Once a talented albeit unscrupulous psychiatrist, Harleen Quinzel came to work at Arham Asylum for her postdoctoral internship. Therein she met The Joker and in her youthful ambition believed that she could successfully treat the so-called clown prince of crime. At first it seemed as though Dr. Quinzel was making excellent progress with The Joker; yet it turned out that the calculating villain was slowly and successfully indoctrinating the young Haleen into his own twisted outlook on the world. Before she knew it Dr. Quinzel was hopelessly entranced by the villain.
Fashioning herself a harlequin outfits and a variety of thematic weapons, Quinzel broke The Joker out of Arkham and began a colorful career as Harley Quinn, the Joker’s mole and girlfriend. As time past, Harley cultivate a close, loving relationship with her fellow villainess, Poison Ivy. Ivy was able to help Harley break free from the abusive, dependent relationship she had with The Joker.
Liberated from The Joker’s sway, Harley continued on as an independent operator, fighting sometimes against but mostly alongside a variety of heroes. As part of a plea deal to avoid prison time for her past criminal deeds, Harley has agreed to act as a member of Task Force X and has embarked numerous missions with The Suicide Squad. She would additionally act as a member of the Gotham Sirens, the Birds of Prey and even the Justice League.
Following a long courtship filled with all manner of hi jinks, Harley finally married her true love when she and Poison Ivy tied the knot in the pages of Injustice: Year Zero. Mazel tov!
Actresses Margot Robbie, along with Mia Sara, Cassidy Alexa, Meggie Vilcina and Lady Gaga have portrayed live-action versions of Harley. The character has featured in many animated projects, originally voiced by the great Arleen Sorkin. Subsequent actresses who have voiced Harley in animated projects include Tara Strong, Kaley Cuoco, Kang Ji-young, Hynden Walch, Meghan Strang, Melissa Rauch, Chandni Parekh, Jaimie Chung, Anna Nagase, Sirena Irwin, Karlii Hoch, Rie Kugimiya, Kang Ji-young and Gillian Jacobs.
Harley Quinn first appeared in the episode ‘Joker’s Favor’ from Batman The Animated Series. Her first comic book appearance was in The Batman Adventures #12 (1993); and her first main continuity appearance was in the pages of Batman: Harley Quinn #1 (1999).
