movie night at the house
Finally broke the seal on teaching myself AutoHotKey a few weeks back... In order to--you guessed it--more efficiently type accented characters regardless of what word processor I'm working with.
My old copy of word 2010 still has all my precious little short-cuts and customized libraries that I started back in highschool built in and functioning... But poor Office Libre does not. It has a "special symbol" library and so far no way to bind symbols to key combos... And I haven't found anything in the community that meets my needs just yet. To say nothing of the Wordpress and Squarespace "writing blocks" I use on the regular for web work.
My precious accent-aigu. Mon ami, accent-grave. They can't keep us apart. Not forever.
It irks me ever so slightly that I cannot to my knowledge treat the various accents as "radicals" or like hand-written accents—*just things that can be placed on any applicable character by means of a gesture--or a modifier key combo. My hand-writing brain says, "Why can't [key combo] simply mean this accent, applied to this next character?"
Instead, each accented letter must be written into the script as an individual "symbol" or character. On reflection, it makes perfect sense. "É," and "é," have the same sound in both the languages I'm familiar with, but hold different meaning. Majuscule and miniscule play different roles in written language, and so they have to be coded separately. Because, again, this is for my own reference, they mean different things. "M," and "m," likewise are the same letter with the same sound and different symbols.
So, I've got a functional little AutoHotKey tool that lets me type "É," and "é." But I've already run into an issue in trying to expand the tool.
Until I get back into it and start problem solving, my brain is telling me that the solution is simple, actually: More Modifier Keys.
*Caught myself getting annoyed at the lack of natural em-dash in this specific writing block and copy-pasting one in from an open Office Libre doc. Waste of energy! You probably know what double-dashes mean from me. Or, more importantly, I know.

Editing book reviews from 2011 and I find they've consistently misspelled the author's name (François) as "Francois." Yes, I will go in and correct every single "Fran-quoi" before I send this out. Today, I can choose to be exactly the pedant I want to see in the world.

you can click once every 24 hrs to benefit UN aid organizations in Palestine. Arab.org keeps track of these benefits and publishes transparency reports every quarter at their website here. the above link goes directly to benefit Palestine, but you can also click more benefit programs from their frontpage at Arab.org.
a lot of us on tumblr are desperate to help Gaza but have absolutely nothing to offer except our attention and our worry. we don't have money to send, we don't have the ear of the public, we don't have any influence at all. this site appears to be (i say "appears to be" because ive been on the internet and just generally alive too long to ever think anything is a sure bet) a way to summon a small amount of money out of thin air and send it where it needs to go, with zero effort besides moving your mouse or your finger. i think we can all handle that much, no matter how helpless we are otherwise.
i don't like or trust NGOs as a rule, however, UNRWA, the organization aided by clicking the green link above, is despised by Israel and has been defunded by Trump twice, which in my opinion is one of the strongest indicators it is probably actually performing some useful function in Gaza.
consider setting Arab.org as your homepage in your desktop and mobile browsers to help you remember to click, and consider setting up scheduled reblogs or making your own posts with reminders.

Hey, if anyone’s curious, this IS making a serious impact — this handbook was taught as standard practice for my EMT license course, as well as several other programs. A lot of new providers are being taught this as a matter of course.
Babel, An Arcane History by R.F. Kuang
The front cover of the book features the English title of the book foiled in gold. Around it are Bible verses written in Cantonese Chinese (Genesis 11:8-9) foiled in silver.
The back of the book is like a mirror of the front except that it has the Cantonese title of the book foiled in gold, and around it is the English translation of the same bible verses.
“So the LORD scattered them abroad from thence upon the face of all the earth: and they left off to build the city. Therefore is the name of it called Babel; because the LORD did there confound the language of all the earth: and from thence did the LORD scatter them abroad upon the face of all the earth.”

The short version; Griffin, the primary income for the household, lost his job … Lindsay Bolin needs your support for Help Griffin and Linds
Ah boy, lads, it's that classic "I hate to do this, but" moment for me and my roommate. I explain a lot in the post, but to summarize, we're in a position where we might lose our apartment soon. My roommate lost his job some months ago and we're officially out of backup money, and as a disabled woman on a fixed income I can't cover the difference, so we're swallowing our pride a bit to ask for help.
If you can't donate- which is totally understandable- even just reblogging this/sharing would be super helpful- we're grateful either way.
Thank you for your consideration!
