hi hi hello so about that “spamton neo is fucking pinioned” essay!!
bear with me while i try to put my thoughts in order, please, i am not very good at that </3
(cw for vague mention of amputation & animal cruelty below the cut)
so. so so so. first of all, the NEO itself!! yes its just the same wing design as mettaton neo undertale but thats a whole other can of worms i cannot get into right now. we are talking about deltarune neo body now ok?
SO neo being pinioned is, on its own, something that makes a lot of thematic sense. its got all these hopes and dreams packed into it & its exactly how mettaton wanted it to look but. but it could never fulfill the purpose it was designed for. mettaton cant use a body thats in the dark world. a bird, a thing designed almost entirely around flight at a very basic level, cannot fly if pinioned. designed for a single purpose that it cannot achieve.
AND SPAMTON. THE PARALLELS WITH HIS STORYLINE. OUGH
the neo was designed as mettaton’s idea body. birds are designed after the ideal of flight. addisons are designed to advertise. pinioning is generally done to very young birds, before their wing bones harden. aka well before fledging. spamton isn’t a baby when he makes a deal with whoever was on the other end of the phone, but he hasn’t “fledged” yet. hasnt learned how to succeed on his own.
and he never does!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
he succeeds but not on his own terms, only bc someone is helping him!!! & when that person goes away, he can’t do it on his own. he’s still restricted by the terms of the deal somehow. if you abandon a pinioned bird, its wing doesnt grow back. its just flightless and abandoned now. its ability to properly care for itself and even its ability to move has been taken from it and it no longer has even the benefit of being cared for as a counterweight to that.
and even when he had NEO. even with NEO. hes so so close to [HEAVEN] so so close to flying but he can’t!!!! the endeavor was doomed from the start. even if you find the perfect branch to take off from even if you can climb all the way up to it even if your whole body is designed for it you cannot fly pinioned. something vital and irreplaceable has been taken away and theres no way to fix it
its not inherently a death sentence, but a pinioned bird will never fly.
AND I JUST. OUGHHH THE SYMBOLISMMMMMMMMM
just. birds being symbolic of freedom and a bird with clipped wings being symbolic of a loss of freedom (and pinioning is worse than wing clipping!! clipped wings r reversible & pinioning is not!!!) and spamton’s whole story being themed around the loss of freedom & the desperate desperate desire to get it back and i
hey. hey so theres almost no way this detail is intentional, but my bird-fixated ass just noticed something about Spamton NEO’s design.
his left wing (possibly the right one too, theres not a good view of it) very very much looks like a wing that has been pinioned.
which is both oddly thematically appropriate and a very bad thing to do to anything with wings- it involves deliberately severing a bird’s wing at or just above the wrist, usually done to birds who haven’t fledged yet, often without painkillers, in order to prevent flight.
this is 100% just a symptom of me knowing way too much about birds, but i genuinely can’t not see it anymore. ...and as i said before, it feels oddly appropriate, thematically.
after all, how can a pinioned angel ever reach [[HEAVEN]]?
