For the better part of a year, we've watched — and reported — in horror as more and more stories emerge about AI chatbots leading people to self-harm, delusions, hospitalization, arrest, and suicide.

As the loved ones of the people impacted by these dangerous bots rally for change to prevent such harm from happening to anyone else, the companies that run these AIs have been slow to implement safeguards — and OpenAI, whose ChatGPT has been repeatedly implicated in what experts are now calling "AI psychosis," has until recently done little more than offer copy-pasted promises.

In a new blog post admitting certain failures amid its users' mental health crises, OpenAI also quietly disclosed that it's now scanning users' messages for certain types of harmful content, escalating particularly worrying content to human staff for review — and, in some cases, reporting it to the cops.

"When we detect users who are planning to harm others, we route their conversations to specialized pipelines where they are reviewed by a small team trained on our usage policies and who are authorized to take action, including banning accounts," the blog post notes. "If human reviewers determine that a case involves an imminent threat of serious physical harm to others, we may refer it to law enforcement."

That short and vague statement leaves a lot to be desired — and OpenAI's usage policies, referenced as the basis on which the human review team operates, don't provide much more clarity.

Yes, this is OpenAI's response to the several suicides, and now a murder-suicide, that have resulted from using their product.

Instead of admitting ChatGPT is not a therapist and trying to stop people from using it as one, they are notifying the cops. Their chatbot will continue to support delusions and encourage dangerous thought patterns in the people desperate enough to turn to it for help, only now your "therapy sessions" will be reviewed by random staff and the cops.

Not just your therapy sessions either - people trying to jailbreak AI as funny pranks - like getting Grok to provide instructions on how to kill Elon Musk - might end up having to explain their jokes to the cops. I've heard enough horror stories from professional comedians that had to explain jokes to the cops, if you're an online troll it's gonna be a real nightmare.

My blood sugar went low in the middle of the night, and so my dad came in and suspended my insulin pump. Not only did he have to wake me up to tell him how because he literally didn't know, but it was unnecessary, because there was no insulin that was going to be delivered. Anyway, then I wake up, and my blood sugar is over 400, I have high ketones, and I have a headache and bad nausea as a result. Basically, I feel like shit. It's because apparently my dad didn't know that you need to resume insulin after pausing it, so I hadn't had any insulin in about eight hours. This is Bad™️. When I went downstairs to start trying to get my ketones down, does my father apologize? No, he promptly begins teasing me about being in a hoodie in summer and for looking sick and pissed-off.

This is one example but I think it shows that a lot of people, especially loved ones, tend to take over a person's care without knowing what they're doing. Love does not entitle you to using someone's medical devices to mess with their medications - even if you're trying to help and be nice by not waking me, you cannot change my medication without talking to the person who's taken care of it for six years, especially when you don't even remember the name of my devices or medications. Love does not entitle you to do things with my disability that can legitimately have consequences, at the very least making me sick for several hours and at most sending me to the ER. And you do not get to tease me when I experience severe symptoms, whether collapsing due to a loss of limb control and neurological symptoms or getting sick because of your actions.

Love me without messing with my medications in an attempt to help. You’re going to make it worse. Just don't.

Hate to admit it but I'm posting less reviews because they keep getting censor**d.

Even the reviews with no sensual implications are starting to get flagged. For what? For blood? For guns? What's next under the ban hammer? Video games? Archery? If a cartoon picture of a bazooka gets you censored it's not about safety. Within the next few years the internet is going to try to hide all "adult" content behind more subscription services.
