wonāt hurt my feelings. I feel bad that I hit you with all that. š
Itās ok annon!! Dw about it really
The best advice I can give you as someone who joined this fandom weeks after the first finale dropped and saw it all hit the fan is to remember that when people talk about the Canyon/Izzy antis/Izzy stans/Gentlebeardies, itās actually, like, such a small group of people actually saying the stuff that the majority of the fandom is being accused of saying or believing. We donāt all hold the same extreme this-or-that polar opposite opinion. So donāt be afraid that thereās hundreds of people out there who are waiting to attack you for being wrong. Just, you know, be prepared to moderate your experience.
Ok thanks annon this actually made me feel. A bit less intimidatedā¦. I rlly like the show and the characters but Iāve been sooo scared to really try get into the fandom..
Different anon. The homophobia thing really has made a bit of a mess. The problem I saw over the years that Iāve been here as a fan of all the characters is that at first we all agreed he had some internalized issues, but while some of us saw it as interesting storytelling and a chance for growth in the upcoming second season (that hadnāt been released when this all started, keep that in mind), others touted it as part of a larger list of terrible, unforgivable traits that should make us all hate him. That we should love to hate him. That heās meant to be hated and defeated as the ultimate irredeemable villain and symbol of toxic masculinity and heteronormativity. The few who shouted loudest about it also painted his every action towards others as racist (because the cast is diverse so almost every character he interacted with was non-white even if he was equally biting toward everyone), said that he had obviously been abusing Ed and the whole Queen Anne crew for years and had power over Ed as another ācishet angry white man like his father,ā that he was ātrying to enslave Ed when the navy handed him over,ā that his character probably isnāt even meant to be queer so the homophobia isnāt internalized (including accusing the actor of not being queer after coming out), and that anyone who liked him should take a look in the mirror because they might be queerphobic or racist or abuse apologists for liking him. This came in replies, callout posts, vague blogs, and vicious anons. All of this led to a lot of fans leaving this space entirely while some Izzy fans instead retaliated by trying to refute these claimsāall of them, including the toxic masculinity. Which only frustrated the people they were arguing with. The back-and-forth escalated over the years and really twisted things up so of course itās all convoluted and seems ridiculous now to anyone just coming into it.
As someone who watched it all happen, Iām very tired. š
Just. Donāt really know what to say to this š good LORD
