I love this because of the realistic languages hiccup it shows. Language is a significant barrier between any two cultures, and while the practical words can be figured out with some hard work and determination (you can hold up a cup and say ‘cup’ and get the message across, which is a start), idioms, expressions, and turns of phrase, all of these are a lot more difficult to convey across that barrier.

The fact that there were aliens stumbling over them in ME1 (plus I’m pretty sure you can overhear a salarian in the Noveria bar use an idiom based around salarian culture) make ME1’s depiction of the universe stand out as more real. By 2 and 3, all the language gets very human-centric, and it’s disappointing, given how much depth doing that gave the universe in 1.
