The tears fell down her cheeks in quiet streams, dropping onto her pants and dampening then wherever they landed.
Calling home always ended this way. Her crying alone. Quietly. Sitting with the words. Their disappointment. And wondering why she even bothers to do anything.
Maybe they’re right. Maybe I should quit. They’ll find a new Hunter to replace me. Someone stronger. Someone smarter. Someone who doesn’t weigh them down.
Her vision was blurred as she stared at her phone, the screen pitch black.
She didn’t even hear the elevator chime, she didn’t hear the footsteps, and she didn’t notice anyone approaching her until she felt a hand on her shoulder and she jolted up, her hands moving instinctively to summon her Shin-Kal but when she saw the familiar face, she hesitated and put her hands down
Great reflexes Zoey. You almost stabbed Bobby
“Hey, I came to restock the fridge…figured you girls would be asleep by now” He spoke, he was indeed carrying a few grocery bags, all filled with the girls favorite things to eat and drink.
“Huh? Yeah- yeah I’m ok just had to pee that’s all” She laughed, waving her hand “uh- let me help with that” she said as she reached for and took a bag from him, going to the fridge to start putting things away.
Anything to avoid telling Bobby the truth.
She could feel his eyes on her as she moved but she didn’t slow, she continued to pack things away until she heard his rest the bags on the kitchen island.
“Are you girls excited for the tour?”
“Oh! Yeah yeah Mira has been working on the choreography for days, my legs hurt” she laughed
“I can imagine, I hope you girls are taking breaks, we don’t want what happened to Rumi to start spreading” Bobby said lightheartedly.
Zoey swallowed and laughed “Yeah, wouldn’t want that haha”
They fell into easy conversation, it’s easy to talk to Bobby, he just listens, he supports, he’s a little weird like her, but that’s what makes him the best.
Soon the groceries were put away and Zoey went back to the table to pick up her phone, she could just continue her sulking in her room after Bobby left. As she lifted it up the screen woke, bathing her face in light and making her squint as she saw the notification from her Mother.
Her face darkened at the message and her shoulders dropped, staring at it and feeling that ache in her chest tug hard, like yanking at a thread.
“Have I told you how proud I am of you Zoey”
“I’m proud of you, I’m proud of all of you girls, you’ve all overcome so much both apart and together, and seeing you grow has shown me how extraordinary you all are…”
She turned her head to look at him and he was standing beside her
“And I just want you to know, that no matter what anyone will tell you…” his eyes never left hers “I’ll always be proud, and I’ll always care about you”
She could feel that familiar burn behind her eyes, that warning that the tears were imminent and if she didn’t leave now. He’d see.
But he already saw, didn’t he.
He saw the text in her phone before she did.
She sniffled and felt her hands begun to tremble.
The tears creeping out and prickling at the corners of her eyes.
“Bobby…” her voice came out small.
He pulled her into a hug and she couldn’t have melted faster even if she tried, her head falling onto his shoulder as she wrapped her arms around him and cried, Bobby rubbing the back of her head in a soothing gesture, guiding them both to sit on the floor as he comforted her.
