okay so question time! i was under the impression that the earrings worn by bajoran’s are like a religious garment of sorts. in the season one finale of voyager, tuvok makes gerron remove his earring as it isn’t dress code regulation.
but if it’s a religious thing, wouldn’t it be allowed? i thought the issues was kinda cover in TNG with ensign ro and riker.
it was just a small detail i noticed on my rewatch and i just wanna know if anyone else is thinking about it
This particular Starfleet regulation applies to all cultures not just Bajor that is the thing. The uniform we see is the standard Starfleet uniform such things like the Klingon baldric, Bajoran earring, Vulcan IDIC, human crucifix/star of David/etc, Andorian baldric, Tamarian baldric .... This list could go on honestly are all cultural symbols religious or otherwise that are essentially command approved and/or overall approved by Starfleet.
Tuvok is essentially doing a basic training in that episode of Voyager which means that it's going to be very basic no approval at first. With Voyager the issue primarily comes after this episode where .... We don't really see the Bajorans on the ship all that much after utilizing their earrings. Which leaves the implication that approval either never comes or none of the Bajorans desire to wear their earrings - both of which isn't all that comfortable to sit with. We also never really see Tuvok wearing the IDIC in uniform as we saw with Spock for example (I believe T'Pol did a few times as well). This is one of the few things that Voyager doesn't do very well and much of that is due to the show trying to enforce the whole "one crew under Starfleet thing" - likely trapped itself into a singular image for the crew without meaning too.
Also, the earrings for Bajorans are also a means to identify the family they come from and once identified the caste they are a part of. And should they get engaged as they be going into a new family and the females be changing their last name the males often would give the female a new earring as an engagement gift.
But yeah, basically these things get approved by command within Starfleet. Enterprise approved it for members of their crew. Ro in TNG had come prison to the Enterprise and wasn't trusted by Riker - thus not being allowed at first - and when asked to stay on the ship by Picard she blatantly said she only would under the condition she could wear her earring. Picard made the approval, not Riker. Riker still did not trust for many episodes after this. Picard made the command decision to allow her to wear it. But that didn't mean other ships had to do this or even any other station.
As well, we see that Bajorans at Starfleet Academy DURING TNG are wearing the earring so it is likely that the Academy has a certain process individuals go through for approval for this particular regulation. Then once sent out to the fleet, the same process is simply followed at their commands. And most likely 99% give approval with individuals like Jellico being the 1% who deny. I stated my suspicions for Voyager but I do like to think the approval is given and we just manage not to catch them after that episode for whatever bizarre reason. B'Elanna hasn't excepted that side of herself entirely just yet for example so obviously not gonna wear Klingon stuff.
really vibe with how “ex post facto” is set up to be a tom paris centered episode but quickly reveals itself to be an episode about how much tuvok loves playing detective
It was definitely a Tuvok episode. He was the hard-boiled detective who solved the case. Tom was the long-legged beauty who walked into his office needing his help.

getting into social work in this day and age is what i assume getting really into science was like when people still believed the earth was the center of the solar system
Tuvok is such a girl dad

My most toxic trait is fully believing that I could get a Vulcan to like me
